Welcome to Opera magazine's new - look mobile - friendly monthly newsletter!
Issue 62 January 2016
 Dear opera-lover

Welcome to our January issue.

Shortly after we went to press, the sad news came of the death of our dear friend and former editor, Rodney Milnes. Tributes will follow in the February issue.

As rumours gather of drastic cuts at English National Opera, the Editor expresses his profound concerns for the future of the company and the crucial role played by the chorus and orchestra in making it exactly that - a company.

Russ McDonald celebrates Shakespeare 400 and the playwright's fertile operatic afterlife.

WNO performs Elena Langer's new opera, Figaro Gets a Divorce  (February to April), conducted by Justin Brown, who is the subject of this month's profile.

Maria Callas's astonishing versatility and chameleon-like qualities are celebrated by Stephen Hastings.

New productions reviewed include The Haunted Manor in Warsaw; The Force of Destiny at ENO; Morgen und Abend at the Royal Opera; Koanga, Le Pré aux clercs and Guglielmo Ratcliff at Wexford; Wozzeck in Chicago, Götterdämmerung in Beijing, Moses und Aron in Paris and Lulu at the Met.

Our disc of the month is Partenope, with Il Pomo d'Oro and a cast including Karina Gauvin, Ermöke Baráth, Philippe Jaroussky and John Mark Ainsley, conducted by Riccardo Minasi.
