Sand Lake Community Patrol!
|
|
Some very exciting news was highlighted in the
Anchorage Daily News
this week about the recently established Sand Lake Community Patrol. This is a great group of neighbors that have come together to increase safety on our streets, and I can't wait to join the patrol when I get back home after we get our work done here in Juneau. Congrats to everyone involved on making this happening!
I had the chance to meet with some of the new patrol members this past weekend, and want to give a big thank you to all the volunteers and stakeholders for their hard work in keeping our neighbors safe!
If you have questions or ideas about community patrol efforts in our district and how you can help, feel free to give me a call (907-269-0234), email (

November 2017 Community Safety Meeting with Officer Nave of APD and Glenn Yancha of the Bayshore/Klatt Community Patrol on taking proactive steps to increase safety in our neighborhoods.

Yesterday, the House passed out a budget that prioritized education, public safety, and included a $1600 PFD. Essentially, this year's budget is a very similar to last year's, as it adjusts for inflation and restores critical public services. It includes a $19 million restoration to the University system and $942 million to inflation-proof the Permanent Fund. With amendment changes on the House Floor, all general funds in the House’s operating budget equal $5.35 billion. General funds increased by $170.8 million from the FY18 budget due to increases for Medicaid, the University, and public safety.
Since FY15, the State has cut 26% from the Unrestricted General Fund portion of the budget -- in real dollars.Though I would have liked to see a smaller budget again this year (I voted over 40 times to cut the budget), the FY19 budget that passed the House maintains the overall quality of public services for Alaskans, and took serious steps to increase public safety in our communities.

|
It's important to highlight that the FY19 budget will be funded by a draw from the Permanent Fund Earning Reserves Account (ERA). The PFD amount needs to be fiscally sustainable and responsible. It's essential that the first draw in history from the ERA is structured, sustainable, and protects the future of the dividend program. This is why I voted to support a $1600 PFD. It's $500 higher than last year’s PFD, $600 higher than the Senate’s proposed $1000, and doesn't jeopardize the Fund's future value.
We still have lots of work to do in Juneau. As we inch towards Day 90, there are other critical pieces of legislation that are moving alongside the budget. With all this happening, it can be hard to keep up with the bills you care most about. If you have a question about a bill, or where it is in the process, don't hesitate to reach out!

While back home last Saturday, I had the opportunity to spend time with neighbors at the Jewel Lake Kaladi, then headed over to Dimond High where to hear from the educators who live and work in the district. Thank you to all who came by!
For me, these conversations are what this job is all about. At Kaladi, I heard your questions on the budget, cuts I voted for, the Permanent Fund Dividend, and efforts underway to make our community a safer place to live. I was amazed by the turnout, and as always, it was great to see everyone and hear directly from neighbors. If you missed this coffee event, please make sure to reach out and pass along your concerns, ideas, or questions!

After coffee, I also had the opportunity to hear directly from teachers who work and live in the neighborhood to talk about trends they're seeing in the classroom. Public education is a priority - not just for me, but to our neighbors, and for the future of our state. Having face-to-face conversations with those on the front lines of our education system is critical to understanding the issues we still need to address, and what we're doing right. Our children are this State's greatest resource, and it's critical their educational resources set them up for success. I commend both our experienced educators and those new to the field for their hard work, energy, and commitment to growing the young minds of our future leaders.

Our neighborhood knows resilience. When we see a problem, we have people that step up in our classrooms, our communities, and our homes. This is what I love about our side of town, and I'm honored to have heard from and connected with so many of you.
I always have time for my neighbors. If you have questions, concerns, or ideas, please give me a call at (907) 269-0234, send me an email at
