Enforcement Operation Designed to Reduce Violent Crime

Contact: Lieutenant John Whitney - 707-651-7105

--Vallejo, CA-- On January 2, 2014, the Vallejo Police Department began a new directed-patrol/crime-reduction and crime-deterrent program dubbed:

Operation Safe Net

The goal of the program is to reduce the current surge of violent crime and criminal activity in the City of Vallejo. The police department also hopes to reduce the fear of crime in Vallejo.  With the goal of providing a visible presence in the community, officers assigned to this detail will be in uniform and will be driving fully marked police vehicles.

Officers will be working different schedules and days to prevent criminals from knowing when the operation will be taking place.  Shifts will also vary in length.  Because of critical staffing issues, this operation has been developed as an overtime detail whereby officers can sign up to work Operation Safe Net before or after their regular shifts and/or on their regular days off.

Chief Joseph Kreins stated, "Although our department continues to struggle with staffing resources, we recognize that there has been an increase in both property and violent crimes in Vallejo and we believe that it is necessary to take whatever steps we have within our means to address public safety issues in our community.  Our citizens have a right to be safe and a right to feel safe and we will continue our focus on efforts to reduce violent crimes."

The public is encouraged to report crime hot spots throughout the city by emailing the Operation Safe Net Commander at SafeNet@ci.vallejo.ca.us.

Operation Safe Net commenced on January 2, 2014.  Officers were very successful on the first day of the operation.  In an 18 hour period, the ten (10) officers assigned to the operation arrested 32 suspects and issued 99 citations.  Also on the first day of the operation, the Vallejo Police Department received only one robbery call and one burglary call.

The burglary call occurred at Hogan Junior High School and Operation Safe Net officers arrived quickly and assisted the patrol division in arresting all 12 of the burglary suspects. Officers were able to return stolen property to the school.

The Vallejo Police Department will also partner with the Solano County Sheriff's Department in this endeavor.  The Sheriff's Department will periodically assign its Sheriff's Enforcement Team (SET) to Vallejo to assist with Operation Safe Net. We have also requested the assistance of the California Highway Patrol to provide high visibility traffic enforcement stops in Vallejo as their time and resources permit.

Operation Safe Net will continue with a targeted joint operation between the Vallejo Police Department and the Solano County Sheriff's Department (Special Enforcement Team) on Tuesday, January 7, 2014.

The Vallejo Police Department remains committed to reducing violent crimes, property crimes and all levels of criminal activity in the City of Vallejo.
