Grantee Highlight: Ozark Literacy Council

Program: Financial Literacy Program for Women
Area of Effect: Washington/Benton Counties
Grant Amount: $2,500
Grant Status: In process; estimated completion date 7/12
No. Participants: 225 (more than expected)
OLC's financial literacy program for their women ESL students enables them to acquire language skills to secure a job, allows them to become knowledgeable participants in their own financial situation, and develops financial independence.
"My name is Lorena, and I come from Chile. I want to study more about nutrition at the University of Arkansas. But first, I must pass the TOEFL. The test is very hard and sometimes people are hard to understand. It is also hard to write in English, but I know I must practice every day.
The Ozark Literacy Council has really helped me to improve my English writing and speaking abilities. I began taking classes at OLC a few months ago. Everyone was really nice and helpful, and I learned a lot. Now that my English is improved, I am taking classes at NWACC and at OLC. Soon, I will be a student confidently speaking at the University of Arkansas in the Nutrition program. I am so grateful to OLC and my teachers for helping me reach this goal!
OLC students are exposed to a Financial/Business curriculum and are encouraged to make a documented goal of attaining/retaining employment. In 2011, 100% of the students who made this goal attained it, so they and their families are contributing to the economic vitality of our community.

Volunteer Highlight: Phyllis Brown
Phyllis Brown, chair of WFA's 2012 POWER OF THE PURSE-Little Rock Committee, has recently retired as CEO of Arkansas Cardiology, PA so that she can travel more, do mission trips and volunteer work.
We asked Phyllis why she thinks it is important to support women & girls?
"In my role as CEO of Arkansas Cardiology, I found that women make most of the family decisions regarding healthcare, food, and often finances and education. Through empowerment and education these ladies will make more informed decisions and choices which will not only impact their own lives and the lives of their families but often can influence communities."
Learn more about POWER OF THE PURSE (LR-Oct 26; NWA-Oct 5) on our website and more about why Phyllis chooses to support WFA on our FACEBOOK page.

 Brownie Ledbetter Civic Engagement Award
This award honors the life and work of one of WFA's Founders: Mary Brown (Brownie) Williams Ledbetter.
The BROWNIE LEDBETTER CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AWARD is not awarded annually, but when that special woman distinguishes herself above all others within the state through her exemplary participation in the building and strengthening of her community.
Brownie's is not an easy example to follow, but WFA will be proud to recognize those women who display her values and dedication in their approach to community building. FOLLOW THIS LINK to learn more about the criteria or download the nomination form.

Conversations: The Power of Women's Voices
Deb Peterson wrote about WFA's first screening of the documentary MISS REPRESENTATION in the June/July 2012 issue of MARVELOUS! MAGAZINE - a new bimonthly magazine for women who create the life they want and live it passionately.
"We cannot be complacent or complicit," says Lynnette. "This is timely. The topic of women has been bubbling up in the news. We are part of every discussion. Our voices matter." FULL ARTICLE
WFA has two more free screenings of Miss Representation coming up: First Federal Bank is sponsoring a screening at ASU-Mountain Home on THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 13. Another screening is in the works for NWA this summer - watch your email & our WEBSITE for more information about additional screenings across Arkansas!
