2016 ORCAS ARTISTS' STUDIO TOUR 
(Friday, August 19 - Sunday, August 21, 11:00 am - 5:00 pm)
Twenty-nine artists are opening up their studios for the 2016 Open Artists' Studio Tour to share their passion and talent.  Experience demonstrations and indulge in your creative side. Pick up the free brochures with the included map at the Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce. This is a free 3-day event.

OPEN MIC NIGHT @ THE DOE BAY CAFÉ
(Thursday Evenings - Sponsoring Orcas Island Forest School in August)  
Join island visitors and residents to share music, spoken word, and other performances on the night when we come together in that ancient ritual of community and communion. The Café is open from 5:00-10:00 pm and Open Mic begins at 7:30 pm. Come out and support Orcas Island Forest School! Each Thursday in August, Doe Bay Open Mic Night gives a percentage of the sale from each entree sold to Orcas Island Forest School. Great food, music and a fantastic cause!

ORCAS ISLAND CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL 
(Now through August 20)
The Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival is in full swing, and, as always, the music is amazing! Tickets are still available, both reserved seats in the house and up-close-and-intimate stage seating. Special added matinee on Tuesday, August 16, at 2:30 pm - An Evening with Heifetz in the Afternoon, featuring Dr. Ayke Agus, Heifetz's student, accompanist, assistant, and confidante.

25TH ANNUAL WILDLIFE 100 TOUR OF THE SAN JUAN ISLANDS
(Sunday, August 21)
On Sunday, August 21, Wildlife Cycles hosts our 25th annual Wildlife 100 tour of the San Juan Islands. Your $10 donation goes to Orcas Island Recreational Program, which provides year-round activities for youth, teens, adults, and families.
The Tour will start at Wildlife Cycles at 6:00 am but anyone can meet up with the group at any point of the route. This is an unsupported ride. Click here to visit the website and to see the schedule and click here to download a PDF map of the tour.

SUNDAY'S HISTORICAL MATINEE FEATURES FRANK LOUDIN
(Sunday, August 21, 3:00 pm @ the Fire Hall)
The Orcas Island Historical Museum's next Historical Matinee will be this Sunday, August 21, at 3:00 pm at the Fire Hall.  It features well-known local artist Frank Loudin. Frank will talk about his art, including his much admired aviation art, some of which can be seen at the Pioneer Museum as part of the "Wings Over Orcas Island - An Aviation History" exhibit. Frank will bring some of his art to display at the History Matinee and will talk about what inspired him to start painting aviation pictures. ROSARIO MUSIC CONCERT AND HISTORICAL NARRATIVE
(Tuesdays - Saturdays at 4:00 pm at Rosario) 
Enjoy a presentation of music and photography that walks guests through the history of the Moran family and the Rosario estate with Christopher Peacock. Highlights of the presentation include the historic Moran Photograph Collection, Phantom of the Opera music performed on the Mansion's 1,972 pipe Aeolian organ with the silent film, stories of the Mansion's most colorful residents, and Christopher's original piano compositions played on the 1900 Steinway Grand Piano.

UPTOWN EASTSOUND PRESENTS EVENING ARTWALK  
(Thursday, August 25, 5:00 - 8:00 pm)
The artists, galleries, and businesses are now open for the Evening Artwalk!  Stroll the shops and galleries of Eastsound, 5:00 - 8:00 pm, and visit or support your local artists and businesses.  The Evening Artwalk will take place every 2nd and 4th Thursday until October. RISING APPALACHIA AT ORCAS CENTER
(Thursday, August 25, 7:30 pm)
Rising Appalachia brings to the stage a collection of sounds, stories, and songs steeped in tradition and a devotion to world culture on Thursday, August 25 at 7:30 pm on Center Stage, Orcas Center.  Listen to Sisters Leah Song and Chloe Smith's beautiful sound for banjo and fiddle duets and poetic harmonies like only sisters can do. Joined full time by their beloved band, Biko Casini on percussion, and David Brown on stand up bass and baritone guitar, expect everything from folk standards to jazz, to New Orleans soul, to old mountain traditional, to activist anthems, as their style redefines folk music as a truly living art. Using sound as a tool to spark cultural revolution and birth a new movement, come join them as they create soul sounds for us all.

CHILDREN'S SONGWRITER TIM NOAH BENEFIT CONCERT ON LABOR DAY WEEKEND
(Saturday, September 3, 2:00 pm @ the Emmanuel Episcopal Parish Hall)
Tim Noah will perform Saturday, September 3, in a benefit concert for Children's House, a preschool early learning center on Orcas. Noah is an Emmy award-winning children's songwriter and producer, nationally acclaimed recording artist and star of stage and screen. He has appeared on HBO, The Disney Channel, and the BBC.
Tickets: Advanced tickets can be purchased at Darvill's Bookstore, weekdays at Children's House (or by calling 360-376-4744) and online.
General Admission is $10. Seating is limited and advanced purchase is highly recommended.  If you cannot attend -- but wish to donate tickets for families who could not otherwise afford the concert -- please contact Susan Anderson at 360-376-4744 so as many children as possible can enjoy the event regardless of ability to pay! STEVE BRAUN MEMORIAL TRIATHLON
(Sunday, September 4)
Sponsored by the Friends of Moran
Join us Sunday, September 4, for an island-style triathlon sponsored by Friends of Moran. This is one of our key funding components for park projects, other than the gift shop at the summit of Mt. Jacqueline Kempfer announces a 20% sale on all paintings during the Orcas Island Artistsʼ Three Day Studio Tour. The public is invited to view Jackieʼs paintings of local Orcas Island scenery in the mediums of watercolor, gouache, oil and sumi ink. There will be daily demonstrations of her watercolor technique. Come and enjoy the atmosphere of an eclectic
studio filled with art and antiques. Sign the guest book to receive a raffle ticket for an original painting! The drawing will be on Sunday at 5:05 pm (The winner need not be present).

KIWANIS RUMMAGE SALE SCHOLARSHIP FUNDRAISER

Donation items may be dropped off at the hall on Friday from 9:00 am until the start of sale at 5:00 pm. We are accepting CDs, movies and music, intact board games and gently used children's toys. Also any items you think others might use, please, bring them by.

PAINTED PET PALS - A FUNDRAISER FOR ORCAS ANIMAL SHELTER 
(Sculptures around Eastsound businesses on Monday, August 29 - Thursday, September 15)

Keep your eye out for Painted Pet sculptures around Eastsound.  Local artists have poured their hearts and amazing talents into creating these stunning renditions of cats and dogs, all to benefit the Orcas Animal Shelter. Drop in to any of the businesses displaying a Painted Pet and pick up your map to find all the pets around Eastsound. Don't miss your opportunity to take one of these amazing works of art home! Each business displaying a Painted Pet will have a silent auction sheet available for you to place your bid for a chance to own your favorite Pet! The auction is open until September 15th.
Look for us at the Farmers' Market on Saturday, September 3, and enter the Pet Treasure Hunt with an opportunity to win a pot of treasure - $100!

NEW POSITION AT THE ORCAS ISLAND SENIOR CENTER 
The Orcas Island Senior Center Operations Committee is looking for a new Senior Center Administrator!   
This rewarding and challenging part time position is primarily responsible for documentation and reporting of the Hearts and Hands program and for assisting the Senior Center Manager in all aspects of the efficient operation of the facility creating a welcoming and nurturing environment for Orcas Island seniors.  This position reports to the Senior Center Manager and assists the Manager and the entire OISC Operations Committee in achieving their vision for a successful OISC.

Stand-Up Paddleboard Racing at West Beach Resort! Open to everyone. Normally Sundays and Fridays at 5:30 pm. $12 entry fee, winner receives a free night stay in a 2BR cottage (restrictions apply). BMX NIGHT AT CAMP ORKILA 
(Tuesdays, 6:30 - 8:00 pm @ Camp Orkila)
BMX Night on Tuesdays has begun. Open to all ages who can ride a bike! BMX bikes and helmets are provided. Long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and closed-toe shoes are required. Forms available for parent signature for 18 and under. This event will run every Tuesday (weather permitting) until mid-September.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY'S SPOOKY TALES

"We ain't afraid of no ghosts!"  You might be after you attend the Historical Society's Spooky Tales - Ghost Stories With an Orcas Spin. You will hear hair-raising stories, told by Master Storyteller, Antoinette Botsford.
Pioneer Museum: Wednesday nights at 8:00 pm.  Crow Valley School Museum: Friday nights at 5:00 pm . Tickets are $10 for adults, $5.00 for children under 13, and $25 for a family of four. The San Juan County Economic Development Council and the San Juan Island Community Foundation have partnered with Washington Nonprofits and the Washington Secretary of State to offer workshops on excellent board practices. Click here for more details.
This interactive, hands-on workshop will cover board responsibilities, operations, development, fundraising, and advocacy. It is based on the Boards in Gear resources developed in partnership with some of our state's leading board experts. Participants will leave with concrete action steps, tools, and connections.
The workshop is designed for board members and the people who work with them, namely executive directors and program staff.

PADDLE BOARD YOGA AT CASCADE LAKE

Is your yoga routine getting a little stale? If you're looking for a new challenge, yoga on a stand up paddle board will reinvigorate you and push you to become an even better yogi than you thought possible - all while enjoying the natural splendor of floating on water. Every Thursday evening in August, Orcas Adventures is offering Paddle Board Yoga with Christine Comito at Cascade Lake. FEATURING:  Anne Pedersen, longtime resident and one of the founders of THE GALLERY along with her daughter Janet, an exhibiting artist, author/illustrator and online teacher from Brooklyn, NY and daughter Lisa, a part time resident of Orcas and a skilled exhibiting artist with a gallery in Santa Barbara, CA.   All three have shown and sold their work on Orcas in the past few years.
