ROSARIO MUSIC CONCERT AND HISTORICAL NARRATIVE

Enjoy a presentation of music and photography that walks guests through the history of the Moran family and the Rosario estate with Christopher Peacock. Highlights of the presentation include the historic Moran Photograph Collection, Phantom of the Opera music performed on the Mansion's 1,972 pipe Aeolian organ with the silent film, stories of the Mansion's most colorful residents, and Christopher's original piano compositions played on the 1900 Steinway Grand Piano. Complimentary and open to the public.

MEN'S BREAKFAST AT COMMUNITY CHURCH
(Saturday, February 25, 8:30 - 10:30 am @ Orcas Island Community Church)
All island men are invited to attend a men's breakfast at Orcas Island Community Church on Saturday morning, February 25.  Recreational chef Stan Armstrong and friends will be creating something fresh and unique out of in-season produce and select meats, and there will also be a vegetarian option.
   During the breakfast, associate pastor Brian Moss will share about the journey that led him from the small Iowa farm where he grew up, to touring the country as a musician and songwriter, to becoming a pastor here on Orcas Island.
   The breakfast will run from 8:30 - 10:30 am. Admission is by donation. You can sign up at the community church office or call 376-6422 to attend.


FREE MOVIE AT THE SENIOR CENTER
(Saturday, February 25, 4:00 pm @ the Senior Center)
Life Church presents WAR ROOM, a feature-length film released nationwide in August of 2015 that explores the power that prayer can have on marriages, parenting, careers, friendships, and every other area of our lives. The movie will be shown at the Senior Center on Saturday, February 25, starting at 4:00 pm. This is a free community event with free popcorn and 50 cents for soda.

SAINT JOAN AT ORCAS CENTER
(Saturday, February 25, 7:30 pm, Streaming Live Center Stage)
The National Theatre production of Saint Joan is broadcast live from London to Orcas Center on Saturday, February 25, at 7:30 pm. Bernard Shaw's play depicts Joan of Arc, a young girl who declares a bloody mission to drive the English from France. She threatens the very fabric of the feudal society and the Catholic Church across Europe. From the torment of the Hundred Years' War, the charismatic Joan of Arc carved a victory that defined France. Josie Rourke directs Gemma Arterton as Joan of Arc in this electrifying production broadcast live from the Donmar Warehouse. Don't miss the convincing and compelling revival of Saint Joan, a production which radiates with contemporary resonance.

RUSALKA AT ORCAS CENTER
(Sunday, February 26, 1:00 pm, Live in HD Center Stage)
Orcas Center presents the New York Met's Rusalka by Dvořák streaming Live in HD on Sunday, February 26, at 1:00 pm. Islanders will be smitten by the enchanting opera about a mermaid who gives up her voice to become mortal after falling in love with a human prince. The mysterious story is complete with an aria to the moon, dancing wood sprites, a water gnome who presides over a meadow, and a witch who dwells in the forest. This haunting love story is inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid." 
   If you've not yet experienced the Metropolitan Opera streamed from New York City to Orcas Center, now you can be initiated to a "front row" opera with internationally acclaimed greats.

NATIVE PLANT SALE

WSU Extension and San Juan Islands Master Gardener Foundation present their annual Native Plant Sale. ORCAS ISLAND COMMUNITY GOSPEL CHOIR WITH STEPHEN NEWBY
(Rehearsals: Saturday, March 4; 
Performance: Sunday morning, March 5, 9:30 am worship service)
This March, islanders are invited to join a weekend to sing with the Orcas Island Community Gospel Choir, led by returning composer/conductor Dr. Stephen Newby of Seattle Pacific University. The weekend will showcase a hybrid of genres ranging from gospel to classical and jazz. Songs will include psalms, gospel songs and spirituals like "Calling My Name," "Dwell in the House," "My Lord, What a Mourning," as well as original compositions by Newby like "I Shall Delight" and "Mercy."
   There will be two rehearsals on Saturday, March 4, culminating in a performance on Sunday morning, March 5, during the church's 9:30 am. worship service.
   The event will be hosted by the community church. 


MUSIC ADVOCACY GROUP'S 20TH ANNIVERSARY SCHOOL BENEFIT CONCERT
(Sunday, March 5, 3:00 pm in the Old Gym)
SCHOOL MUSIC MATTERS! 
Come to the Orcas School on Sunday, March 5, at 3:00 pm and support Orcas Public School Music. Music will be performed by the Community Band, Island Sinfonia, Choral Society and school groups.

LEARN TANGO! COMMUNITY DANCE CLASS 
(Monday, March 6, 7:00 - 9:00 pm @ the Odd Fellows Hall)
Local instructors are again offering their community dance class on Monday, March 6, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Odd Fellows Hall. We will be offering Tango and are honored to have Stan and Kay Miller assisting us on this marvelous dance. Stan and Kay have been dancing Tango for quite a few years and are very proficient at it. Instruction will begin promptly at 7:00 pm followed by dancing at 8:00 pm. The classes are free and no partner is needed. Learn to dance which
is good for your health, well being and ability to relate to others. Come out and enjoy yourself while learning of improving your knowledge of dance.

The National Theatre production of Hedda Gabler: "I've no talent for life." Just married. Bored already. Hedda longs to be free . . . Hedda and Tesman have just returned from their honeymoon and the relationship is already in trouble. Trapped but determined, Hedda tries to control those around her, only to see her own world unravel. Tony Award-winning director Ivo van Hove (A View from the Bridge at the Young Vic Theatre) returns to National Theatre Live screens with a modern production of Ibsen's masterpiece. Ruth Wilson (Luther, The Affair, Jane Eyre) plays the title role in a new version by Patrick Marber (Notes on a Scandal, Closer).

SPAMALOT AT ORCAS CENTER
(Thursday-Saturday, March 16-18 & 23-25, 7:30 pm, Center Stage;
a RECEPTION will follow the Opening Night production on Thursday, March 16)
This March Orcas Center will feature the award-winning musical Monty Python's Spamalot, on Center Stage with Doug Bechtel directing an all-island cast. The musical comedy adapted from the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a highly irreverent parody of the Arthurian Legend and the mythic Search for the Grail. Get your tickets now! (Parental discretion advised - some adult language.)
   Orcas Center has been planning this extensive musical theater production for over a year, with a cast of 25 Orcas Islanders, directed by Doug Bechtel along with music director Jim Shaffer-Bauck, choreographer Suzie Fraser, Stage Manager Lynda Sanders, costume designer Kathy Walsh, set construction lead Dan Walker, Prop Master Thelma McTavish and dozens of volunteers making set pieces, sewing, painting and working back stage. Spamalot will run for six performances, March 16-18 and March 23-25.
There will be a reception following the Opening Night production on Thursday, March 16.

Look out Oscar, the Finnie is coming! Its award season here in the San Juans. Know Stewardship Network someone who deserves to walk the stewardship red carpet? Nominate them for a Good Steward Award!  Since 2008, the Good Steward Awards, affectionately known as "Finees," have been sponsored by the Stewardship Network of the San Juans in honor of individuals, families, teachers, students and businesses that have demonstrated a long-term commitment to preserving the land and sea of the San Juan Islands archipelago in their daily lives. Award recipients will be presented with large pottery "Finees," fish-shaped creations handcrafted on Orcas Island. Award presentations will be in April, as part of island Earth Day festivities. TAX HELP TO BE OFFERED AT ORCAS SENIOR CENTER 
(Fridays, through April 14, 9:00am - 4:00 pm @ the Orcas Senior Center)
Jim Biddick (Lions Club) and John Carl (Kiwanis Club) will be available to assist with taxes at the Orcas Senior Center on Fridays, February 10 through April 14 from 9:00 am till 4:00 pm. The tax service is for low-to-moderate income taxpayers ($52,000).
The program is not associated with the IRS TaxAide program and is not a for-profit program. The taxpayer will be responsible for all information provided and for the completeness and correctness of the tax return. Returns must be filed by mail.  
The service is free, but a donation of $5 is appreciated to cover program costs; any profit for the program is donated to the Senior Center. (2.9/2.16)

EDC OFFERS FREE WORKSHOP ON BUSINESS FEASIBILITY FOR ENTREPRENEURS
(Tuesday, February 28, 10:00 - 11:30 am. at the Orcas Island Fire Department)
Advance registration is required.
All entrepreneurs wonder if there is a market for their business ideas, or if they will make money from them. Join the San Juan County Economic Development Council for a FREE workshop to learn more about Business Feasibility on February 28, from 10:00 - 11:30 am. on Orcas Island, sponsored by Island Market and the Small Business Development Center (SBDC). 
One of the most important steps for entrepreneurs in starting their new businesses is to assess their ideas' feasibility, to minimize risks and to increase their businesses' potential for success. This workshop will be led by Tony Salas of the SBDC, and a management consultant for over a decade. LOCAL ARTIST GAIL ANDERSON-TOOMBS SHOW AT ORCAS CENTER
March Art Exhibit: Color for a Winter Day
(Opening reception: Friday, March 3, 5:50 - 7:00 pm)
Please, visit the lobby of Orcas Center during the month of March to see the newest work of local artist Gail Anderson-Toombs and be ready to smile! This is her first show at the Orcas Center and will contain over 50 new pieces never seen by the public and of course some older favorites. The newest paintings have items like vintage jewelry, keys, beads and more fun things incorporated in them.....providing a very unique and colorful art show for a winter day!
Please, join Gail to celebrate this opening at a reception at Orcas Center on Friday, March 3, from 5:50 pm - 7:00 pm and visit during open hours during March. The "On and Off the Wall" art show in the Madrona room will be opening at the same time so lots to see and lots of fun! See you then.

ORCAS ISLAND PIONEER MUSEUM REOPENS
When is the last time you were at the Pioneer Museum? Have you met our new Director, Brittney? Have you seen the discounts and new items at the Gift Shop?
The Pioneer Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday, 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm or by appointment. Admission is by donation, there is a craft table for children to enjoy, and a great selection of Gift Shop items. Now is the time to visit your local museum!
