 Join island visitors and residents to share music, spoken word, and other performances on the night when we come together in that ancient ritual of community and communion. The Café is open from 5:00 - 10:00 pm and Open Mic begins at 7:30 pm. Come out and support Orcas Senior Center! Each Thursday in March, Doe Bay Open Mic Night gives a percentage of the sale from each entree sold to Orcas Senior Center. Great food, music and a fantastic cause! CROW VALLEY STRING BAND & BroGrass TO PLAY THE WHITE HORSE ON ST. PATRICK'S DAY

Come celebrate St Patrick's Day with live Irish music by the Crow Valley String Band and BroGrass on Friday, March 17, from 7:00 to 10:00 pm at the White Horse Pub. Band members, Tashi Litch, Kaj Litch, Rachel Bishop and Jim Litch will make their annual return to their Celtic musical roots for this lively evening of fine traditional Irish music.
The Crow Valley String Band is known for its appealing repertoire of high-energy traditional music delivered with keen arrangements for string instruments. Rachel, Tashi and Kaj originally hale from the British Isles and invite you to join this timeless and endearing tradition of gathering at the village pub for an early evening of music, food, and cheer - under the spell of the Irish!

This March Orcas Center will feature the award-winning musical Monty Python's Spamalot, on Center Stage with Doug Bechtel directing an all-island cast. The musical comedy adapted from the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a highly irreverent parody of the Arthurian Legend and the mythic Search for the Grail. Get your tickets now! (Parental discretion advised - some adult language.)
Orcas Center has been planning this extensive musical theater production for over a year, with a cast of 25 Orcas Islanders, directed by Doug Bechtel along with music director Jim Shaffer-Bauck, choreographer Suzie Fraser, Stage Manager Lynda Sanders, costume designer Kathy Walsh, set construction lead Dan Walker, Prop Master Thelma McTavish and dozens of volunteers making set pieces, sewing, painting and working back stage. Spamalot will run for six performances, March 16-18 and March 23-25.
There will be a reception following the Opening Night production on Thursday, March 16.

MARCH FOR MEALS!

 We will be holding our annual fundraiser for our Meals on Wheels program on Saturday, March 18, from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm. The Now Legendary Spring Brunch will be hosted by Chef Christina Orchid, featuring Chefs Jay Savell and Ian Cassinos.
Together, we will be serving up a menu that is sure to bring you feelings of pure delight. The Meals on Wheels Brunch this year will include: Our Classic Eggs Benedict, Strawberry Ricotta Blintzes, Broccoli 'Shroom Scramble, Thick Cut Bacon, Farmer's Maple Sausage, Homestyle Breakfast Potatoes, Fresh Cut Fruit Salad, Assorted Pastries and Preserves from Christina's own Red Rabbit Farm.

LIVING AND DYING WELL ON ORCAS ISLAND

Molly Roberts, Suzi Rose, Meika Neenan, and Dorian King (Hospice NW) will serve on a panel discussion about options and consequences of choices regarding where and how individuals live their remaining days on or off the island. Panel participants have helped countless people transition and will be able to offer an overview of how support and hospice works on the island.

SINGING AND THE BRAIN
Aniruddh Patel, Tufts University Professor of Psychology
(Saturday, March 18, 5:00 pm @ Orcas Island Community Church)
 Humans may be the only species that speaks, but we are just one of many that sing. How is human song similar to and different from those of other singing animals? Did humans develop singing and music for an evolutionary purpose? Can regular singing influence our brain structure in positive ways? This lecture by a leading authority in cognitive neuroscience will address questions like why humans sing and how music is related to brain function.
Aniruddh ("Ani") Patel joined Tufts University in 2012 as Associate Professor of Psychology, after working as Senior Fellow at The Neurosciences Institute in San Diego. He studies the relationship between music and language, exploring the mental foundations of these distinctively human abilities. His work uses many methods including human brain imaging, theoretical analysis, acoustic research, and comparisons with other species. Patel has served as President of the Society for Music Perception and Cognition. He is author of Music, Language and the Brain (Oxford University Press, 2017), for which he won the ASCAP 2008 Deems-Taylor Award.

Are you signed up for our Third Annual March Turtleback March? The San Juan County Land Bank and San Juan Preservation Trust invite you to the third annual MARCH TURTLEBACK MARCH, a 5 mile "Up and Over" hike on the Turtleback Mountain Preserve!
We will depart promptly at 1:00 pm from the South Trailhead parking area (Deer Harbor Road/Wild Rose Lane) on board a Camp Orkila bus to the North Trailhead. From there it's "up and over" the mountain on an amazingly beautiful 5-mile hike back to your car.
Be sure to dress for the weather, bring water/snacks and, most importantly, friends!

ORCAS MONTESSORI SCHOOL TO HOST : FAMILY CONVERSATIONS

The Orcas Montessori School will be hosting three evenings for parents. Entitled How Satisfied are you with your Family Conversations?, the sessions can be attended as a series or stand alone. They are all free for parents, grandparents, relatives and any family member over 11 .

Come along with the Orcas Island Senior Center on guided explorations of local parks with Trillium Swanson. Our first outing will be a walk along the Crescent Beach Trail on Friday, March 24, 1-3 pm. Join us as we walk through the Land Bank property on the flat trail that stretches between Mount Baker Road and Crescent Beach. We will listen and watch for signs of spring, and enjoy the view of Crescent Beach when we emerge from the trail, overlooking the water. Please meet at the Senior Center to ride our van to the trailhead so we can drop you off and then pick you up on the other end of the trail. This activity is FREE. Join us for an exciting performance by scientist professional, Hazen Audel - featured on National Geographic television! This FREE family event is open to the whole community!
K-12 students have started planning their projects! Funhouse staff and volunteers can assist students who are interested in entering a project.
Wandering Wizards will be judging exhibits, and ALL participants receive a prize. High school and middle school students are eligible for up to $2000 in college scholarship money. It also looks great on college applications!

JENS KRUSE TO SPEAK AT ORCAS CENTER

Does the late stage of the Weimar Republic in Germany hold lessons for the current moment of the American Republic? A presentation by Jens Kruse, Professor Emeritus of German, Wellesley College
"History does not repeat itself, but it does instruct." So starts the recently released On Tyranny by the eminent historian Timothy Snyder. In his presentation, Jens Kruse attempts to assess what instruction we can derive, at our current historical moment, from a comparison of the years 1932/33 in the Weimar Republic in Germany to the years 2016/17 in our American republic.
Jens Kruse was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1949. He has taught German language and literature on all levels of our curriculum and published books and articles on Goethe, Kafka, and other authors. Most recently, he has prepared, for eNotatedClassics, annotated electronic editions of Kafka stories such as "The Metamorphosis" and the "Hunger Artist."

TAYLOR 2 AT ORCAS CENTER

The Taylor 2 Dance Company
will hold a master class for advanced dancers from 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm on the night of the performance included with ticket.
Paul Taylor's Taylor 2 is the six-member company that brings Paul Taylor's dances to venues of any size with all the artistry of the world renowned choreographer's work - representing the wide range of athleticism, humor and emotion found in his dances. Mr. Taylor looked back to the 1954 origins of the Paul Taylor Dance Company for the structure of his new company: six professionals with a particular gift for his style who perform his work throughout the world.
Orcas Center is indeed one such small isolated community that would otherwise be unable to see Paul Taylor's work. We are eager to have Taylor 2 grace our stage again and share the work of dancemaker Paul Taylor, one of the seminal artists of the 20th and 21st Centuries, who continues to shape the homegrown American art of modern dance that he has helped define since he became a professional dancer and pioneering choreographer in 1954.

WRITE DOE BAY

Write hosts award-winning authors/writers of genres ranging from memoir, fiction, poetry, essay, songwriting, artistic process, storytelling, and photography. Write welcomes participants at any stage of their creative path including those who are ready to take their first steps. April's Write welcomes Wildflowers Photography Artist and Writer Joy Prouty; award-winning Memoir Author and Write Teaching Artist Alum Claire Bidwell Smith; Novelist and Editor Sam Ligon; Poet, Pie Baker, Essayist, and Author Kate Lebo; Drummer, Traveler, Non-Profit Organizer and Ugandan Exchange Musician Faustine Hudson; and Singer/Songwriter Mikey Gervais. This event is 2017's ONLY Write Workshop and is open to just 25 participants. Tickets are selling fast.

THE VIKING VOICE
We're a small school newspaper created by students at Orcas Island High School. Our newspaper is published within The Islands' Sounder, the community newspaper.
Printing costs money - $400, to be precise. Advertising is our primary method of collecting funding in order to continue giving a voice to the students; creativity costs.
Advertisers can buy a full page ad for 400 dollars, a half-page ad for 200 dollars, or a regular-sized ad for 60 dollars. Ads will also be displayed on the website. The Viking Voice is also offering a two-for-one, where one regular-sized ad will be placed in the next two editions for 100 dollars.
We also want to provide community members a way to contribute to this student publication even if they aren't owners of a business. The Viking Voice's Patreon is open to monthly donations; patrons who pledge three or more dollars per month will be included in a "patrons" section in the print edition.

All work must be complete and ready for display upon delivery. This show consists of work from our local creative community, so don't be shy! The exhibit will fill the lobby and Madrona Room at Orcas Center during the month of April, with an artist reception on Friday, April 7, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm.
TAX HELP TO BE OFFERED AT ORCAS SENIOR CENTER
(Fridays, through April 14, 9:00am - 4:00 pm @ the Orcas Senior Center)
Jim Biddick (Lions Club) and John Carl (Kiwanis Club) will be available to assist with taxes at the Orcas Senior Center on Fridays, February 10 through April 14 from 9:00 am till 4:00 pm. The tax service is for low-to-moderate income taxpayers ($52,000).
The program is not associated with the IRS TaxAide program and is not a for-profit program. The taxpayer will be responsible for all information provided and for the completeness and correctness of the tax return. Returns must be filed by mail.
The service is free, but a donation of $5 is appreciated to cover program costs; any profit for the program is donated to the Senior Center. (2.9/2.16)

Join SAFE San Juans for our 1st annual SAFE on the Rocks 5k in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month!
This twilight fun run will feature glow sticks, glow paint, a post-race party with music, food, raffle lottery tickets, family-friendly activities, and much more! Even if you want to walk the route or just come for the festivities starting at 8:00 pm, SAFE on the Rocks will have something fun for everyone.
Races kick off at 8:00 pm, with race staging starting at 7:00 pm and the post-race family fun at 8:30 pm!

EDC OFFERS FREE WORKSHOP ON BUSINESS FEASIBILITY FOR ENTREPRENEURS

 All entrepreneurs wonder if there is a market for their business ideas, or if they will make money from them. Join the San Juan County Economic Development Council for a FREE workshop to learn more about Business Feasibility, on March 20, from 12:30 - 2:00 pm on San Juan Island, sponsored by the Small Business Development Center (SBDC).
One of the most important steps for entrepreneurs in starting their new businesses is to assess their ideas' feasibility, to minimize risks and to increase their businesses' potential for success. This workshop will be led by Tony Salas of the SBDC, and a management consultant for over a decade. The course will cover the steps necessary to assess the market, manage risk, determine economic and technological feasibility, and to ensure greater success for a startup or business expansion.

HOW TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR YOUR WILL'S EXECUTOR

You are invited to the Orcas Island Senior Center for a will workshop Monday, March 20, from 1:00-2:00 pm. Considering all the tasks that fall into the lap of one's Executor, creating an addendum to a will can make it unnecessary for an Executor to search for account numbers and customer service contact information. Virginia Erhardt has created a scrubbed version of such a document to share with friends. This document includes the additional information and instructions that will inform a will's Executor of all the necessary tasks, how to accomplish them, and the order in which it would be important to address these matters. The material presented will cover advance funeral arrangements, dealing with probate of a will, and information/documents an Executor needs in order to complete the processing of financial details of an estate. March Art Exhibit: Color for a Winter Day
Please, visit the lobby of Orcas Center during the month of March to see the newest work of local artist Gail Anderson-Toombs and be ready to smile! This is her first show at the Orcas Center and will contain over 50 new pieces never seen by the public and of course some older favorites. The newest paintings have items like vintage jewelry, keys, beads and more fun things incorporated in them.....providing a very unique and colorful art show for a winter day!
