SENIOR CENTER: ENJOY NEARBY NATURE

Come along with the Orcas Island Senior Center on guided explorations of local parks with Trillium Swanson. Our first outing will be a walk along the Crescent Beach Trail on Friday, March 24, 1-3 pm. Join us as we walk through the Land Bank property on the flat trail that stretches between Mount Baker Road and Crescent Beach. We will listen and watch for signs of spring, and enjoy the view of Crescent Beach when we emerge from the trail, overlooking the water. Please meet at the Senior Center to ride our van to the trailhead so we can drop you off and then pick you up on the other end of the trail. This activity is FREE. On Tyranny by the eminent historian Timothy Snyder. In his presentation, Jens Kruse attempts to assess what instruction we can derive, at our current historical moment, from a comparison of the years 1932/33 in the Weimar Republic in Germany to the years 2016/17 in our American republic.

The Taylor 2 Dance Company
will hold a master class for advanced dancers from 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm on the night of the performance included with ticket.
Paul Taylor's Taylor 2 is the six-member company that brings Paul Taylor's dances to venues of any size with all the artistry of the world renowned choreographer's work - representing the wide range of athleticism, humor and emotion found in his dances. Mr. Taylor looked back to the 1954 origins of the Paul Taylor Dance Company for the structure of his new company: six professionals with a particular gift for his style who perform his work throughout the world.
Orcas Center is indeed one such small isolated community that would otherwise be unable to see Paul Taylor's work. We are eager to have Taylor 2 grace our stage again and share the work of dancemaker Paul Taylor, one of the seminal artists of the 20th and 21st Centuries, who continues to shape the homegrown American art of modern dance that he has helped define since he became a professional dancer and pioneering choreographer in 1954.

CLAY CAFE CELEBRATES ARTS IN OUR SCHOOLS

Purchase your special favorites, and have fun painting them with the colorful glazes provided. A-OK (Art for Orcas Kids) will fire your pieces and have them ready for pick-up in time for Mother's Day and Father's Day gifts.
Clay Café is a fundraiser for A-OK, a program of OIEF, which brings local artists into the public elementary and middle schools to provide quality art instruction to our students.

WASHINGTON POET LAUREATE @ ORCAS CENTER
(Monday, April 3, 7:30 pm in the Madrona Room)
Tod Marshall, serving as Washington State's Poet Laureate from 2016-2018, will read his poems and give a poetry lecture: "An Evening of Poetry with Tod Marshall," on Monday, April 3, 7:30 pm in the Madrona Room at Orcas Center. Marshall will present a workshop at the Orcas Island Library from 12:00 - 4:00 pm.
Washington State's Poet Laureate serves to build awareness and appreciation of poetry - including the state's legacy of poetry - through public readings, workshops, lectures, and presentations in geographically diverse areas of the state. Tod Marshall is a poet and professor at Gonzaga University. Marshall is a 2015 recipient of a Humanities Washington Award for outstanding service and creativity in the humanities. Marshall directs the writing concentration and coordinates the visiting writers series at Gonzaga University where he is the Robert K. and Ann J. Powers Endowed Professor in the Humanities. He enjoys backpacking and fishing and spends about a month of every year in a tent.

Write hosts award-winning authors/writers of genres ranging from memoir, fiction, poetry, essay, songwriting, artistic process, storytelling, and photography. Write welcomes participants at any stage of their creative path including those who are ready to take their first steps. April's Write welcomes Wildflowers Photography Artist and Writer Joy Prouty; award-winning Memoir Author and Write Teaching Artist Alum Claire Bidwell Smith; Novelist and Editor Sam Ligon; Poet, Pie Baker, Essayist, and Author Kate Lebo; Drummer, Traveler, Non-Profit Organizer and Ugandan Exchange Musician Faustine Hudson; and Singer/Songwriter Mikey Gervais. This event is 2017's ONLY Write Workshop and is open to just 25 participants. Tickets are selling fast.

The performances are June 23, 24, 30 and July 1, 2017.
Synopsis
While at a café, a man dies. But his cell phone will not stop ringing. The woman at the next table, Jean, picks up the cell phone and ends up stuck in the middle of all his troubles, meeting his widow Hermia, his mother Mrs. Gottlieb, and his mistress. In the course of meeting all these people, she ends up falling in love with the dead man's brother, Dwight. The dead man himself, Gordon Gottlieb, eventually tells his last moments himself.

As winter is waning and you begin to muse about your spring projects, I propose that you put the Actors Theater of Orcas Island's 12th Annual PlayFest on your to do list. We have selected this year's fabulous seven plays, which are available for your reading enjoyment behind the front desk at the library.
Performances will be May 26, 27 and Jun. 2, 3, and 4. Auditions will be held from 6-8 on Wednesday Mar. 29, and 6-8 p.m. on Sunday Apr. 2.
In addition to well-known and seasoned contributors, we have four new playwrights this year and as always are asking for you to expand your list of wonderful things you've done in your life by joining us as a new director or a new actor.
DEER HARBOR CHARTERS WHALE AND WILDLIFE TRIPS

It's time for Deer Harbor Charters to begin offseason whale and wildlife trips. Trips depart daily from Deer Harbor Marina at 12PM, normally lasting about two hours, unless we have a whale report and have to travel further. Orca and humpback whales have been sighted lately, as well as Steller sea lions, lots of bald eagles, harbor seals and porpoises.

students at Orcas Island High School. Our newspaper is published within The Islands' Sounder, the community newspaper.

Printing costs money - $400, to be precise. Advertising is our primary method of collecting funding in order to continue giving a voice to the students; creativity costs.
Advertisers can buy a full page ad for $400, a half-page ad for $200, or a regular-sized ad for $60. Ads will also be displayed on the website. The Viking Voice is also offering a two-for-one, where one regular-sized ad will be placed in the next two editions for $100.
We also want to provide community members a way to contribute to this student publication even if they aren't owners of a business. The Viking Voice's Patron is open to monthly donations; patrons who pledge three or more dollars per month will be included in a "patrons" section in the print edition.

Orcas Center invites all artists to bring in their Sculpture-3D-Collage work (including work in glass, wood, paper, metal, ceramic, fabric or whatever) on Wednesday, April 5, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. All work must be complete and ready for display upon delivery. This show consists of work from our local creative community, so don't be shy! Don't miss this opportunity to share your creative vision with all of us!
The exhibit will fill the lobby and Madrona Room at Orcas Center during the month of April, with an artist reception on Friday, April 7, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm.
TAX HELP TO BE OFFERED AT ORCAS SENIOR CENTER
(Fridays, through April 14, 9:00am - 4:00 pm @ the Orcas Senior Center)
Jim Biddick (Lions Club) and John Carl (Kiwanis Club) will be available to assist with taxes at the Orcas Senior Center on Fridays, February 10 through April 14 from 9:00 am till 4:00 pm. The tax service is for low-to-moderate income taxpayers ($52,000).
The program is not associated with the IRS TaxAide program and is not a for-profit program. The taxpayer will be responsible for all information provided and for the completeness and correctness of the tax return. Returns must be filed by mail.
The service is free, but a donation of $5 is appreciated to cover program costs; any profit for the program is donated to the Senior Center. (2.9/2.16)

The Orcas Island Senior Center is collecting donations of interesting and unique items of value for our annual Granny's Attic rummage sale, to be held on April 29 from 10am-3pm.
We are collecting kitchen ware, items for bath and bedroom, Christmas and other seasonal décor, sporting goods, tools, baskets, collectibles, jewelry, yard and garden items in working condition, pet supplies, games, toys, and crafting supplies including quality linens and accessories.

1st ANNUAL SAFE on the Rocks 5K

Join SAFE San Juans for our 1st annual SAFE on the Rocks 5k in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month!
This twilight fun run will feature glow sticks, glow paint, a post-race party with music, food, raffle lottery tickets, family-friendly activities, and much more! Even if you want to walk the route or just come for the festivities starting at 8:00 pm, SAFE on the Rocks will have something fun for everyone.
Races kick off at 8:00 pm, with race staging starting at 7:00 pm and the post-race family fun at 8:30 pm! Race entry is $25. All racers will receive a t-shirt, completion medal, and other cool giveaways!
Headlamps are required for participation and will be available for rent for a minimum donation of $5.00, if you do not have your own.

ROSARIO MUSIC CONCERT AND HISTORICAL NARRATIVE

 Enjoy a presentation of music and photography that walks guests through the history of the Moran family and the Rosario estate with Christopher Peacock. Highlights of the presentation include the historic Moran Photograph Collection, Phantom of the Opera music performed on the Mansion's 1,972 pipe Aeolian organ with the silent film, stories of the Mansion's most colorful residents, and Christopher's original piano compositions played on the 1900 Steinway Grand Piano. Complimentary and open to the public.

INTRODUCTION TO EFT WORKSHOP: WHAT'S THIS THING CALLED TAPPING?

Here's a workshop description: Did you know that there is a revolutionary way you can relieve mental, emotional or even physical pain or suffering? You will learn a self-help process combining knowledge of ancient Chinese Acupuncture meridian points and modern psychology. Properly applied, EFT can realign the negative energy and discontinue the discomfort that it causes.
This workshop is your opportunity to learn its history, how to use it, and experience it for yourself. EFT has been useful in relieving phobias such as fear of heights, public speaking, hyper-fear of snakes, spiders or other critters, as well as food or tobacco cravings, chronic pain, unresolved anger or prolonged grief. This workshop is designed use this technique as a first aid tool for your daily life.

EDC OFFERS WORKSHOP ON PHOTOGRAPHY FOR BUSINESS

67% of consumers consider image quality "very important" when making a purchase online. To turn browsers into buyers, business owners must show potential customers their products in the best possible light, and help them to connect with products and services in a way that words - or mediocre photographs - cannot. Learn what kinds of photos will work for business purposes, ways to use photographs through media like websites and print, and the practical aspects of producing and outputting photos.
Noted photographer, Mark Gardner, is based in the San Juan Islands and has worked as a full-service provider of individual, family and business photography for over a decade. Gardner has published two books (including one with photographer Art Wolfe) and he teaches photography workshops locally. He also maintains a website of San Juan Islands stock images.
COMMUNITY DANCE CLASS

We will offer another session of Tango with Stan and Kay Miller.
We will review previous steps and add new ones. Instruction will begin promptly at 7 pm followed by dancing at 8 pm. The classes are free and no partner is needed. BIOCHAR WEEKEND WORKSHOP
(Saturday and Sunday, April 8-9, Orcasong Farm)
This hands-on skill-building weekend will take you through the science and latest research on biochar, but also get you skilled up on all the necessary steps to create a biochar burner, burn the char, inoculate it with beneficial micro-organisms, and apply it to the gardens at Orcasong Farm.
We'll have the burners we create over the weekend for continued use in a neighborhood BioChar Cooperative.
BIOCHAR = better food, better soil, it sequesters carbon, and is a great island use for woody biomass!
Join local Forest Ecologist Carson Sprenger & Biochar Researcher Kai Hoffman-Krull for a fun, illuminating & hands-on weekend at Orcasong. Camping onsite available and meals included!
ORCAS MONTESSORI SCHOOL HOSTS WORKSHOPS FOR PARENTS
(April 11, May 10, 5:30-7:00 pm Firehall)
Workshops are entitled "How Satisfied are you with your Family Conversations?" The sessions can be attended as a series or stand alone. They are all free for parents, grandparents, relatives and any family member over 11.
Free childcare is available at the Montessori School during the sessions from 5:15-7:15. If you will be using the childcare, you must RSVP to the school one week in advance of each evening.

March Art Exhibit: Color for a Winter Day
Please, visit the lobby of Orcas Center during the month of March to see the newest work of local artist Gail Anderson-Toombs and be ready to smile! This is her first show at the Orcas Center and will contain over 50 new pieces never seen by the public and of course some older favorites. The newest paintings have items like vintage jewelry, keys, beads and more fun things incorporated in them.....providing a very unique and colorful art show for a winter day!
