ORCAS CURRENTS LECTURE: THE SECRET TRAVELS OF KILLER WHALES
(Saturday, October 29, 2:00 pm @ Orcas Island Community Church)
Dr. Brad Hanson, Wildlife Biologist, Northwest Fisheries Science Center
In Conversation with Joe Gaydos, SeaDoc Society
Southern Resident Killer Whales spend most of the summer months in the waters of the San Juan and Gulf Islands, foraging for Chinook salmon returning to the Fraser River in British Columbia. But until recently little was known about their travels during most of the year - from fall through spring - as these whales had been spotted only infrequently during this time. Hanson's group at the Northwest Fisheries Science Center is using GPS tracking systems embedded in selected whales' dorsal fins to fill this gap in the scientific understanding their behavior. This Orcas Currents lecture is cosponsored by the SeaDoc Society.
Click here for more details about this lecture.

MORAN STATE PARK SEEKING TOOL DONATIONS
Friends of Moran is starting a tool drive for the Park.  When we learned that volunteers, including camp hosts were using their own tools to help repair signposts, etc. around the Park this past summer, we were a bit shocked.
With over 80 buildings to maintain, including 22 of which were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 30s, the work never ends and tools burn out or, worse, get stolen.  And while power tools specifically are always on the list of items to replace, Park staff patiently waits for funding. As governor Jay Inslee once said ... "Our state parks are being held together by duct tape and baling wire."
So, if you have a tool or two cluttering your basement that has not seen the light of day in years, please, consider donating it to Moran State Park.  All tools welcomed. Tools can be dropped off at the Park Office, Wednesday through Saturday, from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. Thank you! (##)

This is one of our major fund-raisers of the year. The festival provides substantial funds to keep our doors open for Senior Meals, classes, assistance, and numerous community events.
The Holiday Festival will include a silent auction, live music, an exciting raffle and good food.  Shoppers will find handmade candles, ceramics and pottery, hand-printed cards and photographs, handmade jewelry, upcycled accessories, and cashmere clothes for adults and children.
There are still a few vendor tables left, so if you are interested in participating as a vendor, please contact Arron at 360-376-2677.  We hope the Festival will be enjoyable and successful for everyone and we look forward to seeing you there!

(Tuesday, November 1, 5:30 - 7:30 pm @ Orcas Mandala Yoga Studio)
A Guided Yoga & Meditation Workshop with Suzi Zobrist
November 1st is the Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) and a time when the veil between worlds is thinnest. As the season changes and the leaves and fruit fall to the Earth, we can also explore our own Death.
Please, join Suzi Zobrist for a guided Death Meditation. This Ceremony can be a life changing process that helps to show you where you are holding yourself back in your life, in relationships, career goals, personal development, or behavioral patterns you are repeating.
This powerful Ceremony will include a 1-hour Yoga practice followed by a Guided Meditation where you will face your own death and see where in your life you have held back from living your most vibrant life, not lived or spoken your truths to those you love, and so much valuable information that only arises when faced with death.
Please, bring a notebook to record your epiphanies and realizations. Open to all levels.
WORKSHOP: $20
