What Will Eastsound Look Like in the Future?

Comments and Input Sought for Planning Purposes  
of the Eastsound Urban Growth Subarea Plan

When: Thursday, October 13, 6:00 - 8:00 pm
Where: The Lundeen Room at the Orcas Senior Center

The Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce and the Eastsound Planning Review Committee (EPRC) are hosting a public meeting seeking input to the Eastsound Urban Growth Subarea Plan, which is up for review this year.

Important considerations are densities (housing, retail/ commercial, traffic/parking), village character (walk/bike ability, streetscape, design), and amenities, public spaces and various opportunities.

OPEN MIC NIGHT @ THE DOE BAY CAFÉ WITH HOST SEAN TOWNSEND
(Thursday Evenings - Sponsoring Friends of Moran in September)  
Join island visitors and residents to share music, spoken word, and other performances on the night when we come together in that ancient ritual of community and communion. The Café is open from 5-10 pm and Open Mic begins at 7:30 pm. Come out and support Friends of Moran! Each Thursday in September, Doe Bay Open Mic Night gives a percentage of the sale from each entree sold to Friends of Moran. Great food, music and a fantastic cause!  This week our host is Sean Townsend.

ROSARIO MUSIC CONCERT AND HISTORICAL NARRATIVE
(SATURDAYS ONLY at 4:00 pm starting September 24)
Enjoy a presentation of music and photography that walks guests through the history of the Moran family and the Rosario estate with Christopher Peacock. Highlights of the presentation include the historic Moran Photograph Collection, Phantom of the Opera music performed on the Mansion's 1,972 pipe Aeolian organ with the silent film, stories of the Mansion's most colorful residents, and Christopher's original piano compositions played on the 1900 Steinway Grand Piano. Complimentary and open to the public.

WHALE OF A SHOW @ ORCAS CENTER
(Saturday, September 24, 6:30 pm)
It is time for the Orcas all-kid talent show! Directed by Didier Gincig and crew, this annual event is an opportunity to see children and youth of all ages share their performing arts talents including singing, dancing and musicianship. Skits and family acts also. All ticket proceeds benefit Orcas Center's youth programs.

ORCAS ISLAND FARM TOUR
(Sunday, October 2, 11:00 am - 3:00 pm) 
Sponsored by Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce 
This year the map and guide will serve as a passport, with a sticker showing proof of purchase, and different stamps to be collected at each farm you attend. We again are using rainbow flags to mark entrances to farms. 
The Kitchen offers a Farm Tour Brunch in their courtyard from 9:30 -11:00 am, fee $15 per person, $8 for 12 and under. 
Once again San Juan Transit will be shuttling two busses around the island starting at The Kitchen and other departure points, the fee $8 per person, a convenient and eco-friendly option. The Senior Center bus will be available for seniors. 
There will be a Orcas Farm Tour T-shirt, custom printing will be available at The Print Shop in Eastsound Village, and bring your own garment to the Farm Tour Party and have it printed for $10. 
At the end of the day, enjoy a soiree at Orcas Farm about a mile past Doe Bay, from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm, with live local music, DJ Teacher's Pet, Free Farmers Potluck, Lion's Club Beer Garden sponsored by Island Hoppin Brewery available for purchase.
Admission Information: $10 per person, $25 per family


THE 3rd ANNUAL ORCAS ISLAND FILM FESTIVAL
The 3rd Annual Orcas Island Film Festival will take place Friday, October 7 - Monday, October 10.

SALISH SEA FESTIVAL
(Saturday, October 15 @ Rosario Resort)
9:00 am: talks, demos and tours all day
5:30 - 8:00 pm: Taste of the Salish Sea
Attendees at the 1st Annual Salish Sea Festival will enjoy workshops on seaweed and sushi, tour an acclaimed local salmon hatchery, boat to tour the Lopez shellfish hatchery, and engage in inspiring educational activities focused on the incredible bounty of the Salish Sea marine food system, ending with a spectacular Taste of the Salish Sea.
The festival is the first of its kind, bringing together seafood lovers with engaging speakers and panels on salmon conservation, tribal and local traditions, history and challenges of shellfish and seafood production in San Juan County. This is a chance to learn about the sustainability, unique tastes and production of the bounty of the Salish Sea.
Admission Information: Varies - $25 per person, with option for tours. Taste of the Salish Sea, $10 per person plus Taste tickets.

FINAL WEEK OF SCHEDULED KAYAK TOURS
(10:00 am & 2:00 pm, daily through Sunday, October 2) 
Our last scheduled kayak tours of the season will be Sunday, October 2, at 10:00 am & 2:00 pm at Deer Harbor Marina. We may be able to continue offering tours later in October if weather cooperates. Reservations will be available by phone within a week of the desired date. If we add trips, they will be available to book online, as well. It has been a super summer on the water. Have an awesome autumn!

ORCAS ISLAND BLOOD DRIVE

Thanks to all who have participated this summer, we have surpassed our benchmarks due to the many repeat donors here on Orcas, and some newcomers as well. And thanks also to the volunteers of the Lions Club with assistance of the the Kiwanis and their friends and, of course, the Fire Department who opens up their space for us to use.

9th ANNUAL "SAVOR THE SAN JUANS" DATES HAVE BEEN EXTENDED 
(Thursday, September 22 - Saturday, November 12) 
This year's 9th Annual "Savor the San Juans" dates have been extended beyond October to run from September 22 (the first day of fall) through November 12 in order to include early harvest festivals and the three island film festivals. From wine tasting to harvest dinners, farmers' markets to farm tours, and film festivals to a new Salish Sea Festival, please help us promote our bountiful fall feast for the senses to your guests - and enjoy these special events yourself!

WASHINGTON STATE PARKS 2016 FREE DAYS
(Saturday, September 24)
Washington State Parks is offering a "free day" on Saturday, September 24, when a Discover Pass is not required to visit a state park. This means you can park at trailheads or recreation facilities without hanging a Northwest Forest Pass or Discover Pass or paying a park or refuge entrance fee. Please note, free days apply only to day use (not overnight stays or rented facilities). A Discover Pass is still required to access lands managed by the Washington state departments of Natural Resources and Fish & Wildlife on these days. Thank you for your support!

HERITAGE HARVEST FEAST TO BENEFIT ORCAS ISLAND HISTORICAL MUSEUMS 
(Saturday, September 24, Reception: 5:30 pm; Feast: 6:30 pm @ Red Rabbit Farm) 
On Saturday, September 24th, you do not want to miss an evening of fine dining and good cheer at Red Rabbit Farm. Bowls and platters are filled with the best Farm to Table items from the bounty of the Fall harvest. One long table is beautifully set inside a timber wood barn. 
Time: This unforgettable evening begins with a reception at 5:30 pm followed by the Harvest Feast at 6:30 pm.
Place: The Feast will take place at Red Rabbit Farm located at 216 Payton Lane with parking in meadow. Please, NO parking on the road. Look for Red Rabbit Farm's sign on Deer Harbor Road.
Tickets: The ticket is $125 per person. This event supports the ongoing stewardship of island history at the Historical Museums and tickets sell out early. EDC ENTREPRENEURS TO PARTICIPATE IN "LAUNCH SAN JUAN ISLANDS" COMPETITION 
The EDC invites entrepreneurs to participate in the business plan competition, "Launch San Juan Islands." Entrepreneurs can bring their business ideas to the next level in the second annual EDC Launch San Juan Islands business plan competition, created by the San Juan County Economic Development Council and sponsored by local businesses.
Participants will receive instruction in business planning and marketing, plus follow-up mentoring - and some will win cash prizes to help launch their businesses.
Launch San Juan Islands will start in October 2016 and run through early December 2016.
The cost to participate is $85 (or $65 if registration received prior to September 19.). Deadline to enter: September 25th.  This fee covers direct costs for course materials and events.

LEADERSHIP SAN JUAN ISLANDS PROGRAM

2017 marks the 13th year of the Leadership San Juan Islands (LSJI) program, a local leadership training course that helps introduce islanders to the interconnecting "systems" that make up daily life throughout the county. During the sessions, participants meet with current leaders and professionals, discuss and interact over local issues, visit key locations throughout the county and practice valuable facilitation and leadership skills. We will close for the season on Saturday, October 8. Our employees will have a short vacation and Drirul Shamsid-Deen will continue operating a dinner restaurant: a pop up of sorts under his management. Named: "Wintertide at West Sound," which opens Wednesday, October 26  -  Friday, December 23 (9 weeks). Wednesdays - Fridays ONLY.  Closed Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. (#)

A note from owner Bob Olmsted: "It's with disappointment and sadness that we tell you Café Olga will be closing in mid-October. The building on Urner Street in Eastsound has been sold, and Bev and I have lost our lease. This year marks Café Olga's 35th year on Orcas. Will it reopen in yet another location? We don't know, but we hope so. The Journey Continues." (#)

COMMUNITY DANCE CLASS: THE EAST COAST SWING
(Monday, October 3, 7:00 - 9:00 pm @ the Odd Fellows Hall)
Local instructors are again offering their community dance class on Monday, Oct 3, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Odd Fellows Hall.  We will be offering another session of East Coast Swing. We will review previous steps and add new ones. Instruction will begin promptly at 7:00 pm followed by dancing at 8:00 pm.  The classes are free and no partner is needed. Learn to dance which is good for your health, well being and ability to relate to others. Come out and enjoy yourself while learning or improving your knowledge of dance.

BEGINNING UKULELE CLASS 
(Tuesdays, October 4 - November 1, 4:30 - 5:30 pm @ the Senior Center) 
Always wanted to learn how to play the ukulele? This class is for you! Explore the basics of chord formation, strumming and finger-picking. Start with simple folk songs and move into whatever you love to sing! We will get going quickly on this fun and social instrument, working both as a group and individually so people can go at their own pace.  The class will culminate in a short set at the Seniors Have Talent Shows on November 5 and November 12, which is optional, though encouraged.
Classes will be held at the Senior Center on Tuesdays from 4:30 - 5:30 pm, Oct 4, 11, 18, 25, and Nov. 1 for a total of five classes. Class fee is $75 for non-members, $25 for members. Bring your ukulele. Thanks to the generosity of Four Winds Camp we have several loaner instruments available for students who do not have their own. Class taught by Carolyn Cruso.

EDC ENTREPRENEURS TO PARTICIPATE IN "LAUNCH SAN JUAN ISLANDS" COMPETITION  
The EDC invites entrepreneurs to participate in the business plan competition, "Launch San Juan Islands." Entrepreneurs can bring their business ideas to the next level in the second annual EDC Launch San Juan Islands business plan competition, created by the San Juan County Economic Development Council and sponsored by local businesses.
Participants will receive instruction in business planning and marketing, plus follow-up mentoring - and some will win cash prizes to help launch their businesses.
Launch San Juan Islands will start in October 2016 and run through early December 2016.
The cost to participate is $85. Deadline to enter: September 25.  This fee covers direct costs for course materials and events.

FABULOUS FERMENTATION WITH REGINA ZWILLING

CLASSES AT ORCAS MANDALA STUDIO 
"Turning Inward ~ Finding Balance Between Effort and Ease" Fall Yoga Immersion with Suzi Zobrist
Join Suzi in this Yoga Immersion designed to cultivate deep rest as we transition into Autumn. This 5-day Yoga Immersion will focus on processes for turning inwards; resting and deeply restoring our physical health, building immunity and reconnecting with what truly sustains us on deeper levels. We will explore how to establish healthy rhythms and routines that support us to care for ourselves, our relationships and that provide a solid grounding for skillful, inspired living. 
Each class will begin with chanting & meditation. Move through a flowing SATYA floor series into a dynamic alignment-based yoga practice, followed by deeply restorative postures and a long Savasana.  
IMMERSION: $90 for all 5 classes or $24 per class.

Yoga Basics 5-week Series with Christine Comito 
Thursdays, October 6, 13, 27, November 3, 10 (No Class 10/20); 11:00 am - 12:15 pm 
Starting a yoga practice is exciting but can be intimidating & overwhelming. Yoga Basics is a wonderful opportunity to begin your yoga practice over the course of 5 weeks. Each time we step onto the mat, we are all beginners. During this series we will breakdown foundational poses and breathe deeply together. This is a wonderful way to prepare yourself for stepping into any and all of our group classes at Orcas Mandala. 
This class is recommended for new students as well as students that are interested in revisiting the basic alignment, breath and sequencing of a well rounded practice.

KIDS YOGA 4-WEEK SERIES with Susie Frank 
Mondays, October 3, 10, 17, 24; 3:30 - 4:15 pm 
This 4-class Yoga Series for Kids offers the fundamentals of basic yoga poses and easy breath work through games, pose sharing, and specific instruction. This class is for children who want to learn the poses, stretch and move, and experience quieting the body- all while having fun! Ages 7-10 with the option of contacting Instructor for different ages.

FRIENERGY: THE JOY OF FRIENDS MAKING ART TOGETHER
JoEllen Moldoff, BJ Arnold and Michelle Reed in the Gallery

Orcas Center will feature the work of three local artists, BJ Arnold,  JoEllen Moldoff, and Michelle Reed from September 2 - October 4 in the lobby of the Center.  In addition to this show, On-And-Off The Wall by artists in the community will be exhibited in the Madrona Room.  Everyone is invited to the opening reception to meet the artists and enjoy refreshments and conversation.
BJ,  JoEllen and Michelle show their work at Mia's Café in Eastsound.  Paintings of BJ and JoEllen have been exhibited in the San Juan Islands Museum of Art. All three artists have exhibited their work at the Palm Springs Art Museum. BJ is a member of the Orcas Island Artworks in Olga.

Washington Federal is pleased to present the Artist of the Month for September, Carla Stanley.
