ACTORS THEATER PRESENTS "THE OTHER PLACE" 
(Performances September 15, 16, 22, 23, 24, 7:30 pm @ the Grange) 
This Tony nominated Broadway play tells the heartwarming story of Juliana Smithton who has invented a drug that is in final clinical trials and may be able to arrest the progression of dementia.   As she tells us, the drug will never be able to bring back memories that are lost because the brain cells that held those memories are gone.  But if successful, the drug will stop the progression of the disease. This play, Directed by Doug Bechtel, stars Aimee Johnson, Kevin Doyle, Bethany Moreradiant and Travis Baker. Language and subject matter may make this play unsuitable for pre-teens. Show runs 90 minutes without an intermission. Tickets are $10 and are available at Darvills Book Store, on-line at  orcasactors.org and at the door.

We are in search of the best Senior (55+), Super Senior (65+), Women's, and Men's golfer on the Island. Let's find out who on September 16th or 17th. In an effort to get a better turn out, and for all to have the opportunity to compete this year, you can pick your day and time. You just must be playing with others in your division. WILD & SCENIC FILM FESTIVAL: ORCAS CENTER

Celebrate the equinox at Orcas Center with the Wild & Scenic Film Festival, an evening of inspiring documentaries about young people who are healing the earth. This year's lineup of short films will focus on our planet's next generation of change-makers-kids who are inspiring hope by making a positive difference all over the world. The 5th Annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival will feature environmental and adventure films and is co-hosted by the San Juan Preservation Trust and Orcas Center.  Cocina Latina will be offering delicious tacos and tamales for sale in the Madrona Room at 6:30 pm before the films begin, as well as during intermission!  Tickets: $15, $9 students, $5 Subsidized Tickets available at the Box Office.

RECLAIM THE ROCK @ ORCAS CENTER                                                          ( Saturday, September 23, 1:00 pm - 7:00 pm @ Live Music Outback  Stage)              " Reclaim the Rock," aka Silly Season Cessation Soiree, is a mini music festival outdoors behind Orcas Center, Outback Stage near the Storage Building. By Islanders, for Islanders! The lineup includes Funk Sway, Dust Bunnies, JP and the OK Rhythm Boys, Turtleback Brass, Mandy Troxel, and Carl Burger. Music for the whole family - there will be food vendors, and a "Beer Garden." Bring chairs and/or blankets for seating. Tickets are $25 Adults and $15 for students. Kids under 12 get in free. $5 Subsidized Tickets available at the Box Office.

CONCERT FOR A SCHOOL IN ETHIOPIA
(Saturday, September 23, 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm @ Orcas Mandala Yoga Studio) 
Hank Turnquist (Orcas Islander, Teacher and Musician), is headed to Ethiopia this October to help build a school in the highlands outside of Lalibela. This project is funded entirely by individual donors. Please come for an intimate evening of Hank's original music to help raise money for building materials. Suggested donation $10.

JP AND THE OK RHYTHM BOYS 
(Saturday, September 23, 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm @ Random Howse)
JP, Gordon, and Anita will once more  be bringing their ever-popular blend of fiddle, guitar, bass, and voice (and, sometimes, ukulele, banjo, mandolin, and, of course, saw) to Eastsound's favorite Thai restaurant/bar. They'll be playing favorites, old and new: swing, originals, jazz standards, waltzes, hoe-downs, hits of the 50s and 60s, anything that catches their fancy and can be done with a fiddle, some ok rhythm, and three voices. There will be a couple of surprise guests jumping in for a few songs, too! How fun! No cover, but there will be tip jars - the performers are compensated by your
generous donations therein, so bring some extra cash and they will be SO
grateful! And will play so much better!

HISTORY MATINEE: PEACE WEAVERS

Candace Wellman, author of Peace Weavers: Uniting the Salish Coast through Cross-Cultural Marriages, will talk about her book at a free history matinee. 

These stories of four First Nations Women who married white settlers, shatter stereotypes and honors the women's  exceptional endurance, strength and adaptability.

This is a free community event sponsored by the Orcas Island Historical Museums.

ORCAS WOMEN'S COALITION MEETING

Orcas Women's Coalition (OWC) is hosting our Fall quarterly meeting at the Orcas Public School Cafeteria.  Feel free to arrive befo re 4:00 pm for social networking and light refreshments.  The meeting begins promptly at 4:00 with Opening Exercises, Announcements and Action Team Updates.   After a brief  break, Representative Kristine Lytton. 40th Legislative District, will speak with us about women in politics, followed by Q&A.

EDC "LAUNCH SAN JUAN ISLANDS" COMPETITION
(Pre-registration before September 18, Deadline September 25)
Participants will receive instruction in business planning and marketing, plus follow-up mentoring-and some will win cash prizes to help launch their businesses. Thousands of dollars in cash prizes will be awarded to contest winners this year. The greater goal, however, is to help every participating entrepreneur to advance their business. "Launch San Juan Islands" will start in September 2017 and run through November 2017. The cost to participate is $65 if registration received prior to September 18 or $85 thereafter.  Deadline to enter: September 25. The fee covers costs for course materials and events.

ORCAS ISLAND GARDEN CLUB

Thom Thorton from Cloud Mountain Farm will join the Orcas Island Garden Club for a discussion on berries. Did you know that we can grow an incredible variety of berries in the Northwest? Mr. Thorton will focus on techniques for growing small fruiting plants like blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries and even kiwis. Admission is free and all are welcomed! 



AUDITIONS FOR CHRISTMAS CAROL
(Wednesday -Thursday, September 20 - 21, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm @ Orcas Center)
Orcas Center will be presenting "A Christmas Carol" in December. This is the beloved  version that has become an island tradition, complete with Jim Bredouw's brilliant and heartwarming music.  This production of "A Christmas Carol" is open to anyone. We encourage anyone to audition for any role, and gender is not an issue.  Come prepared to read or preferably speak a short memorized piece and sing a short song of your own choosing. Sample pieces of the script (sides) will be available at Orcas Center and the Library one week prior to auditions, if you would like to prepare to audition for a specific role.

RESILIENT GARDENING AND 'WEIRD WEATHER'
(Saturday, October 7, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm, @ Friday Harbor Middle School)
Is 'weird weather' challenging you and your gardening skills? You're not alone! PNW gardeners need to be prepared to handle longer, drier summers and water shortages, warmer average temperatures and more extreme weather. Join the Master Gardeners of San Juan County in welcoming Dr. Linda Gilkeson as the keynote speaker. Dr. Gilkeson's talk, "Resilient Gardens in a Changing Climate," will discuss how plants respond to environmental stress and how we can adapt our gardening methods to meet the challenges (and opportunities!) of a changing climate. The full day's schedule includes workshops on fruit and berry growing, gardening with children, dealing with wireworms, growing camellias, soil testing and local wildflowers. THE ORCAS ISLAND ARTWORKS AND CATKIN CAFE
The Orcas Island Artworks Gallery is a favorite Orcas destination housed in a historic building on the island's East side. Built in 1938 as a strawberry barreling plant, the lovingly restored landmark now showcases the best of our island's crafts and fine arts.Open daily from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.  Catkin Cafe is open Wednesday-Sunday, 9:00 am-3:00 pm.

ORCAS ISLAND HISTORICAL MUSEUMS
The Pioneer Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am to 4 pm or by appointment. Admission is $5, there is a craft table for children to enjoy, and a great selection of Gift Shop items. Come and experience the special exhibit of "Presenting Orcas Voices" at the Pioneer Museum.  The Crow Valley School is o pen by appointment.
