Important Change in Ferry Schedule to Orcas Island pointer
Beginning today, the 1:55 pm direct sailing from Anacortes to Orcas Island will operate on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through June 24.  Previously, this sailing only operated on Fridays and Sundays.  This change is reflected in the online reservation system and online schedules, but is not on the printed schedules.

Rock of Orcas is a Concert celebrating the 4th Annual Benefit Performance for Orcas
Center. Get your bangles and bandannas on: The creative team of Grace McCune and Jake Perrine (who brought you Moulin Rouge and Across the Universe) will serve up Orcas Center's next musical fundraiser extravaganza: ROCK OF ORCAS. This show will dive headlong and pell-mell into grandiose 80's rock!  Come see a massive local cast including three choirs, three dance classes, and two live bands!  Proceeds to benefit Orcas Center. FIREWISE INFORMATIONAL GATHERING

Warmer and drier weather is just around the corner, so now is the time to concentrate on doing what you can to protect your home and belongings in case of  wildfire. With that in mind, the San Juan Islands Conservation District will be hosting this event with 
representatives from the National Fire Protection Association, Washington Department of Natural Resources, and Orcas Fire & Rescue.

STEVE RESCH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP GOLF TOURNAMENT
(Saturday, May 20, 9 am @ Orcas Island Golf)
On March 26, 2016 Steve Resch lost his battle with cancer. 
In honor and in support of Steve's request, the first annual Steve Resch Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament will be held at the Orcas Island Golf Course.  We will have prizes, T-shirts, and much more. Beer/Wine and food will be available. 9 am registration, 
10 am (shotgun start), $100 green fees. All proceeds benefit the scholarship fund.

HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR WILL TELL HER LIFE STORY

Noémi Ban, 94-years old, a Hungarian-born American Jew and survivor of the Holocaust, will talk about her life. She is a Golden Apple Award-winning lecturer, public speaker, and teacher residing in Bellingham.

ORCAS ISLAND FOREST SCHOOL SPRING SOIREE  
(Saturday, May 20th 5 pm - 8 pm @ West Beach Farm)

Help us kick off our spring IndieGogo campaign with a lively, family-friendly party!  Featuring music by Mandy Troxel, Libby Valuzzi, Brother for Sale, and The Crow Valley String Band.  Tickets: $25. Admission includes wood-fired pizza, salad and a drink. Children under 12, free.





ISLAND SINFONIA CONCERT

Island Sinfonia, the chamber music orchestra in the San Juans, presents a concert of light classical music. The orchestra, directed by conductor Jim Shaffer-­Bauck, is composed of 25 instrumentalists, including student musicians and devoted adults. Island musicians are always invited to join. SAILING TEAM HEADED TO NATIONALS - TWO WAYS TO HELP

The Orcas High School Sailing Team is headed to the Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA)'s National Team-Racing Championship after winning the NWISA Team Race District Championships. They will be going to Norfolk, VA, May 26 - 28. Come show your support and help with travel costs at one of our upcoming events:

SUMMER WINE & ART SERIES - SUPPORTING SALMONBERRY SCHOOL

We are spending the summer celebrating Orcas artists, enjoying wine, and supporting a variety of our local non-profit organizations. Join us for a wine tasting, featuring Kriselle Cellars, and admire the student art that will adorn our walls as part of the Eastsound Art Walk. Cost is $15 per person for the wine tasting with all proceeds going directly to Salmonberry School.

Doe Bay Resort  and  Seattle Rock Orchestra   are partnering, once again, for our 3rd annual Seattle Rock Orchestra Memorial Day Live Music Weekend. There will be live music performances happening throughout the weekend, featuring Seattle Rock Orchestra's talented line-up of musicians. On both Saturday and Sunday, there will be a few small ensemble groups featured in the Doe Bay Café, as well as a large ensemble performance offered on the Doe Bay Main Stage at 2pm on Sunday. Live music in the Yoga Studio on both nights will be upbeat and dance-friendly. Plan to arrive Thursday or Friday. Monday is a holiday so plan a relaxed departure or stay on for this first week of summer.

GAIL PETTIS ELLA ET AL. CELEBRATING THE GREAT LADIES OF JAZZ
(Saturday, May 27, 7:30 pm @ Orcas Center) 
Gail Pettis is a two time winner of Earshot Jazz Golden Ear "Northwest's Vocalist of the Year" award.
Gail has chosen the fitting occasion of the 100th birthday celebration of the First Lady of Jazz herself, Ella Fitzgerald. The term et al. comes from an abbreviation for the Latin phrase et alia, which means "and others."  Pettis chose this term to illustrate her belief that "I never sing alone - I stand on the shoulders of all the greats who have come before me.  The show includes music by Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday and other greats. Gail will also feature some contemporary artists she considers to be personal heroes and role models. Joining Gail is the Darin Clendenin Trio and special guest, the Islands' own jazz great, Martin Lund.  Ticket are $20 adults / $18 students and available Monday May 8th at Darvill's Bookstore and available now online at: gailpettis.brownpapertickets.com .  Presented by Orcas Open Arts.

WOMEN'S SPRING LUNCHEON  
(Saturday, May 27, 11:30 am @ Orcas Senior Center)
All island women are invited to come hear adventurous long-distance hiker and new Orcas Islander Judy Stockwell speak at the annual Women's Spring Luncheon hosted by Orcas Island Community Church.  Stockwell will share her experience of walking the 500-mile pilgrimage trail, El Camino de Santiago in Spain, in 2014. The theme this year is "Stepping Out in Faith." The lunch will cost $20.

ARTSMITH SALON SERIES READING @ DARVILL'S

Hear two acclaimed Northwest poets, Laura LeHew and Jennifer Bullis, read at the last reading of the 2016/2017 Artsmith Salon Series season. The reading will be followed by a Q&A with the authors and a reception with light hors d'oeuvres.


 
OIEF FUNDRAISER FOR ORCAS PUBLIC SCHOOLS

The Orcas Island Education Foundation's annual fundraiser "Food for Thought" is themed  "The Wind in Our Sails."  You, the community -- our donors, are that wind.  Without your gift, we cannot provide the funding needed for programming at our public schools.  Salmon, ribs and a vegetarian option (with lots of side dishes) will be prepared by the Orcas Village Store.  The silent and live auction will include fun and unique offerings.  There will be a few surprises and we promise you will have a great time!  Tickets are $100 and can be purchased at oief.org or at the Chamber of Commerce.

EASTSOUND ART WALK IN JUNE
(Saturday, June 3, 11 am - 2 pm @ Locations throughout Eastsound)
Join galleries and businesses throughout Eastsound as we celebrate our local arts scene! Why go off island when you can find beautiful, functional, and handmade gifts right here and support our local economy? Take the afternoon to stroll and enjoy art, music, wine and snacks at various stops along the way. There will be special offers on gifts for the seasons as well upcoming holidays, and the festive community atmosphere which exemplifies Orcas Island at its best. The event is sponsored by the Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce. Maps will be available at all host businesses displaying the Art Walk poster (artwork by Grace Grantham).

FILM FESTIVAL OPEN CALL TO SUBMIT SHORT FILM PROJECTS
The Orcas Island Film Festival will award grants of $5,000 to three filmmakers to explore the San Juan Islands and use it as a canvas to create short films that inspire, inform and entertain. Submissions are being accepted from May 12th to June 2nd at midnight These three grant winning films will be featured at the 2017 Orcas Island Film Festival where the audience will choose a first prize winner who will be awarded a festival trophy and will have the honor of being featured in the prestigious Seattle International Film Festival in 2018.

THE SAILING TEAM IS HEADED TO THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!

The Orcas High School Sailing Team is headed to the Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA)'s National Team-Racing Championship after winning the NWISA Team Race District Championships over the weekend. Each team member has been asked to be responsible for a certain amount of fundraising to cover travel costs. CALLING ALL PARTNERS IN PHILANTHROPY: GIVE ORCAS MAY 1-19
(Awards Ceremony: Thursday, May 25, 3 - 5 pm @ Orcas Center)
www.GiveOrcas.org is live and open for donations! Over 20 organizations serving our community applied for funding; the Orcas Island Community Foundation Grants Committee has completed site visits, evaluated the proposals, and vetted the projects. Now the Foundation is seeking Partners in Philanthropy to help fund these valuable programs. Contributions of any size are welcome and donors may remain anonymous if so desired. Our goal is to have 500 Islanders "Give Orcas" this year -up from 260 in 2016.
You are invited to the Awards Celebration on May 25th from 3-5 pm at the Orcas Center. It is a great event honoring the work of so many who help make Orcas a vital community and we hope to see you there!

EDC TRADES TRAINING INITIATIVE - VISIT GiveOrcas
The San Juan County Economic Development Council (EDC) is pleased to announce that the Trades Education Initiative is participating in the GiveOrcas campaign. THE 2017 OC SUMMER THEATRE CAMP PRE-REGISTRATION
This year, camp will be open to 15 students ages 8 to 13. The activities of the camp will be based on African rhythms, songs, dances and student constructed musical, percussion instruments made out of junk.
There will be a short performance at the end of camp on Center Stage on June. 30.  Featured this year will be a 2 hour master class at 6:30 on June 29 on junk instruments given by Canadian musician and junk orchestra conductor, Paul Snider. http://www.paulsnidermusic.com/

ORCAS CENTER INTERNSHIP
Over the course of this internship, the Marketing/Advertising Intern will learn how various marketing channels including, print and electronic advertising, direct mail, website and social media can expand the audience of an arts organization. By working with the Marketing lead, the intern will be able to identify the marketing, advertising and promotional needs of Orcas Center and assist in the creation and implementation of various marketing campaigns to be launched during the summer. This is a great opportunity for a take-charge student to develop their marketing and advertising skills to execute a campaign from start to finish.  This is an unpaid position and will satisfy WA State school credit requirement.

EDC: SUCCESSION PLANNING FOR SMALL BUSINESS
(Wednesday, May 15, 1 - 2:30 pm @ San Juan Island Library)
All business owners need to devote time and energy to developing a succession plan for their business. With a succession plan, business owners can identify a person or entity who can continue the business if tragedy strikes or when they decide to retire or sell.  This workshop is free.  Advance registration is required.

MEDITATION CLASSES

MEDITATION: It's not what you THINK! Meditation for beginners group will meet weekly for 6 weeks. We encourage students to sign up for the series. There will be no class on the 29th (Memorial Day). Class size is limited to 10, suggested donation is $5.00/session for members and $10.00/ session for non-members. No students will be turned away for lack of funds.

CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL: MUSICIAN-IN-RESIDENCE

Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival brings Carnegie Mellon University music professor Monique Mead to Orcas to work with string players of all ages in the public school music program and at an Advanced Master Class for community members.
The week of intensive instruction culminates in the school music program's Spring Concert, "Waltzing Through the Ages," on May 18th at 7:00 p.m. in the High School gym.
Community musicians are invited to work with Monique Mead at an Advanced Strings Masterclass on Tuesday, May 16th, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in the high school band room.

HEALTH FOR WOMEN WORKSHOP

Restore Your Core: Pelvic Floor Health for Women  with Suzi Zobrist.  In this experiential self-care workshop, we'll go beyond "kegels" and learn how to access the subtle muscles of the pelvic floor. ORCAS ISLAND PIONEER MUSEUM "ORCAS VOICES" EXHIBIT

Orcas Voices uses the recorded stories and photographs of  local residents to preserve the history and culture of Orcas  Island. More than a hundred interviews
have been recorded,
transcribed, digitized and shared with families, residents, and
visitors.  Presenting Orcas Voices  strives to inspire further exploration of
the museum's collection and the stories  that make up Orcas history.
The Pioneer Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday, 11:00 pm to 4:00 pm or by appointment. Admission is by donation, there is a craft table for children to enjoy, and a great selection of Gift Shop items.  181 North Beach Road, Eastsound

ARTIST OF THE MONTH at WASHINGTON FEDERAL
The artist of the month at Washington Federal is Spirit Eagle, come and enjoy her art Mon - Fri from 9am -5pm throughout the month of May. Half of the proceeds will be donated to the Orcas Animal Protection Society in appreciation of their loving hearts, kindness, and care of their charges. Spirit Eagle works with oils, acrylics, fiber, and materials from nature She is a painter, sculptor, maker of masks, and a wood carver. Her masks may be seen at the Lambiel Museum on Orcas Island.
