Important Change in Ferry Schedule to Orcas Island
Beginning today, the
1:55 pm direct sailing from Anacortes to Orcas Island will operate on
Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through
June 24. Previously, this sailing only operated on Fridays and Sundays. This change is reflected in the online reservation system and online schedules, but is
not on the printed schedules.

wildfire. With that in mind, the San Juan Islands Conservation District will be hosting this event with
representatives from the National Fire Protection Association, Washington Department of Natural Resources, and Orcas Fire & Rescue.
STEVE RESCH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP GOLF TOURNAMENT

 On March 26, 2016 Steve Resch lost his battle with cancer.
In honor and in support of Steve's request, the first annual Steve Resch Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament will be held at the Orcas Island Golf Course. We will have prizes, T-shirts, and much more. Beer/Wine and food will be available. 9 am registration,
10 am (shotgun start), $100 green fees. All proceeds benefit the scholarship fund.
HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR WILL TELL HER LIFE STORY

GAIL PETTIS ELLA ET AL. CELEBRATING THE GREAT LADIES OF JAZZ

Gail Pettis is a two time winner of Earshot Jazz Golden Ear "Northwest's Vocalist of the Year" award.
Gail has chosen the fitting occasion of the 100th birthday celebration of the First Lady of Jazz herself, Ella Fitzgerald. The term et al. comes from an abbreviation for the Latin phrase et alia, which means "and others." Pettis chose this term to illustrate her belief that "I never sing alone - I stand on the shoulders of all the greats who have come before me. The show includes music by Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday and other greats. Gail will also feature some contemporary artists she considers to be personal heroes and role models. Joining Gail is the Darin Clendenin Trio and special guest, the Islands' own jazz great, Martin Lund. WOMEN'S SPRING LUNCHEON

 All island women are invited to come hear adventurous long-distance hiker and new Orcas Islander Judy Stockwell speak at the annual Women's Spring Luncheon hosted by Orcas Island Community Church.
Stockwell will share her experience of walking the 500-mile pilgrimage trail, El Camino de Santiago in Spain, in 2014. The theme this year is "Stepping Out in Faith."

Without your gift, we cannot provide the funding needed for programming at our public schools. Salmon, ribs and a vegetarian option (with lots of side dishes) will be prepared by the Orcas Village Store. The silent and live auction will include fun and unique offerings. FILM FESTIVAL OPEN CALL TO SUBMIT SHORT FILM PROJECTS
The Orcas Island Film Festival will award grants of $5,000 to three filmmakers to explore the San Juan Islands and use it as a canvas to create short films that inspire, inform and entertain.
Submissions are being accepted from
May 12th to June 2nd at midnight

These three grant winning films will be featured at the 2017 Orcas Island Film Festival where the audience will choose a first prize winner who will be awarded a festival trophy and will have the honor of being featured in the prestigious Seattle International Film Festival in 2018.
THE SAILING TEAM IS HEADED TO THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!
The Orcas High School Sailing Team is headed to the Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA)'s National Team-Racing Championship after winning the NWISA Team Race District Championships over the weekend. Each team member has been asked to be responsible for a certain amount of fundraising to cover travel costs. We are asking for donations, preferably $50-$100 although anything helps! Over 20 organizations serving our community applied for funding; the Orcas Island Community Foundation Grants Committee has completed site visits, evaluated the proposals, and vetted the projects. Now the Foundation is seeking Partners in Philanthropy to help fund these valuable programs. Contributions of any size are welcome and donors may remain anonymous if so desired. Our goal is to have 500 Islanders "Give Orcas" this year -up from 260 in 2016.
You are invited to the Awards Celebration on May 25th from 3-5 pm at the Orcas Center. It is a great event honoring the work of so many who help make Orcas a vital community and we hope to see you there!

EDC TRADES TRAINING INITIATIVE - VISIT GiveOrcas
The San Juan County Economic Development Council (EDC) is pleased to announce that the Trades Education Initiative is participating in the GiveOrcas campaign. THE 2017 OC SUMMER THEATRE CAMP PRE-REGISTRATION
This year, camp will be open to 15 students ages 8 to 13.
The activities of the camp will be based on African rhythms, songs, dances and student constructed musical, percussion instruments made out of junk.
There will be a short performance at the end of camp on Center Stage on June. 30.
Featured this year will be a 2 hour master class at 6:30 on June 29 on junk instruments given by Canadian musician and junk orchestra conductor, Paul Snider.

ORCAS CENTER INTERNSHIP
Over the course of this internship, the Marketing/Advertising Intern will learn how various marketing channels including, print and electronic advertising, direct mail, website and social media can expand the audience of an arts organization. By working with the Marketing lead, the intern will be able to identify the marketing, advertising and promotional needs of Orcas Center and assist in the creation and implementation of various marketing campaigns to be launched during the summer. This is a great opportunity for a take-charge student to develop their marketing and advertising skills to execute a campaign from start to finish.
This is an unpaid position and will satisfy WA State school credit requirement.

EDC: SUCCESSION PLANNING FOR SMALL BUSINESS

All business owners need to devote time and energy to developing a succession plan for their business. With a succession plan, business owners can identify a person or entity who can continue the business if tragedy strikes or when they decide to retire or sell. This workshop is free.

MEDITATION CLASSES

 MEDITATION: It's not what you THINK! Meditation for beginners group will meet weekly for 6 weeks. We encourage students to sign up for the series. There will be no class on the 29th (Memorial Day). Class size is limited to 10, suggested donation is $5.00/session for members and $10.00/ session for non-members. No students will be turned away for lack of funds.

CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL: MUSICIAN-IN-RESIDENCE

Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival brings Carnegie Mellon University music professor Monique Mead to Orcas to work with string players of all ages in the public school music program and at an Advanced Master Class for community members.
The week of intensive instruction culminates in the school music program's Spring Concert, "Waltzing Through the Ages," on May 18th at 7:00 p.m. in the High School gym.

TECH MADE SIMPLE - CONNECTING TO THE INTERNET

 This class will provide a very brief history of the internet, demystify some of the terminology, and provide insights into connecting to the internet. We will discuss the differences between LTE, DSL and Fiber connections. WiFi, Bluetooth and hot spots networks and more will be covered in this fun class. Offered for free and everyone is welcome.
FACEBOOK MARKETING WORKSHOP

 Social media is revolutionizing the way we use the internet, and its low- or no-cost tools can be used by small businesses to achieve remarkable results.
The course will start out with a basic overview of Facebook pages for business, and will cover setting up a Facebook page, optimizing your message for your target audience, creating a business ad, and tracking the results. Date: Wednesday, May 24, from 9:15-10:15am. Cost: Free. Class size is limited, advance registration is required.

ORCAS ISLAND PIONEER MUSEUM "ORCAS VOICES" EXHIBIT

Orcas Voices uses the recorded stories and photographs of
local residents to preserve the history and culture of Orcas
Island. More than a hundred interviews
have been recorded,
transcribed, digitized and shared with families, residents, and
visitors.
Presenting Orcas Voices
strives to inspire further exploration of
the museum's collection and the stories
that make up Orcas history.
The Pioneer Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday, 11:00 pm to 4:00 pm or by appointment. Admission is by donation, there is a craft table for children to enjoy, and a great selection of Gift Shop items.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH at WASHINGTON FEDERAL
The artist of the month at Washington Federal is Spirit Eagle, come and enjoy her art Mon - Fri from 9am -5pm throughout the month of May. Half of the proceeds will be donated to the Orcas Animal Protection Society in appreciation of their loving hearts, kindness, and care of their charges. Spirit Eagle works with oils, acrylics, fiber, and materials from nature She is a painter, sculptor, maker of masks, and a wood carver. Her masks may be seen at the Lambiel Museum on Orcas Island.
