'Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House'
A very popular 1948 film starring actor Cary Grant was 'Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House.' Based on the book by Eric Hodgins of an actual colonial style house in Connecticut, the story follows a man from the city who moves to the country with his family. There, they hope to build a magnificent rural home.

Creative Publicity Used In the old days, movie studios used clever publicity campaigns to promote films on a national scale. For Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House, RKO Studios had dozens of replicas built of the California home in the film, for the purpose of raffling them off. They hoped this would generate excitement and boost film ticket sales.

The Portland Connection The homes built to promote the film were located all over the country, including one in Portland, Oregon. Our local 'Mr. Blandings Dream House' is located in a nice but unassuming West Portland neighborhood.
