Public Works and Engineering Services

2016 Annual and Measure J & L Pavement Rehabilitation Project
The contractor, Bay Cities Paving & Grading Inc., continues pre-paving activities such as utility potholes, monument preservation, tree trimming, and minor concrete work on Descanso Drive, Whitehall Drive, La Cresta, and Altamount Drive.

The initial paving activities began last week on Ivy Drive starting with pulverization of the existing pavement and then mixing the cement to recycle the existing aggregates in the road for a new road base. Placement of asphalt is expected the this week.

PG&E continues to work on utility investigations and lowering all of their shallow underground gas lines on the streets that will be paved in 2016. They are working expeditiously to stay ahead of the City's contractor. PG&E will have five separate crews throughout the City over the next month. The City's contractor will not pave a street where PG&E has not lowered their gas lines. This coordination efforts with PG&E are on-going.

Orinda ranked #5 on list of
 "2016 Best Suburbs to Raise a Family in San Francisco Metro"

In a recent SF Gate article, Orinda is noted as #5 on the list of the top 100 Best suburbs for families in the Bay Area.

"Niche, the neighborhood review site, has ranked the
top 100 suburbs for families in the Bay Area. A key variable is quality of public schools, which is weighted 20 percent, more than any other factor.

In fact, of the top 10 suburbs, each scored an A+ for its schools. In the bottom 10, the school scores varied from B to C-.
The next highest weighted variable (15 percent) is cost of living, a subject in which Bay Area suburbs frankly aren't applying themselves. All 100 suburbs received D, D+ or D- marks.  One might as well toss the cost-of-living findings since they are basically uniformly bad across the board.
Suburbs were also ranked on the percentage of residents under 15 years old (weighted 12 percent). The reasoning presumably is the more kids, the better the place it is for kids.
But even here, the differences aren't always huge. For example, No. 12 Foster City has 18.5 percent youngsters, virtually the same as lowly No. 94 Newark at 18.8.
Other factors considered were:
  • Crime and safety: 10 percent;
  • Family amenities: 10 percent;
  • Real estate - including trends in housing prices, affordability and homeownership: 10 percent;
  • Residents 35-44 years old: 10 percent;
  • Higher education rate (bachelor's degree or higher): 7.5 percent;
  • Diversity: 5 percent."
