2015 Annual and Measure J & L Pavement Rehabilitation Project

Last week the paving contractor, Bay Cities Paving & Grading, Inc., completed paving activities on St. Stephens, from HWY 24 on/off ramps to Las Vegas Rd.  The contractor also began paving activities on Calvin Drive and Valley Drive. The roadway treatment for these two (2) streets is Full Depth Reclamation (FDR). This week, the contractor anticipates completion of paving activities on Calvin Drive and Valley Drive.

Today, the contractor began work on Overhill Road, conditions required that crews from Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) and East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) repair some of their underground pipes on the west side of Overhill Rd to (between Catherine Ct and Tara Rd). The paving contractor has modified their original work plan to work around this situation. While PG&E and EBMUD crews perform their repairs, they will focus on the east side of Overhill Rd (between Moraga Way and Catherine Ct). At this moment, no delays are expected to the general schedule of the project. The roadway treatment for this street is also FDR.

There are two (2) other streets pending for pavement rehabilitation: Camino Sobrante and Canon Drive. The roadway treatment that will be applied to these streets is also FDR. Next week, the contractor plans to start paving activities on Canon Drive.

Orinda Starlight Village Players Hold Season Auditions
Come Tread the Boards

The Orinda Starlight Village Players (OrSVP) holds its season auditions on Sunday, April 3 at the Orinda Community Center Park Amphitheater at 4 p.m. and on Tuesday, April 5 at the Orinda Community Center Carpentry Room at 7 p.m. This all-volunteer group has been presenting live theater in Orinda for over 30 years and is always looking for new volunteers, both on and off-stage:

The first production of the season will be Agatha Christie's Murder on the Nile directed by Suzan Lorraine. OrSVP is well known for its productions of Agatha Christie plays. Lorraine has been directing the Christie shows for the past several years to great acclaim, carrying on the tradition set by OrSVP founder Charlotte Meyer. Lorraine will need a variety of adult ages for this show. Rehearsals begin in late April. Performance dates are June 3-4, 10-11, 17-18, 24-25, 26, 30, and July 1-2.

The second production of the season is Robert Merrill's Aria's. This charming romantic comedy is premiering in the Bay Area. Merrill is a playwright from Southern California and will be traveling to Orinda to see the production so the OrSVP group will get to meet the author. Jill Gelster will direct the show. In past seasons, Gelster directed the comedies Wrong Window by Billy Van Zandt and Jane Milmore and Madness on Madrona Drive by Louis Flynn. Gelster will need a variety of adults as well as someone who can play a 7-year-old boy. Rehearsals begin in June and performances are July 22-23, 29-30, August 5-6, 7, 11, and 12-13.

The final production of the season will be Billy Van Zandt and Jame Milmore's Love, Sex and the IRS directed by OrSVP regular, Malcolm Cowler. Rehearsals for this production will start in August with performances Sept. 10, 16-17, 23-25, 29-30 and Oct. 1.

Come prepared to read from scripts for the Directors.
No prepared monologues are necessary.

An American Ascent : internationally acclaimed documentary
Free screening at the Orinda Library Auditorium
April 20, 2016 at 7 pm
AN AMERICAN ASCENT is a feature documentary about the
first African American expedition to tackle North America's highest peak, Denali.
In June 2013, nine African Americans set out to build a legacy by encouraging inner city kids to get outside. An American Ascent is a feature documentary from producers Andy Adkins, George Potter and James Mills, about the first African American expedition to tackle North America's highest peak, Denali.
Expedition member, Scott Briscoe, will introduce the film and speak about his on-going work with the National Outdoor Leadership School to help connect all Americans to the wild places that help to define our nation.
The nation's wild places from national and state parks to national forests, preserves, and wilderness areas belong to all Americans.  But not all American use those resources equally. A staggering number of American do not consider the outdoors as a place for them.
In 2013 the National Outdoor Leadership School set out to achieve an ambitious goal.  They aimed to put the first team of African-American climbers on the highest peak in North America, the Alaskan mountain called Denali.   Nine climbers set out to build a legacy and become role models for inner city kids and people of color.  Their gripping beautifully filmed story is involving, challenging and worth viewing.
Free and open to the public. First come, first seated.
