No matter how hot and muggy it gets, I will not complain. That is the deal I made with myself this past winter. Vermonters will gladly tolerate a few days of hot weather, knowing they are few, and not nearly as oppressive as most other places. We tell ourselves that many people would find highs in the upper 80's and lower 90's refreshing. In the meantime, we seek relief, and file away memories of swimming holes and images of the beach for future reference, when the days are shorter.
dog days, plural noun
1. the period between early July and early September when the hot sultry weather of summer usually occurs in the northern hemisphere
2. a period of stagnation or inactivity

The phrase 'dog days of summer' has been used with increased frequency in Northern Vermont in the last week. Technically, I don't think these few days of fine summer weather meet either definition, but there is an urgency to label them as such, and move on before the fleeting summer is gone.
Today, I celebrate summer!
