Lewis Gruner was a German engraver, chosen to be Prince Albert's court-appointed art advisor. His first task was the decoration of the Garden Pavilion in Buckingham Palace. This role occurred after many years of work in Italy, Spain, France, and finally England. Two of his other published volumes are "Specimens of Ornamental Art" and "Ornamental Designs for Decorators and Manufacturers." This volume prompted Prince Albert and many others to admire and appreciate the use of terra-cotta in architecture, thus increasing its applications later - such as at the South Kensington Museum, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Prudential Assurance Company.

During the early 20th century, it developed rolled plate glass, one of its mainstays. It continues to function now as Chance Glass Limited. Two very scarce issues of this periodical, from the era when Robert Craik McLean was its editor. McLean founded the "Inland Architect" in 1883, and edited its successor, "The Western Architect", for many years. He was one of the founders of the Western Society of Architects and of the Chicago Architectural Club. He knew most of the well known architects of his time personally, and so could write authoritatively about their work and the developments he observed in American architecture, particularly in the mid-west and west. These particular issues have photographic portfolios of works by Purcell and Elmslie, the 2nd most prolific of the Prairie School architects after FL Wright. Projects depicted include the Riverside Country Club, The Edison Shop in Chicago, The Minnesota Phonograph Co., The Merchants Bank in Winona, WI., and several beautiful residences.
