GBDS Happenings
Back to School BBQ

The Academies PTO sponsored a Back to School BBQ on September 7th at Camp Veritans in Wayne, NJ.

The PTO welcomed a large number of GBDS families and students who celebrated the beautiful late summer Sunday with a hot dog and hamburger BBQ. Children played many games and various vendors who will be running the after school programs shared what will be offered starting in October. This was a special opportunity to welcome returning families  while greeting new families.

Everyone left the BBQ with a full stomach and a positive feeling about the start of the year.

Back to School Night

N-2 through Grade 8 held Back to School Night on September 16.

The Multi-purpose room was filled with parents to meet and learn about the upcoming school year. The parents were greeted by Board of Trustees member and parent Michal Levison who sent a message of welcome and support. Susan Mittler from The PTO gave her welcome and encouragement to participate in PTO. She introduced the PTO Leadership Team of Sheila Barbach, Natalie Terdiman, Laurie Efrusy, Lymor Wasserman and Brigitte Pomarlen.

Robert Smolen, Head of School welcomed everyone and along with Rabbi Yaakov Traiger, Middle School Director and Mrs. Susan Scher, Early Childhood Director, introduced the teaching staff. The meeting then moved from the multipurpose room to all the classrooms where parents listened to each teacher's presentation about the programs and procedures for the school year.

Thank you to everyone who attended Back to School Night.

Early Childhood Apple Picking Trip
By Eve Levi
Early Childhood spent a fun-filled morning picking apples and exploring nature at Demarest Farms.  After taking a hayride to the apple orchard, the children filled their bags - and mouths - with sweet, crunchy apples.  We incorporated the apples into our lessons back at school:  estimating, graphing, sorting, cutting, baking, and learning Hebrew vocabulary related to apples.   We returned to GBDS tired, but happy!

Shana Tovah
Tashilch
September 29th at 2 pm

On the first day of Rosh Hashanah it is the custom to walk to a flowing body of water, to "cast away" the mistakes of the past year and resolve to be better in the year to come. We do this by symbolically throwing breadcrumbs into the water, where they will be carried away.

please send your child to school wearing

  • white GBDS t-shirt
  • sneakers
  • long pants/jeans
  • socks (we will be tucking pants into socks!)
  • hat

 Please also send children with

  • bug spray
  • Sunscreen

We will provide a VERY SMALL piece of bread for each student.

We will be walking to a nearby stream.

Parents are invited to join us in this custom.

Please note that there will be a regular dismissal. All students will be dismissed, back at school, to either car pool or the bus.

A Note from our Academies Coordinator
The Academies at GBDS are so excited to celebrate Sukkot! We are challenging all of our students to build a miniature sukkah out of recycled, repurposed or reused materials or materials found in nature. Please click here to read the attached flyer. The students are bringing home detailed instructions for building their sukkahs.

The integration of Judaic studies, mathematics, environmental studies, art and design makes this project an authentic and meaningful learning experience for our children.

The sukkot must be brought to school by October 3rd. They will be displayed at the school from October 5th (sukkah raising) through the night of the dinner in the Sukkah, which is on October 14th.

If you have any questions please contact your child/children's teacher.

I think this is a terrific way to start the year. Our students will benefit from an integrated project that encourages them to be creative and shows off their work.

Best Regards,

 Sheila Barbach

Alumni Corner

We are very proud of alumnus Samantha Radnor, a menswear designer for the fashion company Public School. Samantha's menswear line can be viewed in this live stream footage from the September 7th run-way show. Samantha attended The Gerrard Berman Day School from 1995-2001. Samantha attended middle school and high school at the West Orange Solomon Schechter. (GBDS' middle school was not yet founded.) Samantha then attended Indiana University for two years before transferring to the most revered fashion design school in the world, Central St. Martins in London, England. Enjoy the show!

Nurse's Corner
If you have been listening to the recent news, there is a respiratory virus that is affecting our young children, particularly those with respiratory problems. There is no medication to make it "go away" nor is it easy to differentiate from the common cold when the symptoms first start. Symptoms of the Enterovirus D68 are a fever, runny nose, sneezing and cough. The symptoms can become very severe very quickly with a child developing difficulty breathing.

The New York State acting Health Commissioner has said, "It is important that we follow common sense rules to prevent the spread of this virus, as we do for flu and other contagious illnesses. Because there is no specific treatment or vaccination against this virus, our best defense is to prevent it by practicing proper hygiene."

This virus has come to New Jersey, but not to our School. Our School's policy at times of raised concern for previous health issues has been to use anti-bacterials on entering the classroom in the morning and using an antibacterial after recess (before lunch) as well as recommending soap and water (hand washing) as necessary. Students with a cough are instructed to cough into their elbows, to use tissues to blow their nose, and to see the Nurse if these symptoms seem excessive. In addition, our cleaning crew works very hard to ensure that surfaces within the classrooms and the School in general, are kept as clean as possible.

Your job as a parent is to observe your child, keep them home if they exhibit symptoms of heavy coughing, sneezing, heavy nasal discharge and/or a fever. Symptoms usually last for up to a week. Avoiding large gatherings is important, but at this time of year when the entire community meets in the synagogue, it is especially important to keep your children home if they have symptoms of illness and to make sure that those around you are not exposing you and your family to possible infection.

This virus can affect adults as well as children, although children with respiratory illnesses (asthma, Reactive Airway Disease) seem to be more severely affected. We want to be pro-active in School and will begin using anti-bacterials every morning prior to entering the classroom. We will continue to use another antibacterial product at recess. Since families often want their own choice of products for their family, please send your child with the anti-bacterial of your choice. It should be labeled with your child's name and will be kept in their cubby/locker for their daily use. The antibacterial used at recess is named "Hands 2 Go" and is non-alcohol based foam and will continue to be used at that time of day.

Also, please remember that it is flu season and all students should be getting a flu vaccine. They are required by the State of New Jersey for all students in Nursery 2 through Kindergarten (under 5 years of age) by December 31, 2014. We recommend "flu vaccines" for all students, staff and family members.

Please let us know if your child is home because they are exhibiting any of these symptoms and please, be pro-active. Their health can affect the health of many other children and families.
