Spring Green, Betsy Buurma Morton

Betsy Buurma Morton, a native of Holland, Michigan, first studied painting with Cora Bliss Taylor of Saugatuck.  Betsy taught high school Art in Lexington, MA.  Since moving back to Holland in 1995 she has focused on watercolor painting and has been an active member of Holland Friend's of Art, the Holland Area Arts Council, and a weekly painting group.  She has taught watercolor classes and workshops at the Arts Council and at Lake Effect Gallery in downtown Holland, where her work is shown.

Betsy's paintings have been exhibited in many shows and competitions, receiving numerous awards.  She participated in Holland's public art projects "Pigs on Parade", "Re-Mastered" banners, and "Re--Cycled" banners.  Two of her paintings were chosen as top 20 finalists in Holland's first "Art in Bloom" competition, and again in 2014, and 2015.  She received the James Brandess purchase award at Saugatuck's 2012 Waterfront Invitational.   Also, her work is in many private and corporate collections including Macatawa Bank and "The Shannon Princess", a luxury barge which travels the Shannon River between Athlone and Killaloe, Ireland.

In Holland, Betsy is best known for her paintings of local scenery.  Tulip-lined streets, picturesque downtown spots, the lakeshore and children playing on the beach are a few of her favorite themes. Her work can be seen at Lake Effect Gallery in downtown Holland.  She lives in Holland's Historic District where she enjoys gardening, painting and walking the beautiful streets and parks of this area.

Each week leading up to Tulip Time, we'll highlight images from this year's Art in Bloom.

Brown Bag Lunch Concerts Return on 2nd Friday in February

Hope College
Brown Bag Lunch Concert
February 13
12-1 p.m.

Founded in 2008 and directed by Hope College piano professor Dr. Andrew Le (Drew), Brown Bag has rapidly become one of the most popular and innovative music events in the Holland area.  Built on the premise that classical music should be accessible by all, the series presents classical art music in a setting that is completely free of pretense: performers are required to wear jeans and talk to the audience about their selections, people of all ages are encouraged to come and go as they please, and everyone is encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch and make as much or as little noise as they wish.  Light beverages are also served.

The free Brown Bag concerts happen every month of the academic year at the beautiful Holland Area Arts Council from 12-1 p.m. Each hour-long program consists of a wide variety of musical offerings primarily from Hope students, faculty, and staff.
