Encyclopedia of transportation: social science and policy , ed. by Mark Garrett.  SAGE Publications, 2014.  4v  bibl  index  afp  ISBN 9781452267791 cloth, $595.00.  Reviewed in CHOICE May 2015.
This four-volume set, edited by urban planner and attorney Mark Garrett (UCLA), explores the many facets of transportation and its policies.  The work identifies and tackles questions of historical, sociological, political, global, and economic significance while providing scholarly insight on how transportation systems affect our daily lives, and how they will shape our future.  The introduction includes a brief history of transportation policy and a discussion of current issues.  The "Reader's Guide" organizes entries into broad topics such as "Facilities and Infrastructure," "Energy, Environmental, and Health Impact," "Safety and Security," or "Technology, Design, and Engineering."  Other useful tools include a chronology and a resource guide to sources, along with a glossary, detailed index, and three appendixes with reports and statistics from the CIA, US Department of Transportation, and the US Department of Energy.  Written by a cohort of international scholars and experts, the approximately 675 articles are remarkably readable and include headings, cross-references, and further readings interspersed with black-and-white illustrations and images.  Examples of topics covered include airport planning, canals and locks, distracted driving, road ecology, sustainable transportation, and urban walkways.  Whether one works within transportation or public policy fields, or is merely interested in the various modes, issues, and challenges of modern-day transportation that affect everyone on a daily basis, this comprehensive reference work should satiate all needs.  Summing Up: HHH  Highly recommended.  All academic and general readers as well as technical-program students and professionals/practitioners.-S. Markgren, Purchase College, SUNY
