AT THE END OF THE 2016-17 SEASON

May 26, 2017, New York, NYThe Pacifica Quartet, touring since 1994, announced its first member change in seventeen years. Violinist Austin Hartman and violist Guy Ben-Ziony will replace violinist Sibbi Bernhardsson and violist Masumi Per Rostad at the end of the 2016-17 season, respectively.

Mr. Bernhardsson, who joined the Pacifica Quartet in 2000, will leave the group to join the Oberlin Conservatory School of Music faculty. Mr. Rostad, who joined the group in 2001, will join the faculty of the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester.
Founding members Brandon Vamos and Simin Ganatra jointly commented : "Over the past 17 years, the Pacifica Quartet has played nearly 1,500 concerts all over the world from the monumental cycles of Beethoven and Carter to numerous premieres. We have traveled together, laughed together, learned together. The special bond we all share has greatly influenced us as musicians, artists and human beings. Our respect and admiration for all that Sibbi and Masumi have contributed to the quartet is boundless.

As we see them off and wish them well on their next adventures, we are thrilled to welcome both Guy and Austin to the ensemble at the start of the Quartet's 23rd season. Both share a strong passion and dedication to performing at the highest level. They are the perfect fit for the ensemble as we look to the future and prepare to embark on new, exciting projects ahead."

Gwyn Richards, Dean of the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University Bloomington, noted: "In the time that the Pacifica Quartet has been in residence at the Jacobs School, they have transformed our string chamber music program. In their pursuit of the highest standards of artistic expression, they have become role models for our students, and leading musical figures to the general public. All who admire them, are eager in anticipation of this new era, marked by the arrival of Austin Hartman, violin, and Guy Ben-Ziony, viola."

James Ginsburg, President of Cedille Records, said, "We're thrilled to be part of the Pacifica Quartet's prodigious growth and success from their debut recording in 1999 to their most recent, released this March. We've been delighted to see the Pacifica become recognized as one of the world's preeminent quartets as their recordings, particularly of the complete Mendelssohn and Shostakovich quartet cycles, have garnered outstanding reviews around the globe. We look forward to being part of the next chapter in this marvelous quartet's evolution."

Sibbi Bernhardsson commented: "I am eternally grateful for the amazing 17 years I had as a member of the Pacifica Quartet. I am proud of all the wonderful things we achieved together as an ensemble and loved playing and learning all the great quartet literature with these amazing musicians. I am very excited about the future that my family and I are about to embark on. At this point in my life, I am looking forward to making Oberlin our new home and exploring new professional adventures. While I say goodbye to the members of the Pacifica Quartet, I look forward to many years of friendship and to following their marvelous future projects."

Masumi Per Rostad remarked: "It was always a dream of mine to play viola in a string quartet. It has been a great privilege to have had the opportunity to play some of the hallmarks of the classical music literature in some of the most magnificent venues across the globe for close to two decades as a member of the Pacifica Quartet. I am proud of our many accomplishments together. Now, I am excited to continue my journey as a performing artist and honored to be joining the esteemed faculty of the Eastman School of Music."

Guy Ben-Ziony said: " I think that almost every violist has a secret dream from early on to become a quartet player, and I'm no exception I feel very privileged and fortunate to be joining the Pacifica Quartet, an extraordinary ensemble I have been watching from afar, never imagining that our paths would cross in this way. From our first meeting it felt like there was a great musical and personal connection, one with mutual openness and a passion for broader horizons that we could discover together.

Being an advocate for music education, I am beyond thrilled to join them as teachers at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, inspiring and supporting the next generation of musicians. Through teaching, I continue to learn and grow as an artist, a sentiment I know the members of the Pacifica Quartet share. I am looking forward to immersing myself in this beautiful chamber repertoire with my new colleagues, and to the beginning of a new era."

Austin Hartman added, "I am honored to be joining the Pacifica Quartet, an ensemble that is committed to artistic excellence and educating the next generation of musicians. I am thrilled to be a part of a team that shares my passion for performing concerts that inspire and engage audiences and a keen dedication to exploring the music of our time. I look forward to the road ahead and am excited about this new venture in music and friendship."

Hartman and Ben-Ziony will join Vamos and Ganatra as faculty members at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where the Pacifica was appointed quartet-in-residence in March 2012.
