School News
PASB Core Values
The spirit of community is greatly strengthened by shared values and common goals.  Joining our school community means behaving in an ethical manner by accepting and supporting the PASB principles.

RESPONSIBLE STEWARDSHIP

Being accountable to self, community, and the environment, managing resources effectively to build a sustainable future.
News from the Board
Are you interested in running for the Board of Trustees?

Pre-Candidate Workshop

The PASB Board of Trustees is elected by the parent community and works closely with the school administration in establishment of strategic direction for the school, holding the administration accountable for compliance with its policies and for generating desired results. Board members agree to give of their time - they may have children enrolled in the school, but recognize that they do not to serve in the capacity of any self-interest but instead in the name of the general PASB community. They do not receive any payment or benefits of any other kind.  The Board normally meets monthly on the third Tuesday of the month, in the evening.  Additional committee meetings are normally expected, as are 2-3 Board retreats each year.  The Board itself may have additional meetings, if needed.

NEASC/CIS Accreditation Visit and Self-Study Report
Next week, from April 23-29, PASB will welcome the  New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the Council of International Schools (CIS) joint accreditation team.  The purpose of their visit is to provide feedback on our two year self study. This is a vital component of the school improvement process. The accrediting team will spend a week meeting with committees, students, parents, Board of Trustees, PTA and looking over our self-study materials. Following are the conclusions of the self study report that we are sharing with the visiting team .

4th Destination Imagination  Creative   Day  - Starry Showcase Presentations
Date: Saturday, April 30, 2016
Time:  08:30am-12:00pm
Place: MPR (Music Room)

In just a few days we will have our final DI Creative Day for the year - the Starry Showcase Presentations! Your children have been working hard all year learning about the creative process and the time has come to show off their stuff! Please plan on joining us on Saturday, April 30th from 8:30 - 12:00 to watch all the teams present their solutions and take their turn in the Instant Challenge Room. It's time to celebrate creativity at PASB!  But we need your help: talk to your friends and your child's classmates about this program and invite them to come watch and share in the excitement. Everyone is invited! Our program is for and made by kids who want to participate in this process and our biggest ally in creating a strong program is to share it with others. Help us share your child's accomplishments and celebrate their process! And don't be late!

Community Service
A PASB community service group would like to invite everyone to a charity mission to help the dogs of the São Francisco de Assis shelter. The event organized by the Associação Brasileira Protetora dos Animais (ABPA) has the purpose of receiving dog food donations on Saturday, April 30th, 4PM, at Praça Ana Lúcia Magalhães to feed the more than 400 animals who consume 90kg of food daily. We would like to strongly encourage everyone to attend and contribute by bringing dog food or financial support. There will be a variety of cakes from Tortarelli, a beneficiary bazaar, an animal dress-up parade, along with raffles and giveaways. Please come (and bring your pets!) to support the institution in combating and preventing hunger in the animal shelter. Any help is wholeheartedly appreciated.

Donate dog food and participate!

Date: Saturday, April 30th
Time: 4PM
Entry ticket: a dog food package
Location: Praça Ana Lúcia Magalhães, at the end of the Pituba-Itaigara line, after Doces Sonhos

NHS and NJHS have now delivered the last portion of donations collected from this year's Easter Campaign held during the month of March, which raised donations ranging from non-perishable food items and chocolate Easter eggs to clothing and cleaning supplies. We collected more than 60 kilos of food, 40 liters/kilos of cleaning supplies, 50 Easter eggs, 30 pairs of shoes and 50 clothing items.  NJHS and NHS members had a rewarding experience delivering the donations to cancer institutes for children GACC and NACCI, and orphanages Instituição Beneficente Lar Escola Mundo da Criança in Lauro de Freitas and Ajuda Social à Criança in Itaigara. Both student organizations look forward to continue leading the PASB community in the next years in generating more smiles.

None of this would had been possible without the cooperation of all. Thank you!

Brazilian Program News
Portuguese 1 project - Charity is happiness!

Portuguese 1 recently began to discuss how we, as a class, can help our community. This project, known as Charity is Happiness, is the result of this discussion. In this project, we are asking all members of the community to donate clothes to GACC, a cancer organization, in order to help people there. The campaign will be running from April 25th to May 2nd. Here is the link to the website created by the students for your appreciation and for further information about the campaign. Please join us!
Secondary School News
  • ISSL Tournament: Reports from the Athletic Department indicate that our PASB athletes are doing well and playing with a lot of heart. We look forward to celebrating their achievements on Monday morning during the High School STUCO-led pep rally during Global Leadership.
  • Global Leadership Half Day
  • Kindness/Anti-Bullying and Responsible Stewardship: The grade 6-9's spent most of the morning focusing on a very important topic that has presented itself here at PASB: cyberbullying. Students watched the movie 'Odd Girl Out' and partook in mixed grade group discussions. They also spent time exploring their 'Ecological Footprint' and understanding how the choices they make impact the environment, leading into our next Core Value of focus, Responsible Stewardship.
  • IB/University Planning: The grade 10-12 students partook in various activities related to the IB Program and/or university planning, including: Naviance College Planning sessions, Internal Assessment workshops, ENEM/Vestibular Prep, and preparation for IB exams.

Elementary School News
  • Did you know? The minimum age for membership in WhatsApp is 16. WhatsApp policy states: "In any case, you affirm that you are at least 16 years old as the WhatsApp Service is not intended for children under 16. If you are under 16 years of age, you are not permitted to use the WhatsApp Service". Source: WhatsApp.
  • At PASB, we fully agree with and support the age limitations imposed by WhatsApp. Elementary students have not yet reached the level of maturity to be able to deal with non-face-to-face social interactions effectively.
  • At the Elementary School, cell phones are to be off from 07:45-14:30 unless being used for instructional activities. Children are not allowed to text or make calls during the school day (Handbook, page 16).

Educational Tips and Tools
"Research shows  that teaching kids things like perseverance and self-control can improve their health, academic achievement, and happiness in life.

But teaching character, or social and emotional learning, has proven dicey. The science was  sometimes squishy, the curriculum often felt driven by those trying to set a moral agenda, and schools had too much else to do, like close the academic gap between high- and low-income kids, and the skills gap between  US kids and some of their global counterparts.

That's beginning to change."
