PATH Intl. Community Building Initiative:
Human Brains Seek Communities
community clipartNew brain research, often called Social Neuroscience, is exploring the biological foundations of the ways humans relate to each other and themselves (Rock, 2008). Much of our motivation driving social behavior is governed by the overarching principle of minimizing threat and maximizing reward (Gordon, 2000). We approach situations, things and people that have more certainty and have relatedness as a way of reducing any threats. People naturally form "tribes" or communities to experience a sense of belonging, increasing social rewards.

While all human brains are socially driven, individuals define what they consider "threatening" or "rewarding" based on their beliefs drawn from their unique life experiences. One of the most exciting elements of PATH Intl. communities is that they are going to be driven by the passion and energy of the membership. We've begun working on a procedure manual to help guide and support the processes so that each community can collectively move forward toward their individually defined vision and goals.

The work group exploring PATH Intl. communities is researching the various ways that it can increase the social rewards for PATH Intl. members. One of the work group's goals is to identify services and member benefits that would provide both social networking and in-person opportunities for membership connectivity. The communities will provide a place for like-minded individuals to gather, network, share and engage in important advocacy activities for their respective fields. The communities also provide the PATH Intl. staff and oversight committees the diversity of expertise needed that brings in new members and more members.

We encourage you to begin your own community building by contacting one of the following work group members or PATH Intl. staff members: Chair Tracy Weber, Jen Donahue, Karen Kersting, Shannon Knapp, Kali Welch or Tanya Welsch.

Conference Sessions Offer Variety of Expertise
conference logoYou can see in the 2011 PATH International Conference and Annual Meeting registration book the great session line-up and you can also decide which networking events you would like to attend.

In addition to the fun networking events, the variety and quality-level of sessions being offered is worth the trip alone! For example, Larry Long, the director of Recreation Therapy Service for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, DC, will be the lead speaker for the PATH Intl. Horses for Heroes pre-conference workshop, November 8.

Click here for the digital registration book or here for information on the conference. For information on hotels, airline discounts or the roommate list, visit the conference web page.

Today is the last day for the early-bird registration discount! Register online by September 6 and save $150 off the on-site price. Click here to register.

If you have any further questions about registering for the conference, please contact Karen Province or call her at (800) 369-7433, ext. 111.

Thank You to PATH Intl. Staff Member for 10 Years of Service
Bev ReedIf you have ever called the PATH Intl. office in the last 10 years, you no doubt have heard Bev Reed in member services thanking you for calling and directing your call to the appropriate place. Bev began working for PATH Intl. (formerly NARHA) in August 2001 and more than anyone is the "voice" of PATH Intl., often the only contact someone might have with the international office.

Her good humor and dedication to PATH Intl. are evidenced every day, so much so that on the day of her anniversary surprise party, we had trouble getting her out of the office so the conference room could be decorated.

Other than answering the phones and distributing the mail, Bev enjoys gardening, and the products of her green thumb often grace her desk. She has been married to Gary for 54 years, and has two sons, Michael and Mark, and two grandsons, Collin and Curtis. Her greatest joy is playing with her grandsons "if I have the energy," she says.

If you know Bev and would like to tell her congratulations, click here to email her.

It is to the benefit of PATH Intl. to have people like Bev working with us. Congratulations, Bev, and a big thank you!

PATH Intl. Region 5 Conference in September
Region 5 would like to invite you to attend the PATH Intl. Region 5 conference, September 16-18, at the Calvin Center in Hampton, GA. Look for information to be available soon on the PATH Intl. regional conference page.

"Rein Them In" Member-Get-A-Member Drive

We at PATH Intl. would like to thank everyone for their participation in the "Rein Them In" Member-Get-A-Member Drive. As a result, PATH Intl. members recruited 96 new individual members!

Congratulations to our winners:

Lorie Miller from Region 2 won the spa weekend.

Anthony Busacca from Region 8 won the $100 gift card.

Joyce Scott from Region 9 won the drawing for the free conference registration.

Remember, every time you recruit a new member, you strengthen your membership association. A vital and growing PATH Intl. means greater recognition of safety and ethical practices in the equine-assisted activities and therapies industry, improved education resources and networking opportunities for all members, and the advancement of professional standards worldwide.

Thank you for continuing to make us a strong association!
PATH Intl. Photo Contest Winners

honorable mention The results are in, and the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International is pleased to announce the winners of the 2011 PATH Intl. Photo Contest. (Shown left: one of 5 honorable mentions. To see the full list of winners, click here or on the photo.)

We received over 200 entries in the contest. There were so many good ones that it was difficult to narrow it down! We had to disqualify only a few because the photos did not meet PATH International Standards for Certification and accreditation (e.g., if a helmet didn't fit properly, the photo had to be disqualified). We were pleased at the number of photos that did meet PATH Intl. standards, demonstrating once again that PATH Intl. is a leader in safety standards in the EAAT industry.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to enter. Look forward to these beautiful images and more in upcoming magazines, online, brochures and other marketing materials.

PATH Intl. Center's Vet Recognized by AAEP

As part of its Good Works For Horses Campaign, the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) has named Ron Genovese, VMD, the July honoree for helping therapeutic riding horses at Fieldstone Farm Therapeutic Riding Center, a PATH Intl. Premier Accredited Center in Chagrin Falls, OH, stay on their feet.

Genovese of Cleveland Equine Clinic in Ravenna, Ohio, ensures the health and mobility of more than 30 therapeutic riding horses at Fieldstone Farm. About once a month, ailing horses from the clinic are brought to the clinic for diagnostic work-ups and therapy at reduced prices. Since Genovese began his relationship with the center in 2008, he and his practice have donated more than $13,600 worth of services, medications and surgical and non-surgical procedures.

Exciting Changes to PATH Intl.'s Video Re-submission Process

PATH Intl. is proud to announce a very exciting change to its video resubmission process. PATH Intl. now has the ability to accept video submissions online through a file sharing system. We are still accepting DVDs and VHS tapes, but we strongly encourage all potential instructors who need to re-submit a video to complete their certification process to utilize the new system. International candidates can also use this system to submit videos to PATH Intl. Read more ...
