PCDA WEEKLY UPDATE
This Week
SUMMER IS COMING.......and your economic development office is thinking call trips and upcoming conferences while the rest of you are thinking graduations (make sure to buy your gifts here in town);  And vacations (have you thought about a staycation?); and holidays (Ponca Lake is beautiful in the summer with the playgrounds, frisbee golf courses and the sandy beach.)   This week, PCDA staff attended Weld to Work, Kaw Lake Day at Dorada Foods, talked with inventors, congratulation Gatehands on being the newest business at the Pioneer Technology Center Incubator and wished many mothers Happy Mother's Day.  All of this information and more was shared with the PCDA Board of Trustees at the regularly scheduled Board meeting on Thursday. Other Good news shared included:  The Sykes road project and the Cookshack parking lot projects were accepted; Gatehands presented their high scoring business Pitch and the roof replacement bid for the PCDA hangar will go out for bid in June.  Hooray!  And there was much rejoicing.  Check out our week in pictures below.

THINK ABOUT INTERNSHIPS.....Is your company looking for some summer help around the office? Have a specific project that needs extra hands and brain power but you really don't need a full time employee or even someone for longer than a week or two?  Give Liz Pershing at PoncaWorks a call or e-mail.  There are students wanting to learn from YOU this summer.  Here is your opportunity to possibly recruit your next rock star and give a starving student an opportunity.  Well, they probably aren't starving.

MAKE SURE TO....wish your favorite Mom, Mother, Mother in law, sister daughter, well, you get the idea.  Wish them all a Happy Mother's Day.  And remember to shop early, shop often and shop local for their gifts, cards and flowers.
You shouldn’t focus on why you can’t do something, which is what most people do. You should focus on why perhaps you can, and be one of the exceptions.”

Weld to Work, a competition started by Gary Harvey at MJ&H Fabrications, happened this week.  Like groupies at a rock concert – staff were excited to see the integration of education DIRECTLY to workforce.  This is EXACTLY what we have been needing, and praying and hoping for (wishing and hoping and thinking and praying…) And by golly it was AWESOME (can you tell we are excited?!?!)  Let me back up and explain.  Pioneer Technology Center, our career tech created to meet the education needs of industry in our area, has been Gary Harvey's second home as he has hired over 50% of his workforce from students; and the reason is,  he shows up in that welding classroom weekly.  He watches the students, guides them, works with the instructor on the curriculum and then plucks the best ones for his staffing needs.   This is a career that makes about $12-$15 starting out, and the experienced welders can make $22-$28/hr in most shops.  If’ you’re willing to travel after you get that experience, welders can make upwards of $40-$60/hr.  Doesn’t sound like a bad way to start your career, does it?  To create more of a buzz about the jobs available, Gary created a competition for the PTC welding students, in which the top three are guaranteed jobs. Congratulations to the Weld for Work winners. 1st Place Jonathan Ruiz-Lopez, Ponca City; 2nd Place Lane Ramsey, Newkirk and 3rd Place Ross Flood, PO HI Senior.  And thank you to Gary Harvey for being a champion in industry for the connection to education.
