The Light & The Stars
During the Holiday Season everyone wants their traditional parties, events and dinners to go perfectly. We want the Holidays to be full of light and fun, which they are. They are when we let go of how things are supposed to be and allow them to flow as the moment intends. You may have a Holiday dinner where Grandma decides to pull out her dentures by your new boyfriend and you are mortified, or Christmas morning when Santa forgot to bring the stockings to their traditional place leaving the kids questioning. These are the moments when you reach from within to find a smile and laugh and find the light in the situation. They are the moments in future years that become the star memories of the Holidays. The same goes for every action in health and fitness. Right now I am in the midst of recovering from double knee surgery. Many Personal Trainers don't do the orthroscopic surgeries for fear of the unknown, but how can I be a positive example for my own clients if I don't take care of myself. That is not setting a good example, nor is it getting over my own fears. While some people have asked, "How can you do this?", or "What are you going to do to get all the holiday shopping done?", or "Are you nervous if it doesn't work and you're a trainer and can't workout as hard after?". Of course they are questions that popped through my mind but honestly, this has been an experience I have tried to find positives and "stars" within. The workouts prior to my surgery were intense, focused, and disciplined. When teaching and training, I relished each class and watching how my Power Fitness PDX'ers were strong and moving forward with their goals. While organizing for the Holidays and shopping, I mapped out what we were doing and specific dates to go to the Nutcracker, Ice Skating, Night Bike Riding, and stocking shopping with efficiency and focus versus last minute stressful events. I also realized that the recovery time would be a gift I don't normally have. Time to sit-really sit with my legs up, enjoy the Christmas Tree and twinkling lights with my girls, and have no feelings of having to be anywhere. We've had jammies on until 10:30 while painting pictures for family. I've accepted help and the gift that it is- the gift of family and friends trying to make this time light and worry free for me and my family. I have given up control of needing to plan the logistics and allowed others to take over; which is not the norm. Those are the huge stars in this journey. When facing challenges, look at the plethora of little lights along the way that become big stars in the end. Think about your exercise goals and how they can seem daunting. But you break them down, separate out each step and realize they are attainable. These little steps along the way become the biggest stars of goals conquered in the end. I have seen this with all of you in Power Fitness PDX, and have been honored to be part of your journey. During this special time of the year, I wish for you to truly appreciate the little lights that may seem like only twinkles of possibilities. Relish them as they become the stars that shine brightly. In this News Update you'll read about some Power Fitness PDX'ers and how they grew this past year. They allowed themselves to break through their fears, and tap into their inner light to become their own biggest star. You can too in 2012...just believe. You are all the biggest stars with the brightest lights within. Have a healthy, joyous and wonderful Holiday Season. Cheers to you...

Jeanne Kettles- One Year of Inspiration -
Jeanne's Determination & Focus Will Blow YOU Away
January 2011 Jeanne made a phone call, one that changed her life
 | Jeanne NYE 2010 |
This time last year I was floundering ... big time! I was burned out: Overwhelmed, overweight, under a tremendous amount of stress, and feeling totally depleted. After three years of a challenging Masters program followed suddenly and unexpectedly by three years of a nasty divorce which left me totally broke and completely on my own as a single mother with no job, I felt "washed up" on some strange shore as the divorce became final and I landed a wonderful but demanding full time job. I had been "coping" with years of stress by self-medicating with all the wrong food and drinking, staying up late "too tired to work out", forgetting about myself and throwing everything into caring for my children and the and the demands of life. I wanted things to change, and I realized the only way they could would be to change the course I was on - but how?

I saw a postcard for Power Fitness PDX which boldly affirmed, "
YOU have the power, strength and courage to make your life the best yet. Without even realizing it, you possess incredible determination and dedication to be your most active self possible...you just need a little nudge, education, and support". It's like Erin was talking directly to me. I went on line and read about the women's only boot camp and Erin's philosophy. I remember my first conversation with Erin: it was remarkably easy to talk with her about my fears and reservations "would everyone be more advanced than me? - I'm really out of shape" She encouraged me by letting me know that although everyone might seem at different fitness levels that everyone had their challenges and that was the point - we would come together as a group to challenge ourselves - together. I made the commitment to do the fitness challenge - a three month intensive diet and exercise boot camp. I never imagined how it would change my life.

Tasty & Healthy Options for Parties
We all want food to taste good, especially at parties. Try these recipes for both nutrient rich food, celebration appetizers, and quick recipes.
Clean Eating is the best way to nosh every day. But during the holidays it may seem daunting to eat clean at a party...but it doesn't have to be. Bring your favorite healthy appetizer which allows you to enjoy food knowing it is tasty and good for you!
Festive Hummus:
1 TB pesto
1 TB sunflower seeds
1/2 TB lemon pepper
1/2 TB curry powder
1/4 TB red pepper flakes
1/8 TB nutmeg
1/8 cup feta cheese
Mix ingredients together in a bowl. Add in hummus and stir so there aren't any lumps. Put in a bowl and serve with sliced bell peppers, celery, cucumber, edamame, and carrots. Serve hummus in lowball glasses with sliced veggies standing inside. Prefect for individual cup servings.
Snazzy Spinach Salad:
1 cup quinoa
1 bag of cleaned organic baby spinach
1 can garbanzo beans drained
1 cup shredded carrots
3/4 cup dried cranberries
1 pint cherry tomatoes
1/8 cup pumpkin seeds/sunflower seeds/sliced almonds
1/2 TB curry powder
1/2 TB pepper (or lemon pepper)
Make quinoa and put aside. Mix all ingredients together in salad bowl and gradually add in quinoa. Dress with Trader Joes Reduced Fat Cilantro Ginger dressing, or light Goddess/Soyaki dressing is good too. Serve in festive little bowls with forks.

Friendly reminder...challenge yourself & REACH your goals
Boot Camper, Gemma, wrote an incredible note about how Power Fitness PDX has changed her life. Take a minute to read her experience. How do you envision PFPDX changing your year? **Gemma is 3rd from left**Erin, This note has long been overdue! I hope that you know how much I APPRECIATE you. I have not expressed my appreciation in so many words and ways, but I am so thankful that I met you. I have indeed come a long way from the first day I came in to try out your early morning boot camp class (thank you Karen for pestering me incessantly that I must meet Erin!) armed with nerves (the trepidation of "going to boot camp") and vertigo! You kicked my butt on the first day and I have been hooked since! It has been almost a year since I joined PowerfitnessPDX and I see all the positive changes in myself both physically, emotionally and mentally. Who knew that I could do over 20 military push ups - in proper form! READ MORE & 2012 IS YOURS |
8 Tips to Survive the Holiday Craziness & Celebrations
You can do it! You can get through the holiday season stronger, healthier and determined to start the New Year right. All you have to do is focus on the 8 Holiday tips each week, exercise, and talk positive to yourself. In addition to the goals, try to incorporate 2-3 additional 20 minute cardio blasts to your week. It could be mall walking while holiday shopping, riding your bike to get the holiday party's groceries, or jogging to and from Power Fitness PDX instead of driving. Tip 1: Drink 10 8-oz. cups of water per day. If you can do this, it will help you feel cleansed, fuller, and content.
Tip 2: Eat a small meal every 2-3 hours and try to have a small meal before going to a holiday party. Print up the Clean Eating list and bring it to the grocery store. Nutritious rich foods help balance the celebrations. You will arrive to the party satisfied, and not eager to eat the entire platter of mini quiche.
