ROYAL COLWOOD WINS TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS

The Royal Colwood Golf Club team of Head Professional Jason Giesbrecht and Club Champion Kevin Carrigan shot a -9 total of 63 to win the TaylorMade & adidas Golf Tournament of Champions presented by Richport Ford on Monday at the University Golf Club.

 

Giesbrecht, left, and Carrigan, right, fired a blistering -6 front 9 score of 30, which included 4 birdies and an eagle at the fifth.

 

The duo would make their only bogey on the 10th hole, but another two birdies and an eagle at the 13th meant a back 9 score of 33 and final score of 63, two better than the Richmond Country Club duo of Head Professional Mark Strong and amateur Dave Gazley and the Victoria Golf Club team of Head Professional Lindsay Bernakevitch and amateur Craig Doell, who each shot scores of 65. First prize money was $1,200 while the tie for second resulted in $775 runner-up cheques.

A final reminder that the annual Application deadline for prospective members to join the PGA of Canada in 2014 closes on Sunday June 1st.

British Columbia boosts one of the most comprehensive Playing Ability Test schedules, with 19 opportunities for men and women throughout the province.

All interested individuals are encouraged to visit the PGA of Canada's application website to review all details of the application process by clicking here.

ASSISTANTS' & SENIORS' CHAMPIONSHIP JUNE 2-3

The final countdown is on to the Flightscope/COBRA PUMA Golf PGA of BC Assistants' Championship and the PGA of BC Seniors' Championship at Rivershore Golf Links in Kamloops on June 2-3.

It's a wide open field in the Assistant's Championship, as the last two champions, Summerland Golf & Country Club's Greg Machtaler (2013) and Chilliwack Golf Club's Brad Clapp (2012) will not be in the field as they will be competing at PGA Tour Canada's event.

For the Seniors' Championship, players must be a member in good standing, 50 years of age or older at the time of the event. The defending champion is Seymour Golf & Country Club's Roy Abbenbroek. There is also a Super Senior's division for all players 60 years of age or older at the time of event.

PGA OF BC AWARDS NOMINATIONS OPENING SOON
The PGA of BC Awards Reception is all set for Wednesday, October 15th at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond, BC but in order to determine this year's recipients, awards nominations must take place.

Derek Thornley and the Awards Committee have been working hard on making this year's event the best ever and that means participation from PGA of BC members.

Now's the time to start thinking about who you would like to nominate for these awards: Golf Professional of the Year; Apprentice Professional of the Year; Junior Golf Leader of the Year; Sales Representative of the Year; Golf Shop of the Year; Teacher of the Year; Golf Facility of the Year; Coach of the Year; and the Professional Development Award. There will be four regional nominees per award, with the provincial recipient being announced at the October 15th Awards Reception.

Other awards to be given out that night include Player of the Year; Member of the Year; Patron of the Year; the $1,000 Jim Gibson Scholarship; and the $1,000 Forestar Golf Community Leadership Bursary.

Amendments to the Awards nomination and voting process is set to change for 2014, with details to be announced in the near future.

PGA OF BC MEMBERS PLAYING PC FINANCIAL OPEN THIS WEEK
Good luck to the handful of PGA of BC members who will be teeing it up at Point Grey Golf & Country Club May 29 to June 1 for the PC Financial Open, the first event in the 2014 PGA Tour Canada schedule.

Summerland Golf & Country Club's Greg Machtaler and Chilliwack Golf Club's Brad Clapp earned their way into the field by passing PGA Tour Canada Q-School at Crown Isle earlier this month while Olympic View Golf Club's Kevin Maxwell and Seymour Creek Golf Centre's Bryn Parry received sponsor's exemptions into the 156-man field.

Maxwell and Parry will start on the first tee Thursday and then the 11th tee on Friday, with Maxwell playing at 9:15 a.m. the first day and 2:40 p.m. Friday. Parry starts at 2:25 p.m. Thursday and 9:30 a.m. Friday.

Machtaler and Clapp play the other side of the draw, starting on 11 at 7:40 a.m. and 8:20 a.m. respectively Thursday and then at 1 at 12:35 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. respectively on Friday.

PGA OF BC CHAMPIONSHIP REGISTRATION
The 2014 Titleist/FootJoy PGA of BC Championship Presented by Axis Insurance Managers is already Titleist FootJoy logolooking to be a very popular event to be held August 25-26 at Point Grey Golf & Country Club.

With afternoon tee times on both days, starting at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, August 25 and 1 p.m. on Tuesday, August 26, there will be a limited field so please register now to ensure your spot in the marquee event on the PGA of BC event calendar.

As a reminder, this event is also the only qualifier used to determine the British Columbia representatives for the 2014 PGA Club Professional Championship of Canada in Arizona, November 16-19.

2014 SANI MARC CANADA CUP INFO
The Sani Marc Canada Cup is scheduled for the week of July 28 to August 3 and is one of the most popular events for PGA of BC members to attend.
 
With a $175,000 purse, of which $30,000 goes to the winner, the Sani Marc Canada Cup fills up fast. The number of spots awarded to each zone is limited, with the PGA of BC receiving 18 spots.

As a reminder, the PGA of BC's allocations will be based on the following qualifications by priority:
  1. Players who made the cut at 2013 Canada Cup
  2. Players in the Top 20 on the 2013 PGA of BC Order of Merit (in order by placing) 
  3. First Come, First Served Registration

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO BUILD JUNIOR CLUBS - JUNE 9 & 10
In preparation for Canucks Junior Golf Week July 2-9, the PGA of BC is looking for volunteers to assist in building junior clubs on Monday, June 9 and Tuesday June 10 in the Vancouver area.

Volunteers will be honoured with PDP points (one point per hour). Details on the session are still being finalized and all interested members are asked to contact Executive Director Donald Miyazaki at 604-303-6766 or via email donald@pgabc.org

CONGRATULATIONS
The PGA of BC would like to welcome Luke Bogdan (Ledgeview Golf & Country Club) as a new Candidate for Membership with our Association.

Luke braved the rain at PGA Tour Canada Qualifying School at Crown Isle in early May and received an Exemption from the Playing Ability Test for his scores.

We wish Luke the very best as a Golf Professional and look forward to seeing him at future Association events. Derek is now eligible to play in local Srixon Lower Mainland Pro Tour events, along with applicable PGA of BC Championships. He is already registered to play at the Assistants' Championship at Rivershore next week.
