STARS Diatom Project
There is a new mural hanging on the walls of our High School. The Diatom Mural Installation is the result of a five-month artist residency and collaboration between visiting artist and parent of a PHA alum, Julie Peck, PHA art teacher Doug Anderson, and his level 3 art class. The project brings together both the arts and sciences, utilizing a range of ceramic techniques including carving, "sgraffito," sculpted relief, and mosaic, to depict diatoms, single-cell algae with beautifully complex geometries. The project was funded by a Massachusetts Cultural Council STARS Residency grant. Click here to see pictures of the Diatom Mural Installation created by PHA 9th & 10th grade Level 3 art students.

Costa Rica
Through a partnership with Global Leadership Adventures , students traveled to Rancho Quemado, a small settlement in the remote Osa Peninsula. Students aided the community with refurbishment projects that helped build a sustainable eco-tourism industry. Community projects in Rancho Quemado included inventorying and monitoring animals and their habitats, review of flora, and building speed bumps near the local school. Check out this awesome video chronicling the adventure.
Guatemala
This long-standing Junior Journey program integrated Spanish language instruction, cultural immersion, and community service learning. The program combined four hours of daily one-on-one Spanish language instruction, home stays with local families, and community service learning. Click here to check out the blog posts by Junior Journey students who went to Guatemala where students shared thoughtful reflection on their experiences , "My trip here has been amazing thus far. The land, people and atmosphere are so inviting! This trip has opened my eyes to the world and has removed me a little more from my sheltered lifestyle in Boston." -- SHARMY ERTILIEN - 6/15/18
New Orleans
Though it has been many years since Hurricane Katrina devastated the city of New Orleans, recovery efforts are still underway. In partnership with Rustic Pathways , students were an active part in the recovery effort, helping to rebuild homes that were destroyed by natural disaster. Students experienced the rich and exciting culture of "The Big Easy" through music, language, and of course food.
Vermont
During this outdoor leadership focused trip, students were exposed the beauty and tranquility of the Green Mountain State. Over the course of the week, students camped, hiked, and kayaked in the Vermont wilderness. In addition to fun outdoor activities, students participated in local community service projects.
