What is Critical Opportunities? This interactive session calls on presenters to identify public health problems that could be solved or lessened through law. Presenters have 5 minutes to pitch their idea to the audience and a panel of three public health law experts: Dr. Mel Kohn,Oregon's State Health Officer, Dr. Martin Fenstersheib, Santa Clara County (Calif.) Health Officer, and CDC Deputy Director Dr. Judith A. Monroe.

What's the goal? This session will produce innovative ideas to solve public health problems and spark discussion on the use of law to improve public health.

Do you have an idea to present? Here's how to get involved:

Recent Research Results
Improving State Health Policy Assessment: An Agenda for Measurement and Analysis
PHLR grantees James Macinko, PhD, and Diana Silver, PhD, MPH, of NYU have published their article, "Improving State Health Policy Assessment: An Agenda for Measurement and Analysis" in the American Journal of Public Health.

The paper responds to interest among policymakers and advocates in understanding the ways policy tools can be used to improve population health within and across health areas. The researchers argue that assessing public health policies within and across health domains is necessary for measuring the effectiveness of any individual health policy or law.

The authors develop the concepts of "interdomain" and "intradomain" policy comprehensiveness and show how these concepts can be used to better monitor the current health policy environment, improve the ways new policy is adopted, and enhance evaluations of the impact of policy on health.

Strategic & Targeted Research Program
Suggestions needed for areas in critical need of research

The PHLR Strategic and Targeted Research Program was created to fill critical gaps in the public health law evidence base. In the next year, we will commission research on high priority topics. Currently, we are gathering suggestions of pressing research questions the field needs answered.

All interested individuals are welcome to make submissions. This is not a request for formal research proposals. We welcome ideas that demonstrate their importance through two key characteristics:
  1. Value to Public Health: The law or legal practice to be studied has the potential to significantly improve health outcomes.
  2. Relevance to Policy or Practice: The study data will be valuable to policy-makers or practitioners when it is delivered.

Make your suggestion today using the online form!
