DON'T STOP BELIEVING AUCTION
BRINGS OUT THE 1980s IN EVERYONE!

This year's POPCS auction gala theme, "Don't Stop Believing!," celebrated our school's founding in 1980 and 35 years of academic excellence! More than 400 members of the POPCS community attended the premier fundraising event of our school year.

The evening got underway at the Marriott at Legacy Town Center, with a silent auction of over 250 items, donated by friends and families of POPCS!  Dinner was served and the live auction began with incredible once-in-a-lifetime auction packages.  POPCS alumnus, Jessica Shadley Miles addressed the crowd to thank them for all they have done and continue to do for our school.  She shared how much her school years at POPCS personally meant to her and how our school prepared her for adulthood.  The lively entertainment for the evening was the popular 80s cover band, The Spazmatics.  Their 80s vibe and showmanship got lots of people on the dance floor reliving earlier days!

The annual POPCS auction gala was beautifully chaired by Mary Angle,
Michelle Mykeloff, Jane Nolan, and Robin Riddle.  Even with raining sleet and snow the POPCS community wouldn't be discouraged - they were ready to celebrate our school!

The final tally of monies raised will be coming soon!

This year's raffle winners included the Tseng and LaGassa families. The Tseng family won a FIAT 500L and the LaGassa family won $10,000 in tuition credit.

Special a very special POPCS thanks goes to our generous auction sponsors for making the evening possible:

"to life" (l'Chaim) - one of the longest running and most celebrated Broadway musical productions of all time, Fiddler On The Roof!

Set in the little village of Anatevka, Russia, Fiddler On The Roof centers on Tevye, a poor dairyman, and his five daughters.  With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and instill them with traditional values in the face of a changing world.  Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler On The Roof's universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality, and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy, and sadness.

TPSMEA Solo / Ensemble Festival

On Saturday, March 7, 36 of our Prince of Peace band students, from Grades 5 through 12, participated in the annual TPSMEA solo/ensemble festival at Greenhill School. Of those 36, 29 students earned First Division ratings on UIL/PML (University Interscholastic league Prescribed Music List)  level I,II, and III rated pieces. (I is the most difficult).

Of those 29, three students, Matthew Lang, Elijah Taylor and Suraj Janakiraman earned First Division ratings on Class I pieces which enables them to participate in the State solo/ensemble festival in May. Eight students earned first division ratings on non-UIL/PML pieces.

Congratulations to all who worked hard to earn First Division Ratings on the most difficult material (Class I) and to all who participated in the festival this year.

Nurturing the Nest: POP Parent Column

Blessings in the Rain...

by Megan Krizan

We had a very interesting and adventurous start to our day one cold and drizzly morning this February.  We were on our way to school when we suddenly found ourselves sitting in the shoulder of the George Bush Turnpike with a flat tire.  Not fun!  Surprisingly enough we were back on our way within 30 minutes and we only had to stand in the rain for ten of those.  As we were on our way again I made the statement, "Well, that wasn't so bad."  My youngest immediately responded with, "What do you mean, Mom?! That was HORRIBLE!"

Ah, that's my girl.  She is a bright and bubbly thing, but she also has a flair for the dramatic and a tendency to focus on the negative.  Part of it is her personality, but I want to help her learn that how you think makes a big difference in how you feel.  It means the difference between having a HORRIBLE morning that leads to a BAD day, or having a bit of a challenging start that also had many hidden blessings in it.  So I took that moment to model some optimism.

First, I acknowledged how she was feeling: "Yes, baby, that was not fun, and I wish it hadn't happened."  Then I moved into showing her the good things that happened to us even in the challenge: "But you know what, I noticed that God was looking out for us today.  Let's say a quick prayer to thank Him.  Lord, thank you for sending us that gentleman who took the risk to drive in the shoulder to tell us we had a problem so our tire didn't blow out.  Thank you for giving us a nice big piece of shoulder to pull on to so we were safe even in the traffic.  Thank you for sending the Tollway Authority person so quickly and with all of the tools needed to help us so fast.  Thank you, Lord, for looking out for us, even in the rain."

There are a few very important things to remember when doing this, so as not to have it backfire on you.  Remember, I am talking about MODELING optimism.  It is about showing your children how you handle the difficult situations that happen to you, NOT about telling them how to look at the bright side of something bad that has happened to them.   In those situations, it is most important to start with lots of empathy, and little advice, or you run the risk of being insensitive and shutting down their willingness to share.  (It's like telling a stage 2 cancer patient that at least it is not stage 3.  They may be thinking that, but they don't need to hear it from you.  Not cool.)  Hopefully, once they feel understood they will start to look for the blessings on their own, and that is much more likely to happen if you have been regularly modeling it for them.

There will be times in your life when it is going to be really, really hard to find anything positive to model for your children.  That moment came for me 2 years ago when that youngest daughter of mine was in the hospital with a new diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes.  There were some days early on in the diagnosis that seemed like there were no blessings left to find.  In those moments I could still show that I knew God was with us and that I would trust Him to see us through.  In that moment, I was able to realize that there was at least one blessing left after all.

So you see, it is really important for us to show our children that we can find blessings, even when things are hard.  Not only is it good for them, but it is good for our outlook, too!  My youngest still tends to jump to the worst, but I'm hoping that over time she will start to step back and try to see things from a new perspective.  So even though some rain showers in life cannot be avoided, maybe she will see that without them there would be no rainbows (and, that in the meantime, God has packed her an umbrella!)

    Curt's Corner
WHAT'S GOOD ABOUT GOOD  FRIDAY ?

By Curt Riske,
POPCS School Life Chaplain

"For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance;that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures".   1 Corinthians 15:3

On  April 3 , the world, and especially Christians, will observe "Good  Friday ", which marks the dramatic culmination of God's plan to save His people from their sins.  Is this just another day-a day off from school-or is it really a special day?  If indeed it is a special day, what will you and I do to celebrate this specialness?  Why is it called "Good  Friday " when such atrocious events happened on this day?  Maybe the Germans are correct calling it "Karlfreitag", which means "sorrowful  Friday ". Some would say we should call it "God's  Friday ".  It's all of these and more.

It all started in the Garden of Eden when man disobeyed his maker, and God-the just and the justifier-promised a savior from sin.  At God's perfect time, Jesus came to this earth with the full knowledge that His mission here was to suffer and die for our sins.  Even when His disciples tried to persuade Him not to go to Jerusalem and when they later deserted Him, Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit, remained steadfast and faithful to His mission.  On the cross, knowing that His mission was complete, He said, "It is finished", bowed His head and released His spirit.

"Good  Friday " is good because it is the basis of our faith.

"Good  Friday " is good because we could not save ourselves but He loved us so much that He could not imagine losing us.

"Good  Friday " is good because it is a mirror in which we can see ourselves in our sinful reality and turn to Christ on the cross as He proclaims, "Father forgive them".

"Good  Friday " is the "why" behind the celebration of Easter and our Easter victory today and everyday.

On "Good  Friday ", we see in the cross, a love so amazing, so divine that it loves us even when we deny it, turn away and ignore it, take it for granted or even despise it.

As we approach Good  Friday , may we be led to realize how great the Father's love is for us, how desperately we need His love and forgiveness and to be empowered  to respond, "Thousand, Thousand, Thanks shall be, Dearest Jesus unto Thee."

March Volunteers of the Month!

Michelle Mykeloff and Mary Angle

------------------

Michelle Mykeloff

As a family new to Texas and to Prince of Peace Christian School last year, it has been an absolute pleasure and blessing to be part of a community that is so welcoming and open to new volunteers and to new students.  I have felt so welcomed in my volunteer roles for the high school, coordinating the HS Teacher Appreciation "Souper Bowl" lunch, assisting with class fundraising, assisting with Pink Out and the volleyball banquet, and decorating for High School dances.  In my first year, I jumped into auction as the Item Management Coordinator, and I enjoyed it so much, I couldn't resist co-chairing this year with a fabulous group of volunteers. I love volunteering for Auction and getting to know parents from all grade levels.

Mary Angle

I'm honored to be recognized as "Volunteer of the Month."  I began volunteering on the first day mydaughter, Darby, entered Mrs. Warneke's first grade class - that was 10 years ago!

Volunteer of the Month, Mary Angle's daughter and POPCS student, Darby Angle

My favorite spot over the past 10 years has been working the auction.  I tried my hand in several committees but the silent auction has been a perfect fit for me!  You know me as the "basket lady!"   This year I had the pleasure of being a co-chair of the auction along with Jane Nolan and Michelle Mylekoff.  I have enjoyed seeing the success of the auction and what it provides our children.

My wish is for many more successful years of growth for POPCS and lots of wonderful and

happy school volunteers!

April Volunteers of the Month!

Monica Pritchett and Jody Sartin

--------------

Monica Pritchett

Monica enjoys supporting our great school with the gifts God has given her. This year she coordinated North Texas Giving Day for POPCS and loved watching families get so excited about giving back to the school.  She also helped host  Grandparents Day, something she does every year,  because  it is so much fun sharing the campus with our favorite visitors.  She has also worked on the school auction for 7 years, starting with the online auction and recently focusing on procurement and gift gathering.  Being a PTF representative for her children's classrooms has been very rewarding and she is grateful for the many friends made through volunteering.   In addition, she has served on the school board for the last 3 years.    She is married to Les and they have three daughters at POPCS - Grace (4th), Kate (3rd) and Claire (K) .  They have been part of the POPCS community  since Grace started  in the 3 year old preschool program.

Jody Sartin

The Sartins have been at POPCS for 4 1/2 years. Dean (5) is currently in Kindergarten with Ava (2) in the ELC-2's class. Jody has been involved at the class level - both as a PTF class representative, as well as the PTF Grade Level Coordinator for the past three years. In addition to this, she was the PTF cookie coordinator last year as well as the co-cordinator for Muffins with Mom and Donuts with Dad. This year she has continued as Grade Level Coordinator and jumped into Auction with Item Management. She's often found at the school pitching in wherever needed. The Sartin's love attending POPCS and are grateful for the friendships that they have founded since entering the school!
