Jules' Gems - Feeling LUCKY!

Schedules have been WILD these days! Prepping for a presentation on Social Media Marketing at the PIA President's Conference & keeping up with our amazing staff. As a matter of fact, the PPI team continues to grow! Who you ask?? His initials - M.H. (Scroll down to find out).

A HUGE thank you to PPI Member and industry supporters Larry & Melissa Coffman for publishing an op-ed in Marketing News about our near future needs for employees so Print stays ALIVE in PPI-Land. Check it out HERE

A couple of Seattle-area friends have been spending time sharing career opportunities in visual communications with high school and college students. Last week Dave Weber (Highline College) and I encouraged students to persue careers in print during two Viz-Comm class periods. Randy Coplen ("retired") is stepping up with his Chamber connections to help expand our career day calendar and jump start some mentoring programs for the industry. He has joined us in the past and is gathering others for future career fairs and student tours. Their passion is infectious! Join Us!
Dirty Jobs w/Mike Rowe has been vocal about the need for apprenticeships and programs to recruit, train for careers in trade. One issue he addresses in this short video is how blue collar workers are portrayed in film and television. We're hoping to overcome these misconceptions by showing people who produce print are creative, smart individuals who enjoy the challenges that come with custom manufacturing. Color, substrates, variable data... whats not to like?! Inspired yet??

We can't just depend on luck. Let's do this!
Cheers - jules

Under 40: Chris Pike, Wright Business Graphics

PPI Member, Wright Business Graphics, was highlighted in Print + Promo Magazine for their project manager, Chris Pike. Take a look into the future of the printing industry:

A newspaper editor walks into a bar ... No, this isn't the introduction to a joke, but rather, how a creative writing major ends up in the printing industry. Just ask Chris Pike, project manager for Wright Business Graphics. After completing his studies at Texas State University, Pike worked as a bartender for roughly two years. One of his regular customers turned out to be the managing editor of the local paper. The editor learned that Pike liked to draw cartoons on the side, so he gave him the chance to draw a few in a professional capacity. "To be honest, he'd had more than a few drinks by then, and I wasn't sure if he'd remember our conversation, but, nonetheless, I took some cartoons in to show him the next day, and he hired me on the spot," Pike said. A couple of months in, the production manager left to start his own newspaper, so Pike gave the job a try. While his duties mostly included pagination and prepress, he liked it enough to make the move to Portland with his fiancée and begin his career with Wright Business Graphics.
