December 2015 Newsletter I always enjoy the arrival of the first day of winter because it also means daylight again starts increasing. Here in the Northwest, the phenomenon is quite pronounced as we gain up to 3.5 minutes of daylight a day until summer when we experience more than 16 hours a day!
With the holiday season upon us, Pacific Rim College students will be on break from December 22nd until January 3rd, which means our Student Clinic will also be closed. We will begin taking appointments on January 2nd for the new semester, which will offer more clinic shifts than ever, including Saturdays!
Our campus will be open during the break, excluding December 24th through 27th and January 1st, and thus can fulfill your last minute gift book shopping at our bookstore. Speaking of gifts, don't forget about opportunities to give back to your community. The impact your compassion can have on others can be immeasurable. Thanks for caring and enjoy the newsletter! Fighting to Save the Trees
The Walbran Valley on southern Vancouver Island is again the site of heated logging protests. In the early 90s activists gathered in the valley to protest logging of old growth trees, some of which are giants more than 1000 years old. After gaining international attention, the provincial government yielded and created the Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park. The Park boundaries, however, failed to protect some of the largest trees including 'Castle Giant', an enormous red cedar with a diameter more than 16 feet. Logging company Teal Jones is planning to log and outcry from the public is probably the only thing that will convince the government to stop them. Take action now by supporting some of the many groups involved in the battle to save the Walbran Valley: Wilderness Committee, Friends of Carmanah/Walbran, and Ancient Forest Alliance.
