ARTICLE HEADING
"I practiced my cello under a canopy of green leaves and blue sky in Powell River, breathing in that crisp, fresh air, channeling that energy through my body to the tip of my bow ... ... I realized nothing mattered aside from the music."

-Clara Tsang, Hong Kong, 2012 Student
In This Issue
Hi there!

Welcome to the first edition of the PRISMA newsletter! I'm Sarah, a PRISMA volunteer and an aspiring journalist. I'll be writing a number of newsletters that you will receive periodically throughout the spring and summer to keep you informed and updated about PRISMA. Each edition will include bios from the stellar guest artists, information regarding ticket sales, volunteer opportunities and links to our website.

PRISMA is an opportunity for enthusiastic young musicians to prepare for a potential position in a professional orchestra. When the Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific was discontinued in 2012, PRISMA was established to keep a symphony program in Powell River. By supporting PRISMA, you are making an important contribution to the cultural abundance of our region as well as the promising futures of young musicians.

PRISMA's goal is to offer a distinguished musical experience to the audiences and students who participate, while contributing to the economy and cultivation of arts in Powell River.

The vision of PRISMA? To be a premier North American summer music school, attracting students and patrons to the cultural destination of Powell River.

Read on to discover what PRISMA has to offer and how you can help with its efforts to be the best it can be!

GUEST ARTIST BIOS:
Soyoung Yoon - violin
Soyoung Yoon
Recognized as one of the most outstanding young violinists, Soyoung Yoon will be a guest artist for both weeks of PRISMA. Yoon studied at the National University of the Arts with Kim Nam-Yun in South Korea as well as with Zakhar Bron at the Musikhochschule Cologne and Zurich. She is also a prizewinner at each of the four best violin competitions worldwide. Of these, she won first prize at the International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition in 2011.

Yoon won her first competition at the 2002 Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition at the age of seventeen.

She performs as a soloist with orchestras all over the world.
Yoon plays a violin from J. B. Guadagnini (ex-Bckeburg, 1773).

Yoon will be performing as a soloist during PRISMA at the Symphony Cruise and Symphony Orchestra concerts on June 22. She will also be leading a violin Masterclass on June 25 in addition to sectional rehearsals and private lessons throughout the program to prepare violin students for their performances.

Marcus Goddard
Both a performer and a composer, Marcus Goddard has been seen extensively throughout North America and Europe. One of his compositions was commissioned by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra for which he plays as an Associate Principal Trumpet. He has had three other orchestral works performed during the last several years. Alexander Varty of the Georgia Straight wrote in his review of Marcus' chamber ensemble that "Marcus Goddard's Voices Rising was just beautiful."

Goddard received a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Michigan under Armando Ghitalla and Charles Daval and earned a Master's from Indiana University as a pupil of John Rommel.

Of his catalog of over thirty-five works, Goddard has pieces for large orchestra, chamber ensemble, large brass ensemble and duos and trios. He has even composed and produced a score for the film Breakfast at Sharkey's. Goddard also composed two modern dance works staged in Indiana.

Goddard will be performing at PRISMA in the Faculty Chamber Music Concerts on June 21 and 26 and will hold sectional rehearsals and private lessons for trumpet students.
