Jasper Avenue and 109 Street turn lane reopens
August 30, 2017

A portion of the eastbound right turn lane from Jasper Avenue onto 109 Street southbound has been reopened to traffic, starting today. The lane will allow for approximately four to five cars to queue for the turn. A smaller curb extension, marked with yellow bollards, will remain to slow down vehicles making the turn and retain the overall design concept, including visibility of pedestrians.

The lane had been closed in early July and incorporated into the Experience Jasper Avenue Design Demonstration currently happening along the avenue from 1 09 Street to 115 Street. This installation is scheduled to be in place from July to October, weather permitting . Preliminary traffic data on the project has indicated a minimal delay. The decision to reopen the lane was due to an anticipated influx of vehicles expected in September when school resumes and in response to feedback on the design from Edmontonians.

The Experience Jasper Avenue Design Demonstration is focused on letting people try out the design changes prior to construction in 2019. Designated as Edmonton’s premier Main Street , reconstruction on Jasper Avenue will be from 109 - 124 Street. As such, the design plan has a pedestrian priority, while still balancing the needs of all other travel modes.
