Dear supporter,
The Providence Student Union is officially on the web, and I wanted to take this opportunity - in our first ever PSU email - to introduce our organization and invite you to join our online community.

As you'll see, there's a lot going on at PSU. That's why I am so excited to have this chance to share the voices of our student leaders and keep you in the loop about our different campaigns in the coming months.
Lastly, I want to thank you for your previous involvement in our organization - with your support, I know we will continue to successfully build student power in Providence through youth-led organizing.
Sincerely,
Aaron Regunberg Executive Director |
Student Juries at Hope High
PSU's original chapter, Hope United, has been organizing to bring student voice to school discipline, and is currently working to implement a "student jury" at Hope High School that will allow students to replace exclusionary punishments like suspension and expulsion with restorative practices. Check out the recent GoLocalProv article asking if Hope United's work could be a solution to Providence's suspension problem!

Physics at Alvarez High School
Students in Alvarez United have been working to get a permanent physics teacher at their school, which has lacked full science staffing for nearly three years. Students successfully got front-page coverage of their campaign in the Providence Journal, and thanks to this public attention, Alvarez will be hiring a full-time teacher by the end of the month.

PSU Fights High-Stakes Testing
|
Rhode Island is implementing a new high-stakes testing graduation requirement. PSU's members argue this requirement does nothing to improve our schools, denies countless students access to a diploma, and only intensifies the corrosive effects of standardized testing in every Rhode Island classroom.
The Providence Student Union is at the forefront of the campaign to fight this misguided and harmful policy, and we will be escalating our recent advocacy with continued direct action organizing in the near future. Click here to learn more about why this is such an important issue to us, or RSVP to our next public action, a press conference at 3:45 on Jan. 30th at the State House calling on the Governor to roll back this harmful policy!
