What's Up with PSWIFT!!
President's Message
Dear Members,
I don't know about you, but I'm melting!   It feels like AUGUST!  Hopefully the worst of the heat is over,.... a girl can dream!  Be sure to stay cool and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
Speaking of dreaming...this is the time to relax a little, dust off those creative projects you've been working on - and see what comes to mind.........
We're working on the website over the summer so stay tuned in for that - we will be reaching out. We're forging ahead with our work with the Palm Springs Cultural Center, beginning the process for the WIFTI Summit to be held here and formulating our plans with SAG-AFTRA and COD.
BookPALS reaches more kids each year and Tere is our tireless lead on that!  Bravo on another stellar year- and thank you to all the readers!
We had our End of Season Mixer at Mitch's on El Paseo - and we sincerely want to thank Mitch and Milissa because they went above and beyond!  If you were there - and many of you were - you know how great the food was - and always is!  Lots of great wine - and members having a wonderful time mingling - but the delight of the evening was with Kelly Hall, the confirmed new DEAN of COD who spoke and introduced Laurilie Jackson, the new Head of Film/Journalism/RTV/Mass Media Studies for COD.   The programs they are building are very exciting for our community - and all the potential work that can come here now - plus all the new work that can be CREATED from here!
It's what we dreamed of 16 years ago when we began - to build a collaborative community base and highly trained crew so the industry can come here.........and today we see this everywhere - with DIGICOM, with DATA, with COD, with Indio and the East Valley!  It is happening - and it is wonderful!
So, take a few deep breaths this summer, relax and enjoy, and get geared up for an outstanding new season!
Dreams do come true!
See you in September!!

Leanna Bonamici

She is very excited about starting her role as President and continuing to work on projects that will help benefit the community of Palm Springs.

Nadine will be inducted along with her Rotary Club Board of Directors by Mayor Robert Moon on Wednesday, July 12th from 11:45-1 pm at the Hilton Palm Springs.

Brittney De Leon
Congratulations to Brittney DeLeon, PSWIFT student member, who is now an intern for the SAG-AFTRA Union Los Angeles.  She started working June 5th and her duties will involve assisting in organizing workshops for members who want to hone and develop their craft.

Brittany says she feels enormously grateful to work for an organization that stands for and works for its members. When asked why she decided to pursue a job with the LA office, Brittany replied, "I had decided that I was not going to take a summer job outside the industry because in order to be in the business, you have to know the business."

Good going, Brittany!

"Need a Intern?"

A Special Tribute...
Songbooks of Frank Sinatra & Judy Garland

Join PSWIFT member Loretta Siani for this very special tribute to Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland.

Loretta has just the right emotional intensity in her voice to sing the songs of both Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra.   Plus, she is a master story teller.  Come hear her tell the stories behind the songs of both Garland and Sinatra and also how each inspired her as a young girl growing up.

Did you know that Born on the Fourth of July  was a 1989 American biographical  war   drama film  based on the best-selling  autobiography   of  the same name  by  Vietnam War veteran   Ron Kovic?   Tom Cruise  played Ron Kovic, in a performance that earned him his first  Academy Award  nomination.  Oliver Stone  (himself a Vietnam veteran) co-wrote the  screenplay  with Kovic, and also produced and directed the film. Stone wanted to film the movie in  Vietnam , but because relations between the United States and Vietnam had not yet been normalized, it was instead filmed in the  Philippines . The film is considered part of Stone's "trilogy" of films about the Vietnam War-following  Platoon  (1986) and preceding  Heaven & Earth  (1993).

Born on the Fourth of July was nominated for eight  Academy Awards and won two, for  Best Director and  Best Film Editing; it also won four Golden Globe Awards and a Directors Guild of America Award. The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing $161,001,698 worldwide.
