PUBLIC NOTICE: MTA's Fare Evasion Team to Deploy on December 8; Select Bus Service (SBS) Passengers Without Ride Receipts Subject to $100 Summons

BROOKLYN, NY, December 4, 2013: Today, Council Member Jumaane D. Williams (D-Brooklyn) released the following statement, encouraging residents and riders along Select Bus Service (SBS), including the B44 routes, to retain receipts signifying that their fares have been paid to ride the bus or they could be subject to a $100 summons.

Beginning December 8, 2013, the MTA's 'Eagle Team' will be deployed along SBS bus routes, including the B44, that the MTA and the NYPD deem "problematic," and where fare evasion is common.

Passengers along the route that do not have their ride purchase receipts are subject to a $100 "Transit Adjudication Bureau" (TAB) summons/fine.

STATEMENT FROM COUNCIL MEMBER WILLIAMS

"The MTA's 'Eagle Team' will be checking riders for their receipts beginning December 8th. I strongly encourage all riders to be vigilant and store your ride receipts in a safe place after you pay your fare and board the bus. No passenger who has paid their fare should be subject to a $100 fine just because they lost their ticket. While you can appeal the summons to the MTA's Transit Adjudication Bureau, with just a little vigilance, you can avoid the hassle of a potential fine and get to your destination," said Council Member Williams.

Passengers who receive a summons can appeal. After a summons is issued, passengers have 90-days to resolve the violation. If the violation is not resolved within 90-days, the Transit Adjudication Bureau will enter a default judgement and pursue "appropriate legal means" to collect the judgement.

For more information about Transit Adjudication Bureau (TAB) summonses, how to appeal a summons, how to pay a summons, or to review relevant rules, visit the MTA's TAB website by clicking here.
