PURE Preparation

Greetings!

The summertime in Austin can seem pretty slow. The heat can keep many people inside. Being in the sun can be taxing and drain your energy. In other words, things can get a little slow...but not for PURE Bikram Yoga! We love the heat, in fact, we THRIVE in the heat! So it's only fitting that while most people have been taking a break, PURE Yogis have been hard at work! The summer has been super charged with PREPARATION for Fall fun! Our new South location is almost complete (insert: "hooray!"), our teachers and students are gearing up for competition training, some college athletes have been spotted swimming through the hot room and our Tx Rollergirls are putting on their Bengal Tiger faces for yet another year of Derby madness! Inside out, bones to skin, Bikram Yoga helps everyone prepare for what is most important in their lives.

We thank all of our facebook friends for being such a lively bunch on our PURE Bikram Yoga page! If you haven't joined the fun yet, be our fan!

Bikram Yoga for Roller Derby

By: Radio Active

     I kill it in the hot room so I can kill it on the track;

     I had just finished my 3rd flat track roller derby season, in which my team, the Hotrod Honeys, won the Texas Rollergirls Championship title again. I had just gotten a wonderful new, albeit high-stress, job at the University of Texas at Austin. 2009 was a great year, but on December 1st, I suffered a monumental and life-changing lower-back injury. The pain was unbearable, and my mobility was shot. I spent four entire days immobile in a bed; I spent the next nine months with a regiment of prescription drugs for pain. I pursued every avenue of medically-offered physical therapy possible: spinal decompression, chiropractics, MRIs, epidural steroid injections...the gamut. The prognosis was sciatica, with 2 severely hemorrhaged discs, one being fragmented. Every doctor had the same bleak outcome; spinal surgery and quit roller derby. EEK!  I couldn't play roller derby?! Actually, surgery would mean that I couldn't do a lot of things, but the only event pulsing in my chest was skating. No more skating? I couldn't bear the thought, or the back pain. I was in a lose/lose situation, and feeling quite hopeless.

     The Texas Rollergirls had done a (one) Bikram class before through a studio sponsorship before. I remember it being militant, harder than derby, heart bursting, and yea, quite militant; in one word...scary. So when my teammate, who fell in love with it after that first class, encouraged me to try Bikram Yoga to help my back, I was, well, scared.  But I was also at my wit's end, and at a point to make a decision on what to do. My doctor asked, "Well, are you going to skate another season?" and I told her, "I want to try." (shrugs). I did my research. I prepared. Who was Bikram? What is this killer hot yoga? How will it help me? (Couldn't hurt me, right?) I read a quote from Bikram that said, "Give me 60 days." I did not want surgery. I wanted to keep skating, and I had the time in off season. So that is just what I did, a 60-day challenge; hardest and most rewarding thing I have ever done.  I even blogged about it, http://radiosactivities.blogspot.com.

     It worked. After several months of practice, I no longer need prescription pain medication. I have more flexibility and strength in my back, and also my legs, arms, in my breathe, and in my mind. I manage my pain by doing Bikram Yoga. I could not play roller derby without yoga, it is my forever physical therapy. I am still skating, and the yoga has improved my balance and endurance on the track. The same eyes of determination I find in the mirror, I carry over to the game.

     Bikram Yoga has become a staple in my life; I crave the heat and postures. Though some of postures are still not in full expression, I give my 100% and know that I still reap the benefits. I acknowledge that it is still my only chance to continue roller derby. We are fortunate to have PURE Bikram as a sponsor for the Texas Rollergirls. During the season, it was my between-skate-practice cross-training. Now in off-season, it is how I prepare and maintain fitness for the next season. I love camel pose, and no matter how tired I am, I do both sets! Healthy spine, healthy life.
