May Meeting Extras

Sign Up for Summer Postcard Exchange by May 7
There's still time to sign up for the annual PaperWorks Summer Postcard Exchange! Slips were collected at the April meeting, but you can still get into the mix if you get your info to me ASAP.  Send your name, snail mail address, email address, and phone to by Sunday, May 7. If you have participated in the past, you know how much fun this is. Don't miss out this summer!

At the May meeting, you'll receive the name and address of a Secret Postcard Pal (I'll send names by email to those who don't pick them up). Over the course of the summer, you agree to send your pal three postcards (one per month or three all at once - your choice). Of course you can send as many as you want, but three is the minimum. They can be any medium, any motif, and any skill level - anything goes! Then in
early September, send a "reveal" postcard that either gives a clue to your identity or gives it away completely. At the September meeting, bring your postcards to display on the postcard table and hopefully
connect with your Secret Pal.  PLEASE sign up ONLY if you intend to participate, so nobody is disappointed.

Let's get ready to have some fun!

Weaving With Cardboard Supports
with Mary Ellen Palmeri

Sat., May 6, 9am - 4pm (one hour lunch break)
cost: $65  materials fee: $8
Using simple cardboard learn how to weave "off-loom" projects.  A materials fee of $8 will provide everything necessary for two fun  projects, a mini tapestry-sampler and a woven bag.  Handouts provide guidance for methods and techniques.

A tapestry-sampler is used to learn basic and fancy weaving techniques and to experiment with color and texture.  You can hang up the finished project using a dowel stick or a yarn loop.

The second project uses a unique way of applying warp cords to the cardboard support so that a "pocket" can be woven in one piece, without having to stitch pieces together.  The result is a small woven bag that is just right for carrying a phone or a pocket camera.  Also learn how to make a traditional rope strap to use as a shoulder or hand strap for your bag.

These projects can be adorned with beads, pom poms and other embellishments.

David Andres, printmaker and director of Bernal Gallery, who chose the recipients along with  Karen Hymer, head of the Photography Department at Pima Community College, said, "Jennifer won Best of Drawing in the
student show currently on exhibit at the Bernal Gallery. She is an exceptional talent; and Tommy received a Haystack Mountain crafts scholarship for summer 2017 and the PaperWorks scholarship will provide a cushion of dollars for him while he's there."

Membership News

Currently our membership dues cover the year beginning July 1 and ending June 30.  This timeline seems to be very confusing and results in dues not being paid on time or being paid twice.  Many members are not in town after July 1 as well.  After discussion and approval from the board, we have decided to change our membership year to January 1 through December 31.

To implement this change, membership dues of $50 will be paid on July 1, 2017 for July 1, 2017 to December 31, 2018.  Members will pay $50 for one and a half year's dues, and then return to $35 yearly dues on January 1, 2019.

A digital invoice will be sent to all current members on July 1, 2017 for this amount and will include links to pay via Pay Pal, credit card or information to pay by check.
