Important Water Level Meeting - by Sandy Boeckh
As I stood on the rocks in a foot of water on the weekend, I surveyed the aquatic plant growth that is taking over the swim hole I have enjoyed for over 50 years. Invasive round goby swam up to investigate my toes, and I gazed across the bay at the young pines growing around the water's edge that was formerly under water with lily pads on the surface and pike swimming beneath. I remember even lower water levels in the early 60's but have never experienced SUSTAINED low water levels like this.

Please skip your picnics and leave your tennis racquets behind for a few hours on Monday, July 16th, to attend an important public meeting on water levels in Parry Sound. This is one of several public hearings, both in Canada and the US, with the International Joint Commission (IJC) to provide public input to the final findings and recommendations of the International Upper Great Lakes Study. (This final report to the IJC was released in March, 2012 and addressed fluctuating/declining water levels with an "Adaptive Management" approach. This "do-nothing" approach was chosen over other alternatives such as Multi-Lake Regulation or Restoration of Lake Michigan-Huron levels.)

Monday, July 16th in Parry Sound, ON
1:00 pm EDT
at 7 17 Mary Steet in the Bobby Orr Community Centre

Update to White Pine Blister Rust

Should you have evidence of the White Pine Blister rust as described in the June 20th eblast, please know that the best practice for controlling white pine blister rust is removing all currants and gooseberries [left] from the island because they serve as an alternate host for the rust fungus that causes white pine blister rust. For more detail information click on the Forest Health Article.

Stay Alert - It's Snakebite Season!
Massasauga Rattlesnake2

Please exercise caution while walking around your property in cottage country. As of the last week in June, the West Parry Sound Health Centre had the season's second rattlesnake bite patient in ICU. The long-time Carling cottager was out for her ritual a.m. walk along a path through the blueberry bushes and was exercising her usual level of caution. She felt a "sharp, bee-like sting" and knew she had been bitten by a rattlesnake. It sounds as though there may not have been a warning rattle, which can happen if the snake is young or taken by surprise.

Two bites on record by late June may be an indication that we are in for another season of multiple bites as was the case in summer, 2010. Rattlesnakes like to bask in the sun to obtain heat from the environment but are nocturnal hunters. Please be vigilant at all times while walking around your property and wear shoes and carry a flashlight while out at night. Stay alert and use your eyes and ears - walking around with earphones is not recommended!

Boating Courtesy Promotes Boating Safety
Remember to be considerate of fellow boaters, especially in the more narrow channels in the Station Channel, at Brignall Banks and around the S-Turn.  It only takes an extra few seconds out of your day to slow down!

Thanks To Everyone For A Fantastic PaB Canada Day!
Canadian Flag
Oh Canada!

2012 Canada Day celebrations in PaB, put on by the Chamber of Commerce, were well attended with many events and activities for all: The Boat Parade, The Walking Parade, The Ribbon cutting ceremonies for the new 'Lighthouse' at the Station, the Pickeral Lunch, with plenty of Arts and Crafts booths to enjoy! The local merchants donated many items for the silent auction to raise funds for the community.  Read more about it!
