Chamber Communiqué
July/August 2016

Aaahhhh...the lazy days of summer.

Note from the Executive Director

Greetings,

Summer is upon us and the chamber is busy with both community events and issues facing businesses in the upcoming months.  First, I would just like to congratulate Pagosa businesses and reiterate HOW important it is for our businesses to exude hospitality and go the extra mile.  Good job Pagosa businesses!

"My sister, my husband and I spent last week (June 27, 2016) in Pagosa Springs.  A friend of mine volunteered her condo in Pagosa for our stay.  We had no expectations but to get away from the Dallas heat and the routine of our busy lives.  Our experience in your 'corner of the National Forest' was simply delightful.  We enjoyed the sites, the food, the shopping, the music; but most of all we were refreshed by the folks in the community, locals and tourists.  All people of service were more than helpful and hospitable.  We found the experience to be the most affordable vacation any of us have EVER had.  We really enjoyed our stay in Pagosa Springs."  Sid & Laurie Latham - Dallas, TX & Shannon Kennemer - San Antonio, TX.

The Chamber will host our 2nd Annual Golf Mixer on Saturday, July 23 at the Pagosa Springs Golf Club.  The talk of the town is the "Hole In One" prize, which is a Masters Golf Tournament Prize Package for 2.  This 6 day/5 night package for two includes roundtrip airfare, lodging, entrance badges to the tournament for Thursday - Sunday and event transfers.  This is certainly the prize to win!  The tournament will be a 4 person scramble starting at 8:30 a.m. The entry fee is $70 per person and includes greens and cart fees, range balls, lunch and the chance to try your hand at all the different contests.  Registration can be completed at the Chamber or at the golf club.  There are still sponsorship opportunities for your business.
From July 26-31 (except for July 28) the Chamber will be found at Town Park serving  breakfast and lunch items for the Cowboy Fast Draw State and National Championships.   The local Fast Draw group has been instrumental in bringing this event to Pagosa Springs to rave reviews of the attendees.  The Fast Draw is open to the public and families are encouraged to attend.
ColorFest activities are also already getting underway for the September 16-18 event.  Tickets for Friday evening's Passport to Pagosa Wine & Food Festival, Sept. 16  will go on sale Wednesday, July 20.  Don't forget to purchase your tickets early, as we could sell out like last year!  Tickets for this event are $45 per person.  The Pagosa Springs Music and Microbrew Festival takes place on Saturday, September 17.  Microbreweries from all over the region will be in attendance for this rockin' event.  Highlighting the music will be the region's own High Rollers, always a crowd pleaser.  Tickets are only sold at the gate.  It will be $25 for the beer tasting and $10 for general admission.  Wine will be served by the glass, there will be food vendors and there will be activities for the kiddos.  Mark these dates down on your calendar now!
In November, voters will be faced with a very full ballot with candidates and state issues.  Pagosa's League of Women Voters will be hosting several different forums, and we encourage you to attend and learn more about the candidates and what they stand for and to find out more about the state issues.  Heavily impacting businesses will be Amendment 69 - the Colorado Care Act or Single Payer System.  This constitutional amendment will take the place of the Affordable Care Act with a tax increase to businesses, employees and also non-payroll income.  You can find out more at www.coloradocare.org (pro) and www.coloradansforcoloradans.com .   Also on the ballot will be the Food Stores License (Beer & Wine Sales).  This measure will allow "food stores" to obtain a license and to sell malt and vinous liquors.  The Colorado Priorities measure would allow the state to retain excess revenues above the TABOR limit to be used 35% for transportation, 35% for education and 30% for mental health and senior services.  It is similar to "Ref C" back in 2005 and is intended to address critical funding shortfalls.  Let CO Vote/Presidential Primary is also on the ballot, bringing back a presidential primary in CO beginning in 2020.  There are about 8 more issues that will be on the ballot.  A little overwhelmed - research and find out how these ballot initiatives affect you.  The Chamber does have some information on Amendment 69, which you are welcome to pick up and the state "Blue Book" on issues should be coming out soon.  Don't just run your business.  Run your business knowledgeably, and find out about the issues that could impact you.
The Chamber has also just joined a partnership with the Associates Insurance Group, offering Chamber members savings on workers comp and employer-paid health care rates.  This is a fantastic benefit and one that every chamber business should be taking advantage of.  Please call the chamber to find out how a representative can contact you about your workers comp coverage.  Don't you want to save some money and still get excellent coverage and additional perks? Call us to have a representative contact you.
The Chamber is working hard to provide our business community with education, cost saving benefits, marketing and networking opportunities and value. If you haven't reviewed your benefit offerings lately or would like to find out how your membership can serve you better, contact us.  We want you and your business to get the most for your money!  Enjoy the busy summer!

Sincerely,

Mary Jo Coulehan

Unique, soothing, talented, "we can hold a conversation" are the general comments I consistently recieve. My musical hope is to be part of the beautiful settings and to enhance the settings by providing fingerstyle guitar (and some banjo, because it's a banjo!) My motto is, " I want to be part of the scene, but not be the scene." I respect that a venue owner is working hard to keep his/her business going. My music should help the venue owner be successful. A perfect "gig" for me is one in which the folks listening enjoyed great food and wine, let the stress vanish, conversed at their table without shouting, and commented, " The guitar music was really very nice. We'll be back!" In addition, my goal is to provide peaceful moments for listeners and my hope is that the peaceful moments will remind the listeners of the author of peace - Jesus.

It's no secret the construction process can be challenging, tedious and often frustrating. Communication with government agencies and associations often escalates to an unnexessary level of emotions as different personalities work through the process. It can be difficult to keep an objective perspective and not take things personally at times. Our local officials are professional and caring people and are doing their best with the resources they are given. My comprehensive approach to the process is designed to remove that personal and often times emotional element. Over the past 15 years I've developed strong professional relationships with personnel in government agencies, utility offices and the many Home Owners Associations here in Archuleta County. I've been on all sides of the process as owner/builder, county employee and general contractor so I get it. All of it. The process need not be contentions or unpleasant. Let me take the task off your schedule so you can get to work!

CDC Corner

Earlier this year, the Pagosa Springs Community Development Corporation (CDC) was pleased to extend two microloans to two new businesses in Pagosa Springs.  With assistance from the CDC, Region 9 and 1st Southwest Bank, Cabe's Collision and Alpine Medical and Specialty Practices started their businesses, which are assets to this community.  The CDC announces that they still have funds available to loan to new or expanding businesses here in Pagosa Springs.  Through a grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka Economic Development - Joint Opportunities for Building Success (JOBS) Grant Program, the Pagosa Springs CDC acquired $25,000 to assist businesses in our community.  With funds still available, the CDC would like to encourage a new business or an expanding business to check into this lending option.  For more information, you can visit the CDC website at www.pagosaspringscdc.org and click on the Loan tab or contact the Chamber of Commerce for more information.

At the end of August, the CDC will also present the results of the Broadband study conducted by the Southwest Council of Governments.   Since May, the SWCOG in partnership with NeoConnect (formerly NeoFiber) has been doing an assessment study of broadband capability in rural communities in Southwest Colorado.  At the end of August, these results will be made public with an emphasis on the needs and inventory of services in Archuleta County.  The CDC will host this public forum and announce the specific date soon.  The public, and especially the business community, is welcome to attend.

The next public meeting of the Community Development Corporation will be held on Wednesday, July 13 at San Juan Marketplace from 5:30 -7:30 p.m.  CDC members and the community are welcome to attend.  Check the CDC website www.pagosaspringscdc.org for the agenda.
