Chamber Communiqué
November/December 2016

The turkey is baking and the family comes soon,
Christmas lists are written; the tree lights the room,
Memories will be made and others retold,
The gift of the holidays, in our hearts we hold.

Note from the Executive Director

Greetings,

Chamber Projects Working for Our Business Community!

Adobe Building Fire
The Chamber of Commerce has been busy with projects - some not so pleasant and others we are very excited about.  Let's start with the Adobe Building Fire and how you can participate in assisting those affected by this incredible disaster.  The Community Foundation Serving Southwest Colorado based in Durango has offered to be the recipient of donations for those affected by the fire at the Adobe Building which occurred on Saturday, October 22, 2016.  Over a dozen businesses in the Adobe Building and approximately 15 employees at the Bear Creek were affected.  Those wishing to make a financial contribution to assist the employees affected by the fire may do so in two ways.  Visit the Community Foundation website at www.swcommunityfoundation.org and click on the Pay Pal Donation tab located on the home page.  Please designate Pagosa Adobe Building Fire to alert where the funds are to be allocated to.  Contributors may also send checks directly to the Foundation at Community Foundation Serving Southwest Colorado, P.O. Box 1673, Durango, CO  81302.  Designate in the memo section of the check the Pagosa Adobe Building Fire.  Funds will be used to assist hourly employees and those affected by the fire and in need of emergency services due to loss of business.
Many of the businesses have received generous donations of furniture, printers, and other items.  We still have some items that businesses are in need of as a few of the businesses have not relocated yet.  Please visit the Chamber's website to see what items may still be in need.  With it being the slow season before the rush of the holidays, we know that businesses are having a hard time hiring extra people and need to take care of those already employed.  However, keep the employees of the Bear Creek in mind and contact the chamber if you have an opening and we can contact them.  Many thanks to the Colorado Workforce who has also been working with them.  If you would also like to contribute household goods, non-perishable food or personal items or diapers, you may bring them to the chamber and we will help distribute them to the employees.  Thank you for the generous donations that have come in and for all your support.
2017 Economic Outlook Survey
Beginning November 15, the Chamber of Commerce and the Community Development Corporation (CDC) will be hosting an online 2017 Economic Outlook Survey that we are asking the business community to participate in.  The survey will take about 5 minutes to complete and includes not only how you look at Pagosa Springs, but also running a business in Southwest Colorado and in the state of Colorado.  The survey will give our community leaders a clear picture of where you think your business is heading in 2017 including hiring, expansion or  downsizing and  what you feel are your top challenges WITHIN your business and DOING Business in Pagosa Springs.  A key question in the survey is "what must happen to make Pagosa Springs a great place to start or grow a business".  You do not have to be a chamber member to participate in the survey.  The link to the survey will be hosted on both the Chamber and CDC's websites.  You can be the owner of a bricks and mortar business, a home based business, or someone renting office space.  We would just like you to participate in the survey!
While the community is working on several key issues, we need to hear from the business community where the major emphasis needs to be placed.   Not many people like to fill out surveys, but with major issues in our community such as available workforce, childcare, and housing we need to prioritize and therefore, need the input from our business community.  Businesses will have the opportunity to complete the survey until Friday, December 9.  If you fill out the survey, you will also have the option to receive a free pre-release of the survey results.  This survey also gives the Chamber and the CDC ideas of where to focus their energies and what resources we need to work on.  The survey is being managed through the Baker Strategy Group.  You will be receiving reminders and links to the survey in the upcoming weeks.  Again, we would appreciate your input.
2016 Parade of Stores - SHOP LOCAL
We are re-invigorated with encouraging people to SHOP LOCAL!  This year's Parade of Stores event will take place from Thursday to Sunday, December 1-4, 2016.  We are encouraging retailers to pull out the stops and help us get people out to SHOP LOCAL.  This event will not be touted as a "No Tax" shopping weekend, but as a "Community-wide Dynamic Discounts".  In this way, each store can choose their discount and market the savings.  We encourage businesses to host "open houses", special deal days - anything you want to do to encourage people to look within their community and shop at home.
We will also be working with the restaurants to participate in the event and offer shopping specials throughout that weekend to encourage people to shop, take a break and visit our restaurants as well.  Make the shopping time a fun experience whether you do so with a group of girlfriends or as a family or couples shopping.  Rediscover our community and see what Pagosa has in store for you this holiday season.  We will also be marketing more to our neighbor communities to get them to come to Pagosa for the day.
Did You Know the Chamber is Working On...
The Chamber is very excited about the programs that we have to offer and our role in the community.  Currently we are sitting on two work groups that the Town and County have identified as issues that need immediate attention in our community:  Early Childhood Care & Education and Housing.  We assisted the ECCWG with their childcare survey.  Through the Community Development Corporation, we wrote a grant and were awarded state assistance through the Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT) for a Tiny Homes work shop.  City and County officials and planners, architects, builders, housing workgroup leaders and financial representatives were in attendance to not only address Tiny Homes, but housing in general. We know how important these issues are to the running of your businesses and we want to be a part of solving the problems.
The Chamber is also looking at redefining membership benefits.  We want to make sure that businesses are getting the biggest bang for their buck, NOT because of the size of their business, but what benefits would be MOST USEFUL for you.  This program is a big shift in how we perceive our chamber benefits; however, we want to have your business engaged and perhaps tailor the system more to meet your needs.  Look for exciting membership changes in 2017 - because "nothing is constant but change"  - and we want to make it good change!
Thank you for your membership and support!

Sincerely,

Mary Jo Coulehan

Executive Director

Axis Health System has resumed operations

Dear Colleagues, October 28, 2016
After the fire last weekend, the community support has been incredible and very appreciated. With a little help from our friends, we have been able to keep patient care and community access available and identify and secure some clinic space. Axis Health System, Pagosa Springs Behavioral Healthcare office resumed some operations on Monday at the Catholic Education Center (CEC) located at 462 Lewis Street. This was a temporary location planned to be used through Friday, November 4 to support basic patient care and community crisis response access while we identified another space to relocate to.
We are pleased to announce that beginning Monday, November 7, Pagosa Springs Behavioral Healthcare will be back to full operations at 46 Eaton Drive, located behind City Market. We will resume providing our full continuum of care at this new location from Nov. 7 through May 2017, when there is a planned move to the new Archuleta Integrated Healthcare clinic, which is currently under construction. While this interim move was clearly unplanned and required as a result of the fire, we are moving quickly to restore services in a manner that will accommodate our patient and community needs until such time that our new facility is available.

CDC Corner

Are you interested in better broadband coverage in Pagosa Springs?  How about more availability of childcare or better housing options?  What about diversifying our  economy and attracting new businesses.  Pagosa Springs is experiencing economic growth and expansion and with that growth comes some infrastructure challenges.  We are not unique - most communities in Colorado are experiencing the same challenges whether a big or small community.  The Community Development Corporation (CDC) is working with others on community work groups to try and solve some of these issues.  Members of the CDC board are business owners and so understand the challenges that businesses experience.  They work behind the scenes to improve the economic vitality of our community by coordinating groups, sitting on workgroups and spearheading initiatives such as improving broadband.
The days of bringing in one big company or a "silver bullet" to the community are gone.  Economic Development groups work on improving infrastructure, help to grow existing businesses or assist new businesses and spearhead addressing issues that prevent economic growth and vitality.  So far this year the CDC and Chamber have fielded over 30 inquiries of opening, moving or expanding a business here in Pagosa Springs.  Some inquiries are for the immediate future, some are not for several years.  The CDC in partnership with Region 9 and 1st Southwest Bank created a microloan program and funded 2 start-up businesses here in the community:  Alpine Medical and Specialty Practices and Cabe's Collision.  Another loan is in the works.  The CDC is working with parties interested in expanding to Pagosa Springs.
When the CDC works with an interested party, the CDC and interested party need to know the make-up of the whole community and get the community involved.  These efforts include utility companies, banks or investment agencies, government agencies and other businesses.  Your participation in the CDC lends expertise and a voice in helping to shape the economic growth of our community.  Your company should think about becoming a member of the Pagosa Springs CDC.  Membership also has its benefits as your investment over $250 allows you to receive a state Enterprise Tax Zone credit and $50 rebate if you are also a Chamber member and discounts to CDC and Chamber meetings and training events.   Find out more about how your company can contribute to the overall success of economic development here in Pagosa Springs through your membership.  Please contact the Chamber at 264-2360 or email Amanda at info@pagosachamber.com .  Visit the CDC website at www.pagosaspringscdc.org and stay current of economic statistics, events and meetings.  The latest retail sales tax data is available on the website.

The next public meeting of the Community Development Corporation will be held on Wednesday, November 9th at San Juan Marketplace from 5:30 -7:30 p.m.  CDC members and the community are welcome to attend.  Check the CDC website www.pagosaspringscdc.org for the agenda.
