Lake Alice is a wonderful oasis on the University of Florida campus. I have painted there for many years. I like to go on Sunday morning and do little paintings of the lake, the marshy grasses and patterns in the water. This is the chapel on the lake where many young couples tie the knot. In the winter the cypress trees are a beautiful color. Once I had a close encounter with an alligator there. I stepped on his tail in the dark and we both thrashed around trying to escape each other. Not a fun experience and it taught me not to get there before sunlight. There is all kinds of wildlife living around and in the lake, so be careful there.

Tip of the Day

Observing wildlife

The very first important tip is to respect wildlife. Leave nothing in the woods except your footprints. Don't disturb nests or other habitats. Start observing early in the morning. When the day breaks, the waking wildlife is spectacular. Move quietly and as soundlessly as you can. Be very patient, it takes time. Stay observant at all times. Follow your intuition and senses. Do not forget that animals can smell you so keep a low profile. Choose the right time and place. Look for signs. Bring your camera or a journal to record your findings. Collecting seeds and leaves can be a fun way to add to your book. I often collect wildflower seeds when I'm out in the woods and fields. I give them to friends.
