I realized today that "Charlotte" the banana spider did not arrive this summer. Almost every year I have at least one who takes up residence on my porch overhang at the painting studio. Often I end up with 3 or 4 spider roommates, who arrive in May and hang around through September. I've not seen a one so far. I wonder if it is because of all the rain we have had this year?

Tip of the Day

If you like photographing birds, make sure there is a water supply and feeders in an area that has a pretty background behind them. Also, provide lots of perches near your feeders. Make a blind of some kind where you can sit and have your camera lense focused on the feeders, water and perches. Keep a chair and binoculars behind the blind and wait patiently. You will have more bird activity in the morning and late afternoon.

Today's Recipe

  From: Wendy Ledbetter

Gazpacho-I only make this when I have great summer tomatoes for the best flavor.
6 cups (46 oz.) tomato juice
1/2 cup white wine vinegar
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 Tbsp kosher salt
1 1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
Mix and place in a large bowl. Set aside.
2 cucumbers
3 bell peppers (red, yellow, orange make a pretty mix)
4-6 large tomatoes
1 small-medium red onion
1 Tbsp minced garlic
In food process with a sharp blade place each cucs and peppers separately. Roughly chop into 1" pieces. Don't overchop. You want it to be chunky.
Add each chopped vegetable to liquid mixture.  I like hand chopping the tomatoes.
Mix well and chill.
The more it sits the better flavor.
Serve with crusty bread.
