From the PREZ...
Hello Chapter Members--

With the holidays behind us and a new year upon us, it is a great time to reflect back on some of the "hot topics" in the accounting world in 2014. I don't think I attended a single CPE class in all of 2014 that didn't at least touch on the Affordable Care Act. With many of the original due dates/implementation dates being in 2014, we started out the year with much uncertainty as to what needed to be done and when. Well, we ended the year pretty much in the same position we started from. We had the issues with the Obamacare website not working properly, due dates have been changed and then changed again. One thing is for certain, there will be a lot of extra work for both corporate and public accountants in the years to come.

The final tangible property regulations came in to effect January 1, 2014, giving us de minimis safe harbor expense amounts and IRS definitions of things like "unit of property" and "plant property". There was wide spread panic for us tax accountants, that we'd have to file a change in accounting method for every business we file a tax return for. While the sky isn't quiet falling on us, there is still a lot of work we will have to do for the 2014 tax returns on certain businesses.

As the year began to wind down, we were left wondering, until the last minute, which expiring tax provisions would be extended and which would be allowed to expire. Do you think the government will ever get to a point where we don't have to wait and wonder? It's hard to do any kind of tax planning when we don't know for certain what the rules are.

Well 2014 is now behind us but we will feel its impact far into the future. With so much change in the field of accounting, we have the opportunity to be valuable assets to the businesses and clients we serve. The Panhandle Chapter TSCPA will continue to strive to provide you, our members, with quality CPE to keep you up-to-date on the latest accounting and tax law changes. I look forward to our future together and to serving the Panhandle Chapter of the TSCPA to the best of my abilities.

Sincerely,

Alicia M. Pickens, CPA

From the Executive Director
Happy New Year!

As Alicia pointed out in her report, we have a lot of work to do this tax season.  Likewise, things have been busy for the Chapter as well.

First, we participated with the Amarillo Area Estate Planning Council in a joint CPE event on Section 1031 exchanges.  Then eight of us headed down to Austin for the TSCPA Mid Year Board of Directors meeting.  While we were there, both the Texas House and Senate issued proclamations in celebration of the TSCPA and TSBPA's 100th Anniversary!

Coming off the heals of our own 75th Anniversary, we realize what an honor it is to be a CPA in the Panhandle of Texas.

May this busy season be your best!

Let us know how we can serve you!

CELEBRATE GOOD TIMES -- 75th Anniversary!
In conjunction with the Tax Update in December, we celebrated our 75th Anniversary as a Chapter.  Despite a couple unforeseen circumstances, we had a great time of celebrating our Chapter and its accomplishments.  We received a Proclamation from the Mayor's office, Mark Lee spoke via phone, we presented tenure awards, ate anniversary cake and toasted to  MANY GOOD YEARS.

If a personal finance resolution tops your list or the list of someone you know, stop by www.ValueYourMoney.org. TSCPA's free consumer financial literacy website features practical articles and helpful resources to get your finances on track. While you're there, visit the Parenthood section for information about the children's book club, which promotes literature to help them learn that money really doesn't grow on trees. You can also download a recommended reading list of books that teach children the basics of money.

Do you enjoy speaking about personal finance and small business topics? If so, sign up for TSCPA's speakers bureau. TSCPA is looking for CPAs to speak at community and civic programs and to the media. There are talking points, speeches and PowerPoint presentations to make each speaking opportunity as easy as possible. The speakers bureau is one way for CPAs to become involved in TSCPA's ongoing Financial Literacy effort. To volunteer, e-mail Avery Elander [email protected]; phone 800-428-0272 ext. 688 or 972-687-8688.)
