Message from Mrs. Kunze & Announcements
It is time to complete the annual SAC Needs Assessment Survey. Please take a few minutes to complete the parent survey. Thank you.

CHANGE in graduation rehearsal. Our original rehearsal date of Thursday, May 17th at 10am conflicted with Advanced Placement exams, so our request to change the date and time was approved by UNF this week. The REQUIRED graduation rehearsal is now Friday, May 18th from noon to 2pm at UNF. ALL Seniors participating in the graduation ceremony MUST attend rehearsal. Graduation is Monday, May 21st at 7pm.

There have been social media posts written this week, which have generated many phones calls from parents asking about the walk-out scheduled for Wednesday, March 14th. We at Nease are not promoting this event and have only responded to students who have specifically asked if they would be allowed to participate. There has not been a school-wide announcement to inform students about the event or that they can participate. The principals in our district were asked by Superintendent Forson to provide structure for our students who wanted to participate, since student safety is our number one priority and we do not want students just walking off campus. Students who have inquired have been told that they can leave class and gather in the courtyard behind Panther Hall, but may not leave campus. The walk-out is supposed to last for 17mins - one minute for each victim of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. This student-led event will be to honor and support the victims and will not be political in nature.

Nease is looking for 10 parent volunteers to assist in the day-long Reality Fair for our senior Economics students. The fantastic event, held in the Media Center, gives seniors a look into the complexities of real-life budgeting and supporting a family in our economy. If you are willing to volunteer for the event on April 3rd, in the Media Center, please email [email protected]

The Superintendent of the United States Coast Guard Academy, Rear Admiral James Rendon, will be on campus Thursday, March 15 th , during 6 th period, to give a presentation on the Coast Guard Academy. The Coast Guard Academy is one of the nation’s four service academies along with West Point, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy. It is a rare occasion that any major university or Service Academy’s top official comes for a presentation. All interested students (9-12) are invited to attend. To get a pass to the guest speaker event, students can go to the front desk, sign up on the green sheet, and receive a pass, which will need to be signed by their 6 th period teacher. Students will bring their signed pass to the ROTC building at the time of the event to get in.
With the beautiful weather we are having comes shorts, skirts, and tank tops. Please remind your child that we have a pretty relaxed dress code compared to other schools. We are strictly enforcing the following:
  • No low cut tops revealing cleavage
  • No tube tops or tops without any straps
  • No midriffs exposed
  • No shorts or skirts shorter than 4" above the knee
  • No holes in jeans exposing skin 4" above the knee
Reminder from the Dean’s Office:
There are only four days remaining in this quarter and tardies are accumulating. Avoid detentions and In School Suspension by getting to every class on time.
  • 1st tardy - warning
  • 2nd tardy - warning
  • 3rd tardy - warning
  • 4th tardy - counsel with dean
  • 5th tardy - one lunch detention
  • 6th tardy - three lunch detentions
  • 7th tardy - 1 day of In-School Suspension (ISS)
  • 8th tardy - 2 days of ISS
  • 9th tardy plus - Out-of-School Suspension (OSS)
Tardies will not be removed or negotiated, since all students will start with a clean slate EACH quarter.

Four-peat !
Nease JROTC is best in northern Florida & state of Georgia

PONTE VEDRA – Nease Navy JROTC won the Area 12 Drill Championships on March 3 in Douglas, Georgia – winning this championship for the 4 th consecutive year thus earning a trip to the national championships.

Nease competed against the top 16 Navy high school JROTC drill teams in Area 12, which includes all of northern Florida and the state of Georgia. Sixty NJROTC programs competed at local drill meets during the fall and winter with the top 16 advancing to the Area championships. Nease earned its berth by winning first place at both the Mandarin HS and Terry Parker HS drill competitions earlier.

“This win was a total team effort,” said cadet battalion commander Connie Oswald. “Our athletic, academic and drill teams picked the right moment to deliver their best performances.”

In addition to winning the overall drill meet championships, Nease claimed first place in Personnel Inspection, Overall Drill, Unarmed Exhibition, and Armed Exhibition; second place in Overall Athletics, Academics, Unarmed Basic, Pushups and Situps; and third place in Armed Basic.

Several cadets also earned individual medals for achievement including Scott Cummings in Academics; Erin Sass (106) in Pushups; and Elizabeth Villalba (305), Aberlyn Short (300) and Teagan Pettit (284) in Situps.
“The cadets really buckled down hard in practice leading up to the championship,” said naval science instructor Master Chief Petty Officer Duane Spears. “Team works makes the dream work.”

Nease will now travel to the Navy National Drill Championships in Pensacola, Florida on April 6-7.
The Nease Math team competed in another competition and again made our school proud!
Nease HS is the only St John’s County school to attend these competitions. This past weekend, at Flagler Palm Coast HS, our Statistics team placed 3 rd ! The statistics team consists of Nell Crlenjak, Andre Alvarez, Maanasi Vadlamani, and Joanne Lee.

Nease is hosting a math competition on April 7 th for all St John’s County High Schools.
If students are interesting in competing, please sign up with your math teacher!
Last Saturday we had 5 students participate in the Internatiional Crisis Management Exercise. The scenario was North Korea as a Nuclear Threat.

If you are an Academy student, and want to drop your Academy for next year, you must fill out and turn in an Academy Drop form. Email Mrs. Combs at [email protected] to request a form. We will not remove an Academy class from the student’s 2018-19 schedule until we’ve received the completed form, per district policy.

Upcoming Academy Field Trips:
Sawgrass Marriott – Academy of Hospitality & Tourism (March 13 th )
St. Augustine Amphitheater – Academy of Hospitality & Tourism (March 19 th )
England-Thims & Miller Lunch and Learn – Stellar Academy of Engineering (April 5 th )

Students will be able to get field trip forms from their Academy teachers two weeks before the trips take place.

A reminder that Academy students sign a contract at the beginning of each year stating that they will maintain certain academic and behavioral standards in order to remain in an Academy program. Academy students must maintain a total GPA of at least a 2.0, and must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA (75%) in an Academy class. A student in an Academy must also maintain a good discipline record.
In accordance with district policy, if a student does not meet these requirements, he/she will be placed on probation for a semester. If, at the end of that probation period, he/she does not have a GPA which meets the requirements, or fails to have an improved discipline record, the student will be removed from the Academy. If an Out of Zone student is removed from an Academy, he/she will be transferred back to his/her zoned school. Letters were mailed home and delivered to students in class in early February, to make students and parents aware of probationary status for the remainder of the 2017-2018 school year.

If you have any questions or concerns about Nease’s Academy of Hospitality & Tourism, Communications Academy, or the Stellar Academy of Engineering, please contact Jaime Combs, Academy Coordinator, at [email protected]

Great Decisions, brought to us by World Affairs Council Jacksonville http://www.worldaffairscounciljax.org, is a non-partisan high school enrichment program on foreign affairs that fosters critical-thinking, conversation and decision-making skills. College professors and high school teachers co-facilitate the monthly sessions at school, and encourage students to drive the conversation, ask questions and share opinions. Additionally, interactive program components off campus provide students the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge in peer discussions. For content information see http://www.fpa.org/great_decisions

If interested, please join the Schoology group, “Great Decisions Nease” access code 5VTWW-9SNBQ. All events and opportunities will be announced through that Schoology group.

Please note that Great Decisions, The World Affairs Council of Jacksonville, and the Foreign Policy Association are not officially affiliated with Nease High School nor with the Saint Johns County School District. They offer these timely and relevant events to the community free of charge, and I believe they are valuable because they bear on the material taught in many of the courses here at Nease.
