A Modern Day Miracle - 70 + Years in the Making

Toward the end of World War II, Holocaust victims sought to save what little was left of their communities . . . Torahs.  Torahs were hidden in the hopes that they would survive even if the Jews and their communities did not.

Now, over 70 years after the end of World War II, hundreds of Torahs have been found in Russia and they are in the process of being returned to the Jewish people.

Join us on Sunday January 14 to hear the story of a real life hero and Tzedekes - Sibyl Silver of The Jewish Heritage Foundation who is responsible for finding, authenticating and bringing Jewish and Holocaust survivor communities together to rescue these Torahs so they can be returned to religious, communal and educational uses.

The Foundation was created to address a problem that has not been solved by governments, organizations or activist communities.   Judaica that was stolen by the Nazis from Jewish communities of Europe have/has not yet been accounted for or returned.     This Judaica has been kept by the successor governments in European countries, former Eastern European countries and The Commonwealth of Independent States (the countries of the former Soviet Union).     The Foundation is committed these simple but all important principles:   # 1 - Stolen Judaica should be returned to the Jewish people.   # 2 - Stolen Judaica should be used to help rebuild the communities from which it was stolen.   # 3 - Stolen Judaica should be used to help keep alive and honor the memories of the martyrs of the Holocaust through education and museum projects worldwide.

Our guest Sybil Silver along with her husband Bob a"h founded The Jewish Heritage Foundation to rescue hundreds of Torah scrolls. For over 70 years, the largest collection of items of Judaica that were stolen from Jewish communities throughout Europe have been held in countries of the former Soviet Union.  The largest of all Jewish Organizations, the most powerful and influential of politicans from around the world, the best connected business persons in the Commonwealth of Independent States and the greatest experts from around the world have tried without success to locate, document and restore these items.   Starting in  2011, a small group of "regular" Jews from Florida came together with some of the world's leading experts in Holocaust education and museums and a group of Rabbis from Russia, Hungary, Austria, the Czech Republic, Cyprus and the United States.

The timing was right. Join us for this fascinating story of intrigue, politics and old-fashioned "chutzpa" - A Modern Day Miracle.

California is suffering today from a surplus of rain while in Israel...

כ"ד טבת תשע"ח
January 11, 2018

Dear Rav Langer,
The third chapter of Masekhet Ta'anit (Seder Ta'aniyot 'Eilu) prescribes
a religious response to the lack of rainfall in the Land of Israel. This year, despite some heavy precipitation, there remains a significant deficit in rainfall which can result, chas ve-shalom, in irreparable damage to the Sea of Galilee and underground aquifers, harm to economies dependent on the Kinneret, and other significant damage. The Chief Rabbinate has called on Israelis to include the special prayer of Ve-'anneinu Borei 'Olam to their daily Shemoneh 'Esrei. We in the Diaspora may not and cannot remain indifferent and passively silent.
The RCA and OU join together in urging you and your congregations to include Ve-'anneinu in your daily prayers. Rav Hershel Schachter supports this request and suggests, in an attempt to minimize the burden on the community, that this paragraph be added only by the shali'ach tzibbur in his repetition during the berakhah of Shomei'a Tefillah. We urge you to add prayer to your other initiatives-- political, philanthropic, communal, educational, and personal-- on behalf of the Land and State of Israel. In addition, we urge your communities to bear in mind all of those places which are endangered due to drought.

The paragraph (and translation) can be found in the Koren Sacks siddur on page 137, or below.
