Va'etchanan - Week's Torah Reading
As the Jew stand on the banks of the Jordan River about to finally enter Eretz Yisrael, Moshe reviews many mitzvot with the people. In Va'etchanan, this week's parsha, we have Shema and the Aseret Hadibrot - the Ten Commandments.
It is fascinating to compare the two texts of the Ten Commandments and to analyze the differences. One famous difference, the mitzva of Shabbat, is addressed in the familiar line of L'cha Dodi, sung on Friday night welcoming Shabbat to our homes and our lives.
The text in Shemot says Zachor- remember Shabbat while in Devarim it says Shamor - guard - don't work on this day. There are two aspects to observing Shabbat, the positive and the negative. We are enjoined from working and we are told to honor Shabbat with Kiddush, etc. שמור וזכור בדבור אחד" השמיענו א-ל המיחד "Observe" and "recall" in a single utterance, we were made to hear by the unified G-d.
When Hashem gave the command he said both words at the same time, that which is impossible for a human to do. This was necessary because Shabbat requires both aspects, cessation from work and also actions to make the day unique.
Another difference is the "reason" given for Shabbat. In the first tablets it says that Shabbat is to re-experience Creation while in the second it explains it to remember the exodus from Egypt. To understand this difference, we must realize who is being addressed at each point. Shemot was told to the Jews who were slaves in Egypt while Devarim is being told to the new generation that was born in the desert. To them Egypt is history, something from the last generation and they are therefore, being told to keep Shabbat and learn to appreciate freedom.
Try your own experiment. Read and compare the two versions and try to find and explain the other differences. A side benefit will be to understand how the Torah and mitzvot are relevant to each and every generation. We just have to learn how to explain and transmit it in the language of the times.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eliezer Langer

Support the Morse Elementary School Pantry
Can the Jewish Social Action Coalition provide food for approximately 30 Morse School families, at risk for hunger over weekends and holidays?
The Jewish Social Action Coalition - Morse School food pantry is dangerously low. Over 200 students will attend summer school this summer. While all these children qualify for free or reduced lunch, a number of them and their families are still in need of food. Please help assure that these children have the nutrition they need so that they can learn.
You can help - cash, a gift card, scrip or actual food items. Listed below are the food items most needed. Any kosher items may be donated through Schomre Israel.
More information - Sandy Corwin dcorwin@gmail.com 845-452-2436 or Debby Sullum dsullum@msn.com 462-1259
There is a carton set up for food donations in the hallway near the office.
Suggested List BREAKFAST: cold cereal, hot cereals, breakfast bars, complete pancake mix(add water
LUNCH: graham crackers, goldfish, cheeseits, granola bars, fruit snacks, pretzels, juice boxes, pasta, tomato sauces, egg noodles, dried rice, or canned beans,
We hope to continue to provide food to the food pantry throughout the school year, now concentrating on the summer needs.
