Based on earlier Parent Survey results, discussions with my faculty, requirements by the Archdiocese, and the need to delay the start of school until after Labor Day because of our summer construction of four new classrooms on the second floor, we have developed a 2017-18 school calendar that will pack in a year's worth of learning with enough holidays and vacations to make (most) everyone happy.
 
If you go to our school's website and click on the EVENTS section of the main page, you will bring up the monthly calendar. By either clicking on the right-arrow to scroll through the months, or clicking on the small-worded "Calendar View" on the far right-side of the page, you will be able to get to the July 2017 through June 2018 school calendars. Here you will see - and can print out - the various school events and vacations for the upcoming school year.
 
I need to tell you that our teachers reported to me that this current school year was their most perceivable one for having so many of their students miss school for family vacations. I trust you try your best to coincide family vacations during the school year with the actual days school will not be in session. But during these past seven months, it appears too many of you were tempted by great saving on airfares for off-peak travel times.  Unfortunately, what a family may save in travel costs they lose in their child's learning. When a child misses school for an ill-timed trip, this has two negative effects. First, even if he/she is given work to do while on vacation, the child still misses valuable in-class instruction and guided practice of the material covered in class while absent. Most likely, the child will return and realize he/she is behind the class in learning and will need to work extra hard for a number of days or weeks to catch up. And unfortunately, some kids never catch up.
 
A second negative effect of missing school for a family vacation is it sends a mixed message to the child: "If school is so important, why are my parents allowing me to 'skip' it?" A child's number one job while this age is to be a student. School should take priority over trips, sports, and other rewarding, yet not as obligatory, activities.
 
Of course, I realize there are extenuating circumstances - more vital than lower airfare costs - when missing school for a family trip is indeed necessary. An out-of-town funeral or a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel to Rome and see the Pope would be examples of two worthwhile ventures that even the strictest teacher would understand if a student needed to miss school. But for the most part, the teachers and I would GREATLY appreciate families planning vacations AROUND the school calendar, and making SCHOOL the #1 priority in your children's schedules.
 
This is why I try to finalize our next year's school calendar by no later than May each year, so that families can coincide their family vacations for the upcoming year with St. Louise's school vacations. Please take note not only of our specific days off in 2017-18, but of our days IN session, and plan accordingly. For example, a big one is that we are IN session for much of the week of the George Washington Birthday holiday (AKA "Presidents' Day") in February. St. Louise is NOT a school that takes off an entire week for a so-called "mid-winter break." I mean ... C'MON! We just got back from two weeks off for Christmas break the month prior, and for a school to think they need another week off?! I call those weak, out-of-shape schools! I say all a school needs is to take merely a couple of days off to commemorate the birthday of the Father of our country, and then get their kids right back to work! :-)

  • Christmas Vacation (no school) - Saturday, December 16 through Monday, January 1 (inclusive; school resumes on Tuesday, January 2)
  • Martin Luther King's Birthday (no school) - Monday, January 15
  • George Washington's Birthday (no school) -Monday, February 19, and Tuesday, February 20
  • Easter Vacation (no school) - Saturday, March 31 through Sunday, April 8
  • Grade 8 Graduation - Thursday, June 7
  • Last Day of School - Friday, June 15

We are going to have to sadly say goodbye to two more teachers at the end of the school year this June. Our reading teacher Patsy Regalia will be stepping down for family reasons. (Look for Mrs. Regalia's email to school parents later today explaining her difficult decision). Patsy has been teaching at St. Louise for 12 years - did you know her first year here was as a 2nd grade teacher? She's been connected to St. Louise even longer than that, as Patsy and her husband Bill enrolled their daughters here prior. (And if you really want to know how long Patsy has had a connection with me, ask her to tell you the story about her and my dad when Patsy was a kid and my dad was a State Trooper!) Many primary grade students were lucky enough over the past years to have the caring, personal instruction from Mrs. Regalia which helped them get up to speed in their reading skills and confidence. I know as her boss for all these years, I'll miss her nonstop energy, loving concern for her students, and the fact that she always laughed at my jokes (even the ones others groaned at).

Additionally, one of our first grade teachers, Janice Terrell will be leaving us after June. Janice joined us just this past fall, and everyone on the staff quickly enjoyed her friendly nature and camaraderie. She is desiring to teach closer to home in Seattle.

For both of these teachers and for Mr. Todd O'Connor, we'll be doing public farewells at our end-of-year liturgy on June 8. Our new junior high social studies teacher will be hired shortly, and the first grade and reading teacher job openings are now posted online.

          Volunteer at the annual St. Louise Book Fair next week. It's a fun and rewarding volunteer experience to help ring up book sales in the library - no experience is necessary.  Mrs. McIntosh needs parent helpers both
before and after school on various days May 8-11. Please contact her for available time slots to volunteer for an hour or more.
We Welcome Grandparents Next Friday
          Our annual Grandparents' Mass is next Friday, May 12, at 9:00AM. If K-8 students have grandparents who can visit them at school that day (or if not, other relatives/special friends may substitute), they should meet their grandkids outside their classrooms at 8:45 so they may walk to church with them and sit with them at Mass. There will be special recognition of the grandparents during the liturgy. Immediately following Mass, a reception follows over at the main building until 10:30, at which time the students need to get back to work and will have to say goodbye to their special visitors.
          Please note that parking is congested for this event, so please arrive early and realize you may need to park on the soccer field or find neighborhood parking.
Seussical Jr. Closes Tonight!
          We are so proud of the students who are in the cast and crew of our school musical, Seussical Jr., and performed last night at the Bellevue Performing Arts Theater! They will have closing night tonight to a sold-out theater! Bravo to these students who have been working on this production for at least two nights per week since November:

The Auction kick-off packet you received last month gave you the information you need to donate to/procure for the auction and to pay the  required project fee, and you can also find this information here online . In addition, auction director Sue Richards  can help you if you need some suggestions of what items to procure.

 


All 2017-18 school families will need to donate or procure the minimally required $200 donation to the 2017 Auction by the early date of May 31. Please don't procrastinate, as this minimal donation amount increases in June to $250.

In addition to the donation/procurement requirement, each returning school family needs to please pay a $20-per-family grade project fee by May 31. (This is a change from past years when we had a $15-per-CHILD fee.)

Please note that we are unable to accept art, clothing, shoes, software, used items, or most professional services - included but not limited to haircuts, photographers, chiropractic care, tutoring, or financial services. Items with a value of less than $25 are also not able to be accepted.

Time to Commit to your Volunteer Jobs for Next Year
          Next Thursday, we'll be opening up your access to the online link allowing you to sign-up for volunteer jobs for the 2017-18 school year. That's when we ask you returning school parents to note in which ways you'll be able to help out around school and with school events, committees, and fund raisers in the coming school year. This early sign-up helps the school and Parents' Club figure out if we'll have enough volunteer support to run our programs, and it helps you create your 40 hour (minimum) schedule for volunteering for next year.  Be looking for the volunteer jobs sign-up link on May 11, and you'll have until June 19, to note your jobs for the 2017-18 school year.
          If you have questions about the overall volunteer process, please contact the Parents' Club's Volunteer Coordinator, Marinell Zevenbergen. Remember, as we wind down this current 2016-17 year, by mid-June all parents must have logged in online a minimum 40 hours. Thanks for giving your time!

New Co-Chairs Are Found!
We are excited to announce that Megan Kirk and Shawn Roduin have agreed to be co-chairs for the Charger Cards program beginning in the 2017-18 school year! After four years of chairing Charger Cards, Kathy Hueffed and Darlene Kraft will be turning over the reins to Megan and Shawn. We are grateful to have such enthusiastic, capable parents stepping forward to continue this vital fund raiser for our school, and want to thank Megan and newly entering parent Shawn! And when you see Darlene and Kathy, please applaud them for their tireless efforts since 2013 in co-chairing Charger Cards! What terrific leaders they have been!

Go, Chargers!
          Congratulations to our grade 6-8 volleyball teams for their valiant efforts in the CYO playoffs. Our 8th grade boys made it the farthest - they went all the way to the finals before falling!  
          It's now Track and Field season, and the Charger Track team invites you to come cheer them to victory. The grade 4-8 St. Louise Track Team runs, jumps, and throws at the following meets this spring:
  • May 6th and May 13th track meets will be at Renton Stadium, which offers great stands with rain cover. Time TBA.
  • May 14th is the 8th grade Pentathlon. It's at West Seattle Stadium at 12:30pm.
  • May 20th and June 3rd will both be at Highline Stadium in Burien. Highline has great stands with rain cover and plenty of parking. Time TBA.

St. Louise Students "Expected" to Be Active Christians
          Student Learning Expectations - SLEs - are expectations that our students should know, understand, value, and be able to do by the time they graduate from St. Louise School. Each month, one or two different SLEs are focused on school-wide. Mr. Fitzpatrick announces to all the students the "SLE(s) of the Month" on a Monday intercom announcement at the beginning of each month. The students and their teachers then discuss the meaning of the SLE and come up with examples of how this expectation could be practiced, observed, and realized. They then work all month on improving their knowledge and understanding of this learning expectation, and some grade levels are even able to achieve it later that month or later in the year. Other grade levels will need more years of practice before they can confidently confirm they can satisfy this objective. At the end of the month, each class informs Mr. Fitz what their class did that demonstrated the SLE(s) was accomplished, or is being initially worked on and hopefully will be achieved in the future.
          Throughout the month of April, schoolwide we have focused on this Student Learning Expectations:  SLE #1.1 - " A St. Louise student is an active Christian who seeks to develop a personal relationship with God as demonstrated by living out Gospel values and participating in liturgies, sacraments, and daily prayer." A few of these classrooms' reports to Mr. Fitz are highlighted below.
          Mrs. Talevich's and Mrs. Cervantes' 5th graders demonstrate that they constantly seek to develop a personal relationship with God as they weekly have a meditation time in religion class. Furthermore, they participate in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament throughout the year, going over to the parish chapel at the parish center and spending silent time with the Lord.
          Pre-K had a special washing-of-the-feet activity in April which really helped the preschoolers connect to the events of Holy Week and Jesus' call for us to take care of one another, as he takes care of us.  It was explained to the preschoolers that in Jerusalem during Jesus' time, it was dry and dusty, and people wore sandals and walked through dusty streets.  Naturally, their feet got dirty.  Since none of our Pre-K kids walked to school in sandals along dusty streets that day, they got their feet "dirty" by having them painted brown with washable paint.  Then Mrs. Salmon washed their feet for them as she told the story of the very first Holy Thursday and Jesus' words to the first Apostles: "And now that I have washed your feet, you can also wash one another's feet" (John 13:14).  By participating in this activity on Wednesday of Holy Week, when the preschool class joined the school for the Holy Thursday liturgy, the kids already had background experience with the Gospel story and its meaning.
          The 3rd graders demonstrated an understanding of SLE #1.1 in a variety of ways. First, they spent the entire Lenten season completing their "Daily Lent" workbooks, which allowed them time to reflect on various Bible verses and answer thought provoking questions every day in religion class. Together with their kindergarten buddies, Mrs. Berlin's and Miss Etter's students also created a special Lenten cross that had various small squares with activities on it. Examples of the activities written on the squares included, "Write a letter to your grandparents today" or "Eat no sweets today." The kids then shaded in each square daily as they completed it, and proudly returned the finished products back to class on Holy Thursday. Both 3rd grade classes also read the wonderful Christ-connected novel, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, and spent a lot of time discussing and completing activities that related to the Christian symbolism found in the book. During Holy Week, the third graders' homework was to create a reverent rendition of and original prayer relating to a specific Station of the Cross. These can be seen outside the 3A and 3B classrooms in the hallway.
          Our 4th graders are active Christians who participate in daily prayer. At the beginning of every morning, they read from a daily devotional that contains a Bible verse and an explanation on how the verse is relatable for children.  Mrs. Danforth or Mrs. Scruggs will then ask a question on how the students can relate this verse to their lives.  At the end of the day, when gathering around their class prayer table to pray, the 4th graders who have signed up will read a Bible verses of their choosing to begin their afternoon prayer time.  A quick discussion is given to reinforce the verse.  As their hearts are now ready for prayer, the 4A and 4B students then pray and say spontaneous prayer intentions or read special intentions from their "Book of Prayers." The 4th graders' daily prayer is concluded with reciting a Bible verse that is posted in the room. 

Miss Casey's 2nd graders participated in the Holy Thursday Liturgy last month in front of the entire school, acting out the Last Supper in the role of the 12 Apostles, with Fr. Fabian in the role of Jesus.

         
          Finally, Mrs. Cole wanted to point out that in many St. Louise grade level science classes, students work with their teachers' guidance to understand the intricacies, marvels, and order of God's creation as expressed in the Laws of Physics, Chemistry and Astronomy.
          The expectation that a St. Louise Student will be an active Christian doesn't end in April, but our spotlight on this particular SLE will end for now. Instead, with the new month will be a new focus. Throughout the month of May, schoolwide we will highlight this Student Learning Expectation: SLE #2.2 - " A St. Louise student is a life-long learner who communicates effectively through writing, speaking, and listening."

Our event begins at 5:30 p.m. and includes a catered dinner of hamburgers, hot dogs, and all the fixins' in one of the Sounders Lofts!  Come early so you can eat and get your pictures taken before the game!  Game time begins at 7, as we will head to our seats after dinner.

Who Said Parenting Would Be Easy?
          Parents of preteens and teenagers are encouraged to read this article and look at the video links within - http://www.today.com/parents/13-reasons-why-psychiatrist-calls-netflix-pull-series-t110934 - to learn about the Netflix show "13 Reasons Why." This is a Netflix series that we have heard some of our grade 5-8 students may be watching. That's concerning, especially given a prominent adolescent psychiatrist is calling on Netflix to stop streaming the series, calling it, "A very high-risk television program."
          "This show should be pulled off the air immediately," says Dr. Harold S. Koplewicz, president of the Child Mind Institute. "Here we have a show that has very attractive people and a character who committed suicide and is glorified. The message that comes out again and again in the 13 episodes is that when you are a teenager and you feel hopeless, suicide is the solution. That's a terrible message for all teenagers, but particularly for those who are vulnerable. I would tell parents that they shouldn't permit their children to watch it. If they have seen some or all of it, then it's absolutely imperative that you sit down and have a conversation with your child and explain to them that suicide is not a solution. That if they are facing any bad event or bad feeling, you are there as a parent to help them. You most probably have to discuss the show with your children whether or not they're going to watch it because if you don't, someone else is telling them about it."
           Youth Eastside Services is a support group Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Herridge has come out each year to talk to the 8th graders about suicide awareness and prevention. Here is an article for parents regarding warning signs of suicide and links

           Please note with May being "Mental Health Awareness Month," our parish is holding some presentations that all are welcome to attend. These presentations aren't focusing on suicide, but on mental health in general. You don't have to be the parent of a preteen or teen. If mental health issues are affecting you or any member of your family or others close to you, you should consider attending.

 

 
Both 6th grade classes combined their talents to create in Mrs. Walker's art class this abstract piece of art entitled "Stand Your Ground." Together they focused on the use of symbolism in art and chose to trace their shoe prints in repetition, symbolizing their community and working together for a common goal. Each student also wrote a paragraph describing their thoughts on whether one should protest the injustice seen in the world today. A common theme of standing up for your beliefs was written by many, thus inspiring the title of the piece. These paragraphs were then cut apart and transformed into the words shown above -  Stand Your Ground - combining the students' views into one voice. The 6th graders also discussed the emotion and power that can emulate from color, and chose a palette of cool tones to represent peace and calm, strong characteristics agreed upon by the students that are needed when reacting to injustice.

All of this art work followed earlier social studies lessons in Mrs. Patterson's classes related to the Holocaust and prejudices against Jews. This art piece was entered in The Holocaust Center for Humanity's
Writing, Art, and Film Contest.  This contest had as its basic prompt a quote from Elie Wiesel: "There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest."

Up to one in five individuals may show symptoms of dyslexia, such as difficulty learning to speak, learning letters and their sounds, organizing written and spoken language, memorizing number facts, spelling, and learning a foreign language. Dr. Jason Yeatman of the University of Washington will present on what science can teach us about reading, brain development, and dyslexia.
