Dear Mercy Families,
For 65 years, Mercy High School, San Francisco has tried to continuously improve and keep up with the pace of change in her city, adjusting to new realities, and taking advantage of opportunities. I am proud to announce the newest example of this change designed to strengthen our school: joining the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS). To learn more about CAIS, visit
www.caisca.org
for their
Principles of Good Practice for Parents
.
This means that CAIS will lead our accreditation process moving forward, in collaboration with our current accrediting agencies, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (
WASC
) and the Western Catholic Education Association (
WCEA
). We will go through the same rigorous accreditation procedures as many of the top private schools in the Bay Area and California and gain access to an additional state-wide network of schools, extensive professional development opportunities, and a wider applicant pool.
Joining CAIS is just the latest development in the story of Mercy’s strengthening. Since July 2016 we have also joined the National Association of Independent Schools (
NAIS
), the National Business Officers Association (
NBOA
), the Association of Fundraising Professionals (
AFP
), the National Coalition of Girl Schools (
NCGS
), the California Teacher Development Collaborative (
CaTDC
), and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (
ASCD
). Additionally, with the formation of the Mercy Education System of the Americas (
MESA
) in July 2017, we are active in a network of 57 Mercy schools in six countries and the U.S. territory of Guam.
Additionally, MESA requires an annual Stewardship Report which assesses all aspects of school operations as well as our Catholic identity and Mercy charism. Our affiliation with these organizations helps us gather the resources and support we need to continue to elevate our school and empower our faculty and staff. As always, feel free to reach out to me directly at
headofschool@mercyhs.org
with any questions.
For the next Parent Connect, I will continue my reflections on Magdalena Yeşil’s book
Power Up: How Smart Women Win in the New Economy
. Stay tuned!

Dear Mercy Families,
I want to update you on a couple important events that are coming up as we enter the final weeks of the 2017-18 school year.
April 20 Activities & Special Schedule
The next planned National School Walkout is April 20, in recognition of the anniversary of the Columbine shooting. To mark this occasion and honor the Critical Concerns of the Sisters of Mercy, we will have a special schedule that both enables students to walkout and engages them in social advocacy-related activities.
In preparation for this day, a group of Mercy students will join students from around California in an event organized by
Bay Area Student Activists
on April 19 in Sacramento where they will meet with lawmakers to discuss their concerns and proposals for legislative actions.
Many thanks go out to Academic Council, whose members helped develop the format for the day. Monday, April 23 will remain a White Day - no other scheduled dates are changing. Below is a DRAFT of the schedule for the day.
- 8:30am - Homeroom
- 8:45am - School prayer service (+ discussion)
- 9:45am - Description of activities
- 10:00am - Various activities (rotating)
- 12:00pm - Homeroom & Dismissal
Early next week we will send home parent permission forms for students who wish to participate in the walkout. The form will help the school keep track of students and enable us to communicate unexpected student walkouts with families.
Finals Schedule
Even though we just returned from Easter Break, finals are a little more than a month away. In an effort to provide students with more time to study for finals, and to help combat some of the stress associated with that time of year Mercy is piloting a new format for finals.
Rather than the traditional finals schedule with two exams each day for three consecutive days, finals will be spread out so that students do not take finals on consecutive days. Below is the finals schedule for this Spring.
- Friday, May 25 - World Languages, Science
- Tuesday, May 29 - English, Math
- Thursday, May 31 - Social Studies, Religious Studies
Monday, May 28 is a holiday and Wednesday, May 30 will be a study day for students (and grading day for teachers). Mercy will not be open to students on Wednesday, May 30. It is our hope that this schedule will enhance student’s ability to study, destress, and take proper care of themselves between exam dates.
In Mercy,
Dan Meyers
