Devotion
Life of Praise
"Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise - the fruit of lips that openly profess His name." Hebrews 13:15 (NIV)

Confession: I'm not good about reading the books my mom gives me as Christmas gifts. Oh, don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't appreciate them or want to read them. It's more that I tend to hesitate, holding back, subconsciously knowing - knowing that they're going to teach me something. The most recent was no exception, sitting on my shelf for at least a year before I finally cracked the cover, only to find that, as expected, it carried a powerful message. The book? "31 Days of Praise," by Ruth Myers. A heartfelt directive and guide for living our lives full of praise to our Heavenly Father.

Confession: I'm not too good at praising either. Oh, don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't appreciate corporate worship opportunities or want to live a life of praise. It's more that I tend to hesitate, holding back, subconsciously knowing - knowing that God is wanting to teach me something. Knowing that God is wanting to stretch me or grow me. If I'm honest, my life of praise is most often filled with ifs, ands and buts. Do you know what I mean? "I'll praise you God, if (fill in the blank with current desire or need)." "God, I praise you for... oh and while you're at it could you take care of ... for me too?" "God, I know I should praise you BUT I just can't right now, this situation that you've allowed is just too much for me..."

What I'm learning though is that a life of praise doesn't exclude any of these. Consider the Psalms - a beautiful mix of the authors' acknowledgement and complete adoration for who God is and for his power and also their painful aching and heartfelt cries. A narrative of pure honesty and openness to God.

May God teach us to do the same.

Father, empower us by your Holy Spirit no longer to be 'slaves to [our] emotions, ...untie the knots within [us] and settle [our] feelings, ...[Spring] up to fill [us] with fresh life, ...and [inspire] and [enable us] to worship, praise, and give thanks' (Myers). Stretch us and grow us so that our focus remains on you, despite the situations we face. Continue to uphold us with your mighty hand. In the name of our God and Father who is worthy of all honor, glory, and praise, Amen.

STUDENT APPLYING TO COLLEGE?
Unsure of where to start or how to help? CollegeBoard has produced a webinar to walk parents through the college application process. Registration is required, but the webinar is free. If you are unable to watch live, you will also be sent a link to view the recording after the event has concluded. Click the following link to register: College Applications 101 for Parents.

FAFSA WORKSHOP
Delta College is hosting a FAFSA workshop from 5-7pm Thursday, Nov. 10. This is a free event for the community. You do not need to be a Delta student or apply to Delta to attend. Financial Aid professionals will be available to help answer any questions or clarify parts of the FAFSA. See the VL Scholarship Page for more information! Want to start early? Create an FSA ID so that you can begin the application as soon as it is released!

RECOMMENDATION LETTERS
Many colleges, universities, and scholarships require students to obtain confidential letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors and other adults. These should only be sent to a school upon request (if the application states that you need them). Remember to give your recommender plenty of time to compose a quality letter of recommendation. It is often helpful to fill out a " Brag Sheet" to give your recommender a bigger picture of your accomplishments. See Mrs. Mueller with any questions.

TRANSCRIPTS
Did you know you can request transcripts to be sent online? VLHS participates with a program called  Parchment -  students can create an account and send their documents electronically and securely directly from the school. Or, you can submit a request through the  VLHS Website . Transcript requests generally take a few business days to process. If you need a document sent immediately, please contact Mrs. Mueller directly.
